How to Choose Affordable Headphones That Sound as Good as AirPods Max

If you want AirPods Max–like sound for less, start by deciding what “as good” means to you: a similar tonal balance, strong noise cancellation, long battery life, or a comfortable fit. No less expensive headphone is proven to sound identical for every listener. Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is a strong sound-focused candidate; Sony WH-1000XM5 is a feature-rich all-rounder; and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) is worth shortlisting when noise cancellation matters most. Treat each as an audition, not a guaranteed match.

What are you trying to match about AirPods Max?

“Sound as good” is personal, not a single measurable threshold. A headphone can measure close to a target response and still sound different to you because of your preferred bass and treble balance, music, listening level, ear shape, fit, and seal. Decide which parts of the AirPods Max experience matter before choosing a substitute.

  • Tonal balance: Do you want similar bass and treble, or do you prefer a warmer, brighter, or more neutral presentation? Look for adjustable EQ if you want to tune the result.
  • Noise cancellation: Consider the noises you encounter. Low-frequency engine rumble and higher-pitched voices or announcements are not necessarily blocked equally well.
  • Comfort and fit: Headband pressure, ear-cup depth, heat, and seal affect comfort as well as perceived bass and isolation.
  • Daily-use features: Compare battery life with ANC enabled, device compatibility, call quality, app controls, and whether you need wired listening or an easy-to-carry design.

Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 386.2 g, with up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled, Adaptive EQ, Transparency mode, Personalized Spatial Audio, and USB-C lossless audio. Those are specifications for Apple’s model, not requirements an alternative must copy. Apple’s AirPods Max 2 specifications

Which less expensive headphones are worth auditioning?

Model Best reason to consider it What the evidence does—and does not—show
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless Sound-focused shortlist SoundGuys reports broadly similar measured sound profiles to AirPods Max USB-C against its target curve, but notes differences in bass and high frequencies and that fit affects results. It is not a claim of identical sound or universal preference. Its ANC is good, though AirPods Max performed particularly well at low frequencies in that comparison.
Sony WH-1000XM5 Feature-rich, cross-platform option Sony specifies up to 30 hours of playback with noise cancellation on and 40 hours with it off, and support for SBC, AAC, and LDAC. These are manufacturer ratings and codec specifications, not a shared lab comparison or proof of better sound.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) ANC-led option What Hi-Fi? positions this generation as its strongest ANC alternative and lists 30 hours of battery life, USB-C charging, and SBC, AAC, and aptX Adaptive support. The ANC ranking is that publication’s editorial verdict.
Soundcore Space Q45 Lower-price model to investigate SoundGuys names it as a less expensive alternative and says its ANC is similar to Sony WH-1000XM3. The available comparison does not establish a current price or a direct sound-quality match with AirPods Max.

How to compare sound and noise cancellation fairly

Use familiar music and your own preferred sound

Listen to tracks you know well, at a comfortable and consistent volume. Compare each headphone at its default tuning first, then try its EQ controls if available. A measured frequency-response comparison can help identify tonal differences, but it cannot tell you which sound you will prefer.

In SoundGuys’ comparison, MOMENTUM 4 Wireless and AirPods Max USB-C have broadly similar profiles against the publication’s target curve, with differences in bass and high frequencies. SoundGuys also cautions that fit affects results. Treat that as evidence that the Sennheiser deserves a listen—not as a guarantee that it will sound the same on your ears.

Judge ANC by the noises you need to reduce

Try headphones in conditions like your actual commute or workspace if possible. ANC performance varies with noise frequency, and passive isolation from a good seal matters too. SoundGuys found AirPods Max particularly impressive against low-frequency noise; in its comparison, MOMENTUM 4 blocked more noise than Apple above 1.6 kHz. That result does not establish that one model will be better in every environment.

If ANC is your main reason for buying, include Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) and Sony WH-1000XM5 in your shortlist. The Bose recommendation here reflects What Hi-Fi?’s editorial assessment, while Sony’s quoted battery figures are its own specifications. Neither fact is a direct, same-test comparison of ANC performance.

Check battery, codecs, and device compatibility

Battery claims are not directly comparable unless they come from the same test conditions. Sony rates WH-1000XM5 for up to 30 hours with noise cancellation on and 40 hours with it off. What Hi-Fi? lists 30 hours for Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Apple lists up to 20 hours for AirPods Max 2 with ANC enabled. These figures come from different sources and setups; actual playback time can vary.

Codec support may matter if you switch between Apple and Android devices. Sony lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC for WH-1000XM5; What Hi-Fi? lists SBC, AAC, and aptX Adaptive for the Bose model. Check the exact device and operating-system support you need, along with app EQ and control features. Do not assume an alternative reproduces every Apple-specific feature of AirPods Max.

Make the final choice with a fit check and price check

  1. Shortlist by priority: Start with MOMENTUM 4 Wireless for a sound-focused audition, Sony WH-1000XM5 for its broad feature and battery package, or Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if ANC leads your decision.
  2. Wear before you commit: Check for pressure, heat, and a secure seal. If you cannot try them in person, read the return terms and buy only where you can return a poor fit.
  3. Compare the whole use case: Check ANC with your typical noise, battery with ANC on, codec and app compatibility, call needs, wired-use options, and carrying convenience.
  4. Check the live local price: Prices and availability change by retailer and region. Compare current offers and return policies rather than relying on an old price or an assumed discount.

SoundGuys also names Space Q45 as a lower-price possibility, but the evidence here does not establish a current price or an AirPods Max sound match. Consider it only if you can assess its sound and fit for yourself.
