What Are Multimodal AI Agents and How Do They Work?

Multimodal AI agents combine different kinds of input with planning, tools and feedback to pursue goals. Here’s how their architectures work and what to watch for.

A multimodal AI agent is a goal-directed application that can work with more than one kind of information—such as text, images, audio or video—and use tools and feedback to pursue a task. “Multimodal” describes the information it handles; “agent” describes how it can plan, act, inspect what happened and decide what to do next.

What makes an AI system an agent?

A model that answers a single prompt is not necessarily an agent. An agent uses a model and tools to work toward a goal, often in a cycle of gathering context, reasoning, taking an action, checking the result and repeating if needed. Microsoft defines an agent as “an AI system that uses a language model and tools to complete a goal on your behalf.” Microsoft’s agent documentation describes that recurring cycle; Google Cloud’s overview also highlights input processing, reasoning, tools, actions and, in some systems, memory.

  1. Perceive: Receive text, an image, audio, video or a live stream. The system may process an input directly or use separate components such as speech transcription or video analysis.
  2. Interpret and plan: Work out what the user wants and choose a next step. A single model may handle the task, or a coordinator may assign parts to specialist agents.
  3. Act: Respond, retrieve information, call an API or function, or interact with a software interface.
  4. Observe: Inspect the tool’s output or fresh sensory input to determine what changed and whether the action worked.
  5. Continue or finish: Take another step if needed, return a result, or ask a person for input.

The application—not just the model—determines how these steps fit together. It supplies tools, context, memory, runtime behavior and permissions.

How multimodal input and action work together

Multimodality does not require one universal model to interpret every kind of signal equally well. A system can use a model built to handle several modalities, specialized components for tasks such as transcription or visual analysis, or a combination of both. The application has to pass useful context between those components and connect decisions to real tool results.

One example is Google Cloud’s live bidirectional multimodal streaming architecture. A client sends audio and video over a persistent WebSocket. A dispatcher routes events to a live model, which can answer directly or request a function call or specialist-agent context. Retrieved product information can then support spoken guidance sent back over the stream. The architecture also describes analyzing video segments for possible hazards; that design example is not a guarantee of error-free monitoring.

A different pattern is computer use. OpenAI’s description of its Computer-Using Agent says it reads screen pixels and operates virtual mouse and keyboard controls. It can move through multi-step tasks and respond to changes in what appears on screen, rather than relying on a dedicated API for every website or application. OpenAI’s CUA description reports results for that specific system: 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena and 87% on WebVoyager, in a post published January 23, 2025. Those are benchmark results for the named system at that time, not a general measure of multimodal-agent performance.

Common architecture patterns

There is no single required design. The right choice depends on the task’s complexity, latency and streaming needs, reliability requirements, cost, security and how much control developers need over intermediate data.

Pattern How it works Useful trade-off
One agent with tools One model interprets the request, plans and selects tools. A straightforward starting point, but the model’s choices and tool reliability shape the whole workflow.
Chained pipeline Separate stages handle tasks such as transcription, reasoning, tool execution and speech generation. Developers can control intermediate representations and components, at the cost of coordinating more stages.
Live model with delegated backend A responsive voice or multimodal session handles interaction while a separate backend runs business logic and tools. Can separate real-time interaction from application-controlled operations.
Specialist agents A coordinator delegates analyses to specialized agents, sometimes in parallel, and combines their results. Supports division of complex work, but requires orchestration and a way to reconcile outputs.
Computer-use agent The agent interprets screenshots and acts through virtual mouse and keyboard input. Can work through graphical interfaces without a custom API for each one, but depends on interpreting screens and verifying actions.

Google Cloud’s architecture guidance groups choices across the frontend, framework, tools, memory, design patterns, runtime, model and model runtime, noting that they affect performance, scalability, cost and security. Its multimodal classification example uses a coordinator, shared session state, specialist agents and MCP servers to analyze different media in parallel.

What multimodal agents can do

  • Visual troubleshooting: A user can show a device on camera and ask about an indicator. The live-streaming architecture gives the example dialogue, “Help, what does this flashing red error light mean?” The system can retrieve product information and return spoken guidance.
  • Hands-free field guidance: A technician can stream audio and video while the application retrieves instructions or schematics and monitors for possible hazards.
  • Mixed-media classification: A coordinator can send different data types to specialist agents and combine their analyses into a classification.
  • Computer interaction: An agent can read a screenshot, click or type, inspect the changed screen and adapt its next action.

These examples describe possible system designs and capabilities, not a promise that every agent will perform reliably in real-world conditions.

Where multimodal agents fail—and how to manage risk

Errors can enter at several points: a system may misread a scene or utterance, reason incorrectly, retrieve unsuitable information, choose the wrong tool or fail to notice that an action did not work. Tool use also creates risks beyond ordinary text generation, including prompt injection in content the agent views, excessive permissions, unintended transactions and exposure of audio, video or business records.

For systems carrying sensitive streams, Google Cloud’s reference architecture recommends TLS encryption for bidirectional WebSocket connections and authenticated agent-to-agent communication using identity tokens. The Operator System Card describes external red teaming, risk evaluation and mitigations for a system that acts on the internet. AWS’s Agentic AI Lens addresses production concerns such as monitoring, human-in-the-loop governance, identity, observability, evaluation and policy controls.

  • Give tools only the permissions required for the task.
  • Require confirmation before consequential or irreversible actions.
  • Use authenticated, encrypted connections for sensitive communication.
  • Ground answers in retrievable sources where accuracy depends on external facts.
  • Keep audit logs and evaluate the system on representative tasks.
  • Provide a clear path to human review when the system is uncertain or the stakes are high.

These are design safeguards, not features that should be assumed to exist in every agent. Evaluate a system for its specific task and operating conditions; one benchmark score cannot establish how multimodal agents perform as a category.

How to think about an agent’s capabilities

Separate the input types from the action loop when assessing a system. A tool that accepts images and audio is multimodal, but it is not necessarily an agent; a system that plans, calls tools and checks results may be agentic even if its inputs are limited. In either case, the application’s tools, permissions, memory, runtime and oversight determine what it can safely do.
