You can stream Amazon Bedrock model output through AWS Lambda when the model supports streaming and the Lambda invocation route is configured to stream. Lambda allows a response of up to 200 MB, but only the first 6 MB is sent without a bandwidth cap; the remainder is limited to 2 MB per second. Your bill depends on Bedrock inference usage, Lambda execution and any additional services in the request path—not on a universal per-stream total.
How streaming works across Bedrock and Lambda
Streaming requires both services to deliver partial results. Bedrock’s InvokeModelWithResponseStream returns model output in Amazon EventStream chunks. Lambda must then use a response-streaming invocation path to pass partial data to the client instead of buffering the complete response.

Not every foundation model supports Bedrock response streaming. Check the model’s responseStreamingSupported field through GetFoundationModel, and grant the calling identity bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. AWS CLI does not support Bedrock streaming operations, so use a suitable SDK or direct API client. See AWS’s Invoke API guide.
Lambda response limits and transfer speed
| Lambda response mode | Maximum response payload | Transfer behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Buffered | 6 MB | The function returns the response as a whole rather than delivering partial results. |
| Response streaming | 200 MB | The first 6 MB has uncapped bandwidth; subsequent response data is capped at 2 MB/s. |
These are Lambda response-payload limits, not limits on network calls made by the function. Actual initial delivery speed depends on how quickly the function produces data, and delivery to a client outside AWS also depends on that client’s connection. The figures are from AWS Lambda response-streaming documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Choose a supported invocation route
Lambda Function URL
Function URLs default to buffered responses. Change the URL’s invoke mode to RESPONSE_STREAM to send partial response data. AWS documents the setup in Invoking a response-streaming function using Lambda function URLs.
Lambda API or API Gateway
You can also invoke a streaming-enabled function with Lambda’s InvokeWithResponseStream API, or use API Gateway proxy integration. Account for the API Gateway route and its potential charges if you choose that architecture.

Runtime, Region, and VPC constraints
- Lambda response streaming is not available in every AWS Region; verify availability for the Region you plan to use.
- Managed Node.js runtimes support response streaming. Python and other runtimes need a custom runtime with Runtime API integration or the Lambda Web Adapter.
- Function URLs do not support response streaming for functions in a VPC. AWS documents invoking through the SDK with
InvokeWithResponseStreamand a Lambda interface VPC endpoint as the supported alternative.
See AWS’s response-streaming documentation for current compatibility details.
Bedrock quotas still apply
Bedrock runtime quotas are model-specific, apply across streaming and non-streaming inference APIs, and are shared across those calls. A streaming request therefore does not provide a separate quota pool. Check the live values for your account, model, and Region in Bedrock runtime quotas; a generic quota figure may not describe your account.

What you pay for
There is no reliable single total for streaming Bedrock through Lambda without workload assumptions. Estimate the relevant components for your model, Region, configuration, and traffic path:
- Bedrock inference: The model’s current pricing and billable usage dimensions, principally input and generated output tokens for the selected model and mode. Check Amazon Bedrock pricing.
- Lambda: Request charges and configured memory multiplied by execution duration at the applicable Region rates. Streaming responses incur cost. Lambda continues running, and AWS bills for the full function duration, even if the invoking client disconnects. Check AWS Lambda pricing for current response-streaming terms and free allowances.
- Other architecture costs: API Gateway or network and data-transfer charges may apply depending on the route, Region, and traffic path. Include them where relevant; there is no universal add-on amount.
Streaming changes how output reaches the client, not the underlying model usage. It can reduce the time a user waits for the first partial result and avoid buffering a large response in Lambda memory, but it does not eliminate inference charges or Lambda execution-time charges.

Estimate the cost for your workload
For a useful estimate, forecast or measure request volume, input and output tokens, model, Region, Lambda memory, average and tail execution duration, response size, and client disconnect rate. Apply the current service prices to those assumptions, then include any API Gateway or network charges for the route you actually use. Recheck prices and quotas before deployment because both can vary by model, Region, account, and time.
When streaming is worth using
Streaming is most useful when clients benefit from seeing partial model output, or when the complete response may exceed Lambda’s 6 MB buffered-response limit. It is less compelling when responses are small and clients need only the completed result: buffering may be simpler, provided the whole response stays within that limit.
Best Value
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
Before choosing, compare time to first byte and total completion time, expected response size and the post-6-MB rate limit, model and runtime compatibility, Region and VPC constraints, shared Bedrock quotas, disconnect behavior, and the combined service cost. A client disconnect is not a cancellation signal for Lambda; design timeouts and cancellation handling with that in mind.
