Liquid crystals are materials that flow like liquids while retaining some of the organized molecular orientation found in crystals. Ordinary crystalline solids have strong positional order as well as orientation; ordinary isotropic liquids flow without a shared macroscopic direction. Liquid crystals occupy the middle ground—not as a simple half-solid, half-liquid mixture, but as an ordered fluid whose properties can depend on direction.
How can something be both liquid and crystalline?
“Liquid crystal” describes a phase of matter, not a rigid crystal that has melted only partway. Molecules in the phase can move past one another, so the material flows. At the same time, their orientations remain correlated: many molecules tend to point along a common direction, or follow another organized pattern.

In plain terms, molecular positions become less fixed than in a crystal, while some directional organization survives. This retained alignment can make a liquid crystal respond differently depending on the direction in which light or another influence passes through it.

How do liquid crystals differ from crystals and ordinary liquids?

What are the main types of liquid-crystal phases?
Nematic
In a nematic phase, molecules tend to align along a common average direction, called the director. Their centers do not have corresponding long-range positional order, so the molecules can still move around rather than occupying fixed sites.

Smectic
Smectic phases retain orientational order and also arrange molecules into layers. Those layers add positional organization compared with the nematic phase, while the material still has liquid-like behavior.

Cholesteric, or chiral nematic
In a cholesteric phase, the preferred molecular orientation gradually rotates from place to place, forming a helix through the material. “Chiral nematic” is another name for this phase family.

What makes a liquid-crystal phase appear?
Some liquid-crystal phases depend mainly on temperature; these are called thermotropic. Others depend on the concentration of material in a solvent; these are lyotropic. A particular substance or mixture can have its own phase ranges, so there is no single transition temperature that applies to all liquid crystals.

Why are liquid crystals used in displays?
Molecular alignment affects how light propagates through a liquid crystal. LCDs use that optical response: controlling the material’s alignment changes how light passes through the display. Can liquid crystals respond to temperature?
Some liquid-crystal materials produce temperature-responsive optical effects. The University College London educational resource identifies thermochromic thermometer devices as an application. That is a property of some materials, not a behavior to assume for every liquid crystal.
