Traditional ccTLDs use two-letter codes drawn from ISO 3166-1, but ISO country codes also serve many non-Internet purposes—and a code or domain suffix does not by itself establish that a place is a sovereign state.
What are Internet country codes?
In domain names, the term usually refers to country-code top-level domains, abbreviated ccTLDs. A top-level domain is the final label in a domain name: in example.fr, that label is .fr. ICANN describes ccTLDs as the top-level-domain category reserved for countries, territories, and geographic locations identified in the ISO 3166-1 Country Codes list.

The traditional ASCII form is two letters, as in .jp, .fr, and .ke. Some country-code domains can also appear in scripts other than US-ASCII; these are internationalized domain names. ICANN’s ccTLD overview explains the category and its relationship to ISO 3166-1.

Yes, in the conventional case: the two-letter ccTLD suffix is based on an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code. But ISO codes and ccTLDs are not interchangeable terms. ISO 3166 is a system for representing country names and subdivisions in multiple contexts; a ccTLD is a kind of top-level domain in the DNS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ISO codes are also used in areas such as postal services, passports, logistics, telecommunications, travel, and finance. Seeing a two-letter country code in one of those settings does not mean it is a domain suffix.
What does ISO 3166 cover?
ISO 3166 has three parts: Part 1 covers current country names and other listed areas; Part 2 covers subdivisions; and Part 3 covers non-current country names. Its code formats include alpha-2 (two letters), alpha-3 (three letters), and numeric-3 (three digits). The conventional basis for ccTLDs is the alpha-2 format, not the other formats.

| ISO 3166 code type | Form | Relevance to domain names |

| Alpha-3 | Three letters | Not the conventional ccTLD form |
| Numeric-3 | Three digits | Not the conventional ccTLD form |

| Former-name code | Code for a non-current country name | Not the conventional ccTLD form |
ISO 3166’s scope is broader than sovereign states. ISO says Part 1 includes dependencies and other areas of particular geopolitical interest, and some legacy entries remain listed even though they do not meet the standard’s current definition of a country. Consequently, neither an ISO code nor an associated domain suffix is proof of sovereignty or international recognition. See ISO’s overview of ISO 3166 country codes.
Does every eligible code have a delegated domain?
No. Eligibility for a country-code top-level domain is distinct from the domain being delegated in the DNS or a registry being operated. IANA says the primary eligibility method is listing as a two-letter ASCII ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code; eligibility can also arise through the IDN Fast Track process for internationalized domain names.

IANA’s documented delegation or transfer process reviews the proposed manager’s technical and administrative competence, includes government review, and considers whether the proposal serves the local Internet community. ISO maintains the country-code list; IANA handles domain delegation and transfer processes. The two roles are related, but they are not the same. Details are available in IANA’s ccTLD delegation and transfer guidance.
What does a suffix such as .uk or .jp mean?
A suffix such as .jp identifies a ccTLD associated with a country, territory, or geographic location; it is not a complete statement about the person or organization using the domain. In particular, the suffix alone does not prove the registrant is physically located there, that the site is government-run, or that the associated place has a particular political status.

Registration conditions are set locally and can differ from one ccTLD to another. Check the relevant registry’s current policy if you need to know who can register a name, what documentation may be required, or whether restrictions apply. A general definition cannot establish those details for every domain.

For current ISO codes, use the ISO Online Browsing Platform, which ISO identifies as the source for current information and changes: ISO Online Browsing Platform. For whether a ccTLD is delegated and for delegation information, consult IANA’s relevant records and guidance. For registration eligibility and rules, consult the local ccTLD registry. These sources answer different questions: code listing, DNS delegation, and local registration policy should not be treated as one status.
