They can keep high-beam illumination on open areas of the road while dimming the portions aimed at detected oncoming or preceding vehicles, helping limit glare without switching the entire beam to low.
What adaptive high beams do
Sensors detect other traffic, and the headlight system adjusts parts of the projected light pattern to create shaded areas around vehicles. The rest of the road can remain illuminated at longer range. NHTSA defines ADB as a long-range forward-visibility beam that automatically modifies portions of its light to reduce glare to other road users. NHTSA’s 2022 announcement describes the rule that permits these systems in the United States.

“Adaptive headlights” is sometimes used as a broad label, so it helps to check what the feature actually does. ADB is about changing the beam pattern around detected traffic; other adaptive lighting features may instead switch beams or aim the lights in a different direction.
How ADB differs from other headlight features
| Feature | Beam behavior | Primary purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic high-beam assist | Switches between high and low beams. | Manage high-beam use as traffic or lighting conditions change. |
| Adaptive driving beam (adaptive high beams) | Reduces selected portions of the beam while keeping other areas brightly lit. | Maintain long-range illumination while limiting light directed at detected vehicles. |
| Curve-adaptive headlights | Turns or pivots the beam toward the direction of travel, often using steering input and sometimes vehicle speed. | Illuminate a bend in the road. |
The distinction is the light’s behavior: whole-beam switching, partial shading, or directional swiveling. A vehicle may have more than one lighting feature, but the names are not interchangeable. See NHTSA’s overview of driver-assistance technologies for its description of automatic high beams.

- Enter trim of your vehicle to confirm the fitment; Important: Those HID bulbs are ONLY for replacement of your stock D1S/DS1 bulb, not for Halogen bulb EVEN IF it shows "Fit"
- Tips for BMW chassis codes, fit E90/E91/E92/E93,F07/F10/F20/F21/F30/F31/F34/F80 and E60/E61 since year 2006
- The light is same as OEM bulb and is like the sun also make the driver more comfortable.Produces light up to 3 times than halogen bulb, lumen of HID is up to 3600LM while lumen of halogen lamp is 800LM,and lower watts
- Scientific design can reduce the chance of rain leakage and short circuit, the lifespan of the bulb is five times than the halogen bulb with only more stable light output
What the term means in the United States
On February 15, 2022, NHTSA announced a final rule amending Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 to allow automakers to install adaptive driving beams on new vehicles, subject to performance requirements. The rule’s definition is derived from SAE J3069 MAR2021. This describes U.S. federal regulation; it should not be read as a summary of requirements in other countries. The Federal Register rule contains the regulatory text. Availability on a particular vehicle depends on market, model year, and trim; check the exact vehicle’s equipment list and owner’s manual.
Does adaptive lighting eliminate glare?
No headlight technology should be assumed to eliminate glare in every situation. NHTSA’s technical assessment evaluated European ADB systems and found that they could shade other vehicles, but some tested cases exceeded derived low-beam glare limits. The report noted particular challenges in moving-curve and intersection scenarios, and some systems could not control glare to low-beam levels for motorcycles. These findings apply to the systems and scenarios evaluated, not necessarily every ADB system. Read NHTSA’s Adaptive Driving Beam Headlighting System Glare Assessment.

- Lights Dim Over Time, Replace In Pairs: Your lights are a pair, one is never turned on without the other. If one bulb burns out, the other isn't far behind. Replace your 9003 XtraVision Halogen bulbs in pairs for optimum performance.
- More Down Road Visibility: XtraVision bulbs have an enhanced down road visibility with no added glare.
- Reliable Design For Optimal Performance: XtraVision bulbs have a robust filament design and propriety gas mixture that can be driven for superior performance.
- Confirm Fit: When using the Amazon Part Finder, be sure to confirm the POSITION and NOTES provided. For some vehicles, bulbs may fit some positions (fog light, low beam, high beam, or high/low beam), but not all. The POSITION and NOTES ensure Exact Fit! AVAILABLE IN: 9003, 9004, 9005, 9006, 9007, 9008/H1, H3, H7, H11, H13.
- Manufactured To Be Durable: XtraVision bulbs are designed and manufactured to improve your driving situation while providing maximum durability.
IIHS reports that glare from ADB was significantly lower than glare from an SUV with HID low beams and a sedan with curve-adaptive HID low beams in a specific study. That comparison is limited to the tested vehicles and setup; it does not establish a universal result or quantify crash reduction. IIHS also notes that headlights overall matter for nighttime visibility, but general headlight statistics are not evidence of ADB-specific safety outcomes. Its headlights overview provides the broader context.
