Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst identify whether the failure came from a Bedrock stream event, model processing, or the network path. Those cases need different fixes: a model timeout is not repaired by TCP keep-alive, while an idle connection dropped by an intermediary is not proof that Bedrock timed out. Preserve the specific exception or event, check whether any chunks reached the caller, and only then decide whether to retry.
Confirm the streaming API and model
Amazon Bedrock offers two streaming operations. InvokeModelWithResponseStream returns model-specific inference output as a response stream. ConverseStream provides the message-based Converse interface for models that support messages. Check the selected model’s responseStreamingSupported field through GetFoundationModel before diagnosing a call as a runtime failure. The AWS CLI does not support these streaming operations.

Log the operation, AWS Region, model or inference-profile identifier, elapsed time, whether any event or chunk arrived, final event type, exception name, original or HTTP status and message when present, and relevant client and intermediary deadlines. Avoid recording prompts or generated text unless your privacy policy permits it. Keep the original error details rather than translating every failure into “timeout.”

Bedrock stream events are typed. For InvokeModelWithResponseStream, documented outcomes include a model stream error (424), a model timeout (408), an internal server error (500), service unavailable (503), and throttling (429). These are distinct from a client-side deadline or a TCP reset. Validation and permission failures also should not be treated as transient network faults.
| Observed failure | What it indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
ModelTimeoutException (408) |
Model processing exceeded the model timeout length. | Review workload, model behavior, and elapsed time. TCP keep-alive does not fix model processing timeouts. |
ModelStreamErrorException (424) |
An error occurred in the stream; the API exposes original status and message fields. | Preserve those fields and apply a bounded application retry policy, accounting for any chunks already delivered. |
| Internal error (500) or service unavailable (503) | Service-side transient error categories in the API reference. | Use bounded retries and record non-sensitive request context. |
| Throttling (429) | Capacity or quota pressure, not an idle network reset. | Review service quotas and request rate or capacity strategy. |
| Connection reset or timeout after an idle period | May be a transport-path issue; it is not by itself evidence of a Bedrock model timeout. | Check whether the path includes a component with the documented 350-second idle timeout. |
| No chunks before a client deadline or cancellation | The client or an intermediary may have stopped waiting before the response arrived. | Compare end-to-end deadlines with model processing time; AWS does not establish a universal SDK timeout value. |

Check for an idle network connection
A long pause between calls or during a stream can expose idle-connection behavior on the network path. AWS documents a fixed 350-second idle connection timeout for NAT Gateways, interface VPC endpoints, and Network Load Balancers. These components can drop an idle connection without notifying the client; the failure may appear later as a reset, timeout, or slow connection reuse. This figure applies to the named components, not every proxy or network device.
Determine whether the affected request crosses one of these components and whether the connection could have remained idle. Treat the match as a network-path lead, not a diagnosis that Bedrock itself timed out.

For applicable Linux paths, configure both keep-alive settings
For the Linux network case AWS describes, SDK-level and operating-system TCP keep-alive settings must work together. AWS gives boto3.Config(tcp_keepalive=True) as the SDK setting. The cited Linux default for net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time is 7200 seconds, which is longer than the documented 350-second idle timeout. Set the OS interval below 350 seconds as appropriate for the deployment; AWS gives 45 seconds as an example, not a universal prescription.
- Enable SDK TCP keep-alive. In boto3, configure the Bedrock Runtime client with
Config(tcp_keepalive=True). Check the corresponding option for your SDK and version if you use another language. - Set the Linux TCP keep-alive interval. Configure
net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_timeto a value below 350 seconds, confirming the appropriate deployment-specific sysctl process and persistence. - Verify both settings on the deployed path. SDK-only configuration is insufficient if the OS interval remains at the cited two-hour default. Confirm effective runtime and host settings rather than relying only on configuration files.
AWS describes the principle this way: “Enabling TCP keep-alive on the Amazon Bedrock client requires two settings working together.” The documented 7200-second default and 45-second example are from AWS troubleshooting guidance; the page does not state a publication year for these figures.

Compare deadlines across the full request path
Review SDK connect, read, and attempt timeouts alongside the application request deadline and limits imposed by any proxy, load balancer, ingress, or caller. A client that gives up before the model responds can look like a service failure even when the stream has not emitted an error event. AWS’s consulted API pages do not specify universal SDK timeout numbers; choose values for the SDK version, workload, and application deadline, then verify them in the target environment.

Make partial output and retry behavior explicit
Streaming changes the consequences of a retry: text may already have reached the caller when a connection fails. A new invocation can repeat work or generate text that duplicates the partial answer. Decide how the application will handle delivered output and avoid silently appending a fresh answer to it.

- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
- Choose whether to preserve, label, or discard partial output after a failure.
- Retry only under an application-defined policy, with limits and backoff suited to the error category.
- Account for already delivered chunks before replaying a request; the API references do not guarantee that replay is safe for every application.
Account for Guardrails buffering and exposure
Guardrails can affect when chunks appear. Synchronous scanning buffers one or more chunks before delivery, which can increase perceived stream latency. Asynchronous processing sends chunks sooner, but inappropriate material may reach the caller before detection; asynchronous processing also does not support sensitive-information masking. Choose the mode in light of both latency and content-handling requirements, rather than treating delayed chunks alone as a transport timeout.

Keep transport, model, and application decisions separate
A typed 408 or 424 event calls for interpreting the Bedrock response; a reset after an idle interval calls for investigating the connection path; a client deadline calls for checking the end-to-end timeout budget. Once chunks have reached the caller, recovery is also an application decision about partial output and duplicate work. Classifying these separately makes the next diagnostic more targeted and prevents retries from hiding the original failure.
