Artifacts in Control Resonant are equippable items that give Dylan passive modifiers. To get one, find its Untapped Artifact, collect the materials and Source listed for its recipe, then craft it at the Artifact Formation station in the Gap. Remedy says you can equip up to three artifacts in a first playthrough; New Game Plus (NG+) adds a fourth slot and carries artifacts forward.
What artifacts do
Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov describes artifacts as “equippable items with passive modifiers that allow you to fine-tune your build.” Their effects can support survivability, combat performance, exploration, or resource economy. Some have a condition or trade-off, so check the full effect rather than choosing by the benefit alone. Remedy’s PlayStation Blog overview introduces artifacts as one part of the game’s build system.

A current guide sorts them into Survival, Combat, Exploration, and Special categories. Those are the guide’s labels, not a taxonomy Remedy has confirmed. Treat them as a browsing aid: the artifact’s own effect and any drawback are what matter when deciding whether it suits a particular fight or exploration goal.

The basic loop is to discover an Untapped Artifact in the world, gather the recipe’s required materials and Source, and form the usable item at the Artifact Formation station in the Gap. An Untapped Artifact is part of that discovery-and-crafting loop; it is not the finished equipped item. Remedy confirms the broad loop, while the practical acquisition routes and station details below come from launch-period guides rather than a complete official location checklist. Remedy’s game overview describes the Gap as the place to shape Dylan’s build.

- Find an Untapped Artifact. Guides report that these can come from main or side missions, zone vendors, zone leveling, and Resonant main bosses. One guide also lists pre-order and Deluxe Edition bonuses. These are reported routes, not an exhaustive official list; some late-game sources are still listed as unknown in the guides.
- Collect the materials and Source required by that artifact’s recipe. Check the recipe in-game, since requirements vary by item.
- Go to the Artifact Formation station in the Gap and inspect the item’s recipe and effect before crafting. A Beebom guide reports using F on PC or L1 with a controller; controls can vary with platform, bindings, or updates, so follow the on-screen prompt if it differs.
- After crafting, equip the artifact from the Loadout menu. Current guides report that unwanted artifacts can be recycled for materials; check the in-game confirmation for the return before committing.
Choose artifacts for your build
Use the available slots for effects that fit the job ahead. A survivability effect may be more useful when a fight is wearing Dylan down; a combat modifier may suit a damage-focused approach; an exploration effect may help when searching a zone. Read any condition or drawback alongside the benefit, and compare the actual item descriptions rather than assuming a category guarantees a particular effect.
Current guides also report that artifacts from the same family cannot be equipped together. Because that restriction is guide-sourced, check the game’s loadout behavior and item family before planning a combination.
Artifact slots and New Game Plus
Remedy says a first playthrough allows up to three equipped artifacts. NG+ unlocks a fourth slot, and artifacts carry over into the new run. Remedy also says NG+ is meant to create more room for experimentation because not everything can be unlocked in one playthrough; players can revisit missed World Quests, bounties, and collectibles. Other upgrades carry over as well, while traversal abilities remain tied to story progression.
Where artifacts fit in the game
The Gap is a dreamlike space connected to Dylan’s psyche and the hub for shaping a build. Artifacts complement the game’s other progression systems: supernatural combat abilities, talents, and the Aberrant, Dylan’s transforming melee weapon. They are a customization choice, not a prerequisite for crafting or a replacement for those systems.
