The phrase can refer to different layers: the audio representation, the codec that compresses or reconstructs it, or the file container that holds the audio and its metadata. Knowing which layer a name describes makes it easier to compare PCM, FLAC, MP3, AAC, WAV, and AIFF.
What does “digital audio format” mean?
Digital audio represents sound as data rather than as a continuously varying analog signal. In everyday use, “format” is an umbrella term: it may name how samples are represented, how audio is encoded, or the file structure that carries the audio. These are related, but they are not interchangeable.

- Representation: the way digital audio samples are described, such as pulse-code modulation (PCM).
- Codec: the method used to encode and decode audio. FLAC, MP3, and AAC are examples.
- Container or file format: the structure that holds audio data and may also carry metadata. WAV and AIFF commonly carry PCM audio; the extension alone does not always identify the encoding inside.
ISO describes uncompressed linear PCM carried in the ISO base media file format family and notes that similar representations occur in RIFF WAV and AIFF. That illustrates why a filename extension and the encoding it contains are not always the same thing: ISO/IEC 23003-5:2020.

| Approach | What happens to the audio data | Typical storage trade-off | Examples and context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncompressed PCM | Sample values are stored without compression. | Generally larger than compressed alternatives. | PCM carried in WAV or AIFF is a common choice for straightforward recording, editing, or preservation workflows. |
| Lossless compression | The data is compressed so it can be reconstructed without information loss. | Smaller than an uncompressed representation, though the amount of reduction varies. | FLAC is a lossless codec. The IETF’s RFC 9639 says: “It does this losslessly, i.e., it does so without losing information.” |
| Lossy compression | Some signal information is discarded to reduce data size. | Designed for smaller files or data rates. | MP3 and AAC are examples; lossy encoding is commonly used when reduced size is useful and irreversible loss is acceptable. |
These categories describe data handling, not a guaranteed listening experience. Lossy encoding removes information, but that fact alone does not establish whether a particular listener will hear a difference.
For the formal definition and technical details of FLAC, see IETF RFC 9639, published in December 2024. Android’s audio documentation also identifies common audio data formats, including MP3 and AAC: Android Open Source Project: Data formats.

What are sample rate, bit depth, and channels?
PCM audio is commonly described using three characteristics. They describe how audio is represented; they are not a single, universal measure of sound quality.
- Sample rate: how frequently the waveform is sampled, usually expressed in samples per second or hertz (Hz).
- Bit depth or word length: how many bits are used to represent each sample.
- Channel count: the number and arrangement of audio channels, such as mono or stereo.
For reference, RFC 9639 describes CD-audio PCM as 2 channels, 44.1 kHz, and 16 bits. That is a format description, not a universal recommendation for every recording or playback situation. Similarly, a higher sample rate or bit depth does not, by itself, prove that audio will sound better in every context.

FLAC’s supported technical range is broad: RFC 9639 specifies 1 to 8 channels, sample rates from 1 to 1,048,575 Hz, and sample depths from 4 to 32 bits. Those are format limits, not values listeners generally need to target.
What is the difference between WAV, MP3, and FLAC?
The names refer to different things: WAV is a container or file format, while MP3 and FLAC identify codecs. This comparison focuses on their usual roles, not every possible file configuration.

| Name | What it names | Compression and information | Practical framing |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV | A file format/container that commonly carries PCM. | When it carries uncompressed PCM, the sample data is not compressed. | Useful where straightforward uncompressed audio is wanted; specify the encoding when exact contents matter. |
| FLAC | A codec. | Lossless compression; decoded audio preserves the encoded information. | Can reduce storage needs without discarding encoded audio information. |
| MP3 | A codec. | Lossy compression; some signal information is discarded. | Can make files smaller where that trade-off is acceptable. |
AAC is another lossy codec. ISO’s page for ISO/IEC 13818-7:2006 records that the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2017 and remains current according to that status entry.

- For recording or editing: PCM in a suitable container is a straightforward uncompressed approach. A container extension does not guarantee the encoding, so confirm the file’s actual audio properties.
- For keeping audio data while reducing storage: FLAC provides lossless compression; it reduces storage relative to an uncompressed representation without a fixed compression ratio applying to every recording.
- For smaller distribution files: MP3 or AAC use lossy compression. Choose them when smaller size is valuable and the irreversible loss is acceptable for the use.
- For long-term preservation: follow the requirements of the archive or digitization workflow rather than assuming a consumer format is automatically suitable.
The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration recommends WAV-PCM in its recording and digitization guidance; this is a preservation-context recommendation, not a universal rule for all audio use. Its FAQ describes preferred recording bit depth as 24 bits per sample, minimum 16 bits, a minimum sampling rate of 44.1 kHz, and encourages 96 kHz sampling. These are NARA guidance figures, not general listening requirements: NARA: Frequently Asked Questions about Digital Audio and Video.
When selecting a format, consider whether information must be preserved, how much storage is available, what metadata or container features are needed, and whether the software and device in the actual workflow support it. Compatibility should be checked for those specific tools; the format names alone do not establish a universal compatibility ranking. NARA’s overview of digital file types and the Library of Congress’s Guide to Audio Formats provide further context.
