Conservative social networks is a descriptive label for social platforms associated with conservative audiences, backers or political positioning—not an official category with a fixed membership list. The label does not mean every user shares conservative views, and it is not simply another name for mainstream platforms where conservatives participate.

What are conservative social networks?

The phrase has no single, universally agreed definition. It is most useful when the basis for the label is made clear: a platform may be associated with a political constituency because of its audience, its founders or backers, or its public positioning. Those are different kinds of association, and none alone proves that all users—or the service as a whole—hold one ideology.

A related term used in research is alternative social media sites. Pew Research Center defined these in its 2022 study as “social media sites with relatively small user bases that have typically emerged as alternatives to larger, more established social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.” That is a study-specific definition of alternative sites, not a universal definition of conservative networks. Pew Research Center, 2022.

Which platforms are often discussed as alternatives?

Pew’s 2022 study examined BitChute, Gab, Gettr, Parler, Rumble, Telegram and Truth Social as examples of alternative social media sites. This is a list of services in that study, not a complete or permanently current inventory of conservative networks. A platform’s inclusion does not establish that all its users are conservative or that its present-day audience is unchanged.

What does the evidence say about their audiences?

Pew Research Center’s 2022 U.S. findings concern getting news from the studied services, not total membership or current active-user counts:

  • Six percent of Americans said they got news from at least one of the seven sites studied.
  • No individual site in the study was used for news by more than 2% of U.S. adults.
  • Among people who regularly got news from at least one of the sites, 66% identified as Republicans or leaned Republican.

The third figure describes the political leaning of that news audience. It does not measure the ideology of every user or show what share of all account holders are conservative. Nor should these 2022 news-use figures be treated as a live ranking of platform size. Pew Research Center, 2022.

Can a mainstream platform be politically associated too?

Yes. Political content and politically sorted audiences are also found on mainstream services, so the label “conservative social network” is not a synonym for any platform conservatives use. In a March 2024 Pew survey, 59% of X users said keeping up with politics or political issues was a reason they used X. Users of Instagram, Facebook and TikTok were more likely to say the political content they encountered was mostly liberal than mostly conservative. These results describe users’ stated reasons and perceptions, not a definitive ideological classification of those platforms. Pew Research Center, 2024.

Political sorting can happen within a mainstream platform as well. In Pew’s 2014 analysis, 47% of consistent conservatives on Facebook said the political opinions they saw there were mostly in line with their views, compared with 23% of the typical Facebook user. This is a finding about respondents’ reported experience at that time, not proof that Facebook itself was a conservative network. Pew Research Center, 2014.

Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty: The Only Networking Book You'll Ever Need
  • Harvey Mackay, who taught millions of Americans how to "swim with the sharks without being eaten alive" now dives deep into the art of which he's grandmaster: networking. In today's shark-eat-shark economy, talent alone will not save you. Genius will not. Experience will not. Guts and hard work will not. If you need a job, money, advice, help, hope, or a means to make a sale, there's only one, surefire, fail-safe place to find them - your network. But only if you have one. Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty contains gold-chip advice, accumulated over a lifetime of business success, on how to build and maintain the network you need. Harvey guarantees you'll never be more than a phone call away from a person in the position to help you get what you want - whether it's the job opportunity of a lifetime or a lifetime partner, the sales prospect of your dreams, or the career advice you've only dreamed of. Harvey shows you how to create a network of trusted, valuable contacts that is worth its weight in platinum. Harvey was born to write this book. Here he is at his practical, insightful, entertaining best. showing you step by step: How to get to know the people you need to know How to keep relationships up-to-date and alive How to ask for what you need when you need it How to sparkle in the information age and on the Internet How to unlock any door ... anywhere ... at any time Learn from Harvey's own energizing examples and those he gleaned from world-class networkers like Muhammad Ali, Lou Holtz, Erma Bombeck, Larry King, and Pat O'Brien. Harvey Mackay's success as a bestselling author, andas one of America's most sought-after business/motivational speakers, is the fruit of his networking genius. Toastmasters International has called him One of the top five speakers in the world. The New York Times recently named two of Harvey's books among the top fifteen inspirational self-help books of all time. Harvey is a nationally syndicated columnist whose weekly business advice appears in fifty newspapers around the United States. He is an active corporate CEO, a prominent civic leader, and marathoner. He and his wife of thirty-five years, Carol Ann, have three children and live in Minneapolis. Publishers Weekly Mackay (Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive) devotes much of this work to delivering essentially one messageit's not what you know, but who you know. In his breezy style, he covers aspects of why networking is important to one's career, and how to build a network. Mackay includes the 10 commandments of networking such as "I will never say no to the other guy" and "I won't stall I'll answer the call," as well as a top-10 list of networking mistakes like not assuming that credentials are power or confusing visibility with credibility. Also featured are networking stories by such personalities as Muhammad Ali, ex-football coach Lou Holtz and Neiman-Marcus founder Stanley Marcus. Each of Mackay's 83 chapters ends with a "Mackay's Maxim" such as the one that explains the book's title"People aren't strangers if you've already met them. The trick is to meet them before you need their help." As Jack Kemp notes in his introduction, "This is the book that shows you how to achieve a permanent network in a Post-it note world." (May)

How should you decide whether a platform fits the label?

Rather than relying on a single broad label, examine what is known about the service and what you want to use it for:

  • Basis for the association: Is the claim about public positioning, founders or backers, user demographics, or the content people report seeing? Do not treat these as interchangeable.
  • Audience evidence: Check who was surveyed, where and when, and whether the finding measures news use, perception or something else. A news-use statistic is not a count of all users.
  • Purpose: A service that attracts people seeking political news may not suit someone looking for general social interaction, and vice versa.
  • Rules and experience: Review the platform’s stated positioning and moderation rules directly. Policies and services can change.
  • Community scale: Look for current, comparable evidence about the particular audience or activity you care about. Pew’s 2022 findings do not establish current relative reach.

What the term does—and does not—tell you

“Conservative social networks” can be a useful shorthand for discussing platforms associated with conservative constituencies or politics. It does not identify a fixed, official set of services, establish the views of every user, or distinguish those services from mainstream platforms solely by the presence of political content. The most accurate description names the specific association and dates any audience evidence.
