They keep selected Story content available there beyond its ordinary 24-hour display window. Unlike the private Stories Archive, a Highlight is a collection you choose to show on your profile; it remains until you remove it.
What Story Highlights look like
Highlights appear as tappable circles on an Instagram profile. Each one groups selected Stories, often around a topic or a visitor’s needs. For example, a creator might make collections for an introduction, travel, or tutorials. A business might group practical information such as opening details, products, events, or answers to common questions. These are organizational ideas, not guarantees of performance.

| Feature | Main purpose | Where content appears | Duration or access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Share timely content | Instagram’s Story surface | Ordinarily displayed for 24 hours, according to Instagram’s original announcement. |
| Stories Archive | Keep expired Stories for your own account | Private archive | Instagram’s announcement says it is visible only to the account owner. Automatic saving can be turned off. |
| Highlight | Curate selected Stories for profile visitors | A collection on your profile | Stays on the profile until you remove it; visibility depends on Story and account settings. |
An archived Story does not automatically appear in a Highlight. You choose which Stories to add. Instagram described expired Stories as automatically saved to a private archive when that setting is enabled; you can disable auto-archiving in profile settings.

How to create or edit a Highlight
The controls and labels can vary by device, app version, and account, so treat these as general steps rather than a fixed menu path.
- From a current Story: Open the Story and use its Highlight control to add it to an existing collection or create a new one.
- From an older Story: Find the Story in your Stories Archive, select it, and add it to a Highlight. This works only if it was saved to the archive and is still available to your account.
- Set up the collection: Choose a name and cover. The cover can come from a Story; current third-party guides also describe choosing a custom image.
- Edit or remove it: Instagram’s 2017 announcement describes pressing and holding a Highlight to edit or remove it. Editing can include changing the Stories, name, or cover.
Who can see your Highlights?
Adding a Story to a Highlight does not, by itself, make it visible to everyone. Who can see it depends on the Story’s audience and your account’s visibility settings. Check those settings if you are deciding whether a collection should be accessible to a particular audience.
If an old Story is missing
Check whether automatic saving to the Stories Archive was enabled and whether the Story is still available to your account. If it was not archived, it may not be available to add as an older Story. Instagram’s original announcement says archive saving can be switched off in profile settings.

No. A cover can be based on a Story, and some current guides describe selecting a custom image. Optional design software may help make custom covers, but it is not required to create or use Highlights.
