A Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card is a physical card that lets the console download a game; it does not hold the full game data. You need an internet connection and enough storage for the initial download. Once the game has been downloaded and launched for the first time, Nintendo says you can start it offline—but the card must still be inserted to play.
What is a game-key card?
It is a physical Nintendo Switch 2 game card that stores a key to activate the software, rather than the complete game. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described it as a card that “stores a key to activate the software” in Nintendo’s June 2025 shareholder Q&A.

The key card is therefore different from a standard game card, which contains the game data on the card. With a game-key card, the console downloads that data to its storage. Nintendo Switch 2 supports both formats, so a physical release is not necessarily a game-key card. Nintendo says the key-card packaging has a key icon on the front; check the specific edition’s packaging or regional game listing before buying.
How do game-key cards work?
- Insert the card. Put the game-key card into the Nintendo Switch 2 card slot.
- Download the game data. Follow the prompts on the HOME Menu. The initial download needs an internet connection and enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the required space is shown on the card packaging and digital game listing.
- Launch the game. Keep the card inserted. Nintendo says an internet connection is required the first time you launch the game.
- Play again later. After the first launch, Nintendo says you can start the game without an internet connection, as long as the card is inserted.
Nintendo’s support guide says a Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data. If you want to use the card on a different console, Nintendo’s regional guide says to repeat the setup steps there, including downloading the game data on that console. On the same console, you can start the downloaded game without another internet connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do game-key cards include the game?
They include the physical card and the key, but not the full game data. The download supplies that data to the console or microSD Express card. This means you need enough local storage for the particular game even though you bought a physical release; check its packaging or listing for the required space.
Do I need internet to play?
You need internet for the initial download and, according to Nintendo, for the game’s first launch. Nintendo says the game can be started offline after that first launch. This covers starting the downloaded game; online multiplayer or other online services may still require a connection. Nintendo’s statement does not guarantee that a game’s data will remain available for redownload indefinitely, so do not treat offline play as a promise of future download availability.

Does the card need to stay inserted?
Yes. The card is required to start and play the downloaded game. The game data is stored on the console or microSD Express card, but the game-key card continues to serve as the physical key.

Nintendo’s stated reason is to help accommodate larger game data sizes on Switch 2 than on the original Switch. In its June 2025 shareholder Q&A, Furukawa called game-key cards “one of the new software distribution methods” introduced for that purpose. He also said Nintendo would continue working with publishers and that software could be released in different formats. That explains Nintendo’s rationale for the format; it does not establish why any particular publisher chose it.
