Apple’s published guidance does not ban animated Home Screen widgets outright. WidgetKit supports brief SwiftUI animations when widget data changes, with a maximum documented duration of two seconds. App Review separately requires widgets to relate to an app’s content and functionality, and the app must meet Apple’s minimum-functionality expectations. That makes a relevant, update-driven animation compatible with the published guidance—not guaranteed approval for any particular app or design.
What Apple’s review rules say
The most direct rule is App Review Guideline 2.5.16: “Widgets, extensions and notifications should be related to the content and functionality of your app.” Apple also says in section 4.2 that apps should provide features, content and a user interface that make them useful or app-like, with adequate utility or lasting entertainment value. These are review requirements; neither is a blanket prohibition on animation. Read Apple’s App Review Guidelines.

WidgetKit’s animation documentation describes supported ways to animate widget updates. That is technical platform guidance, not a promise that a widget will pass App Review. The design still needs to be relevant to the app and the widget should provide useful content without relying on motion to make it meaningful.

Apple documents animations as a way to call attention to changes in widget data or views—for example, a number changing, an image being replaced, or a view appearing or disappearing as the widget moves to a new timeline entry. Apple’s documentation states: “Animations in widgets and Live Activities have a maximum duration of two seconds.” This is the documented maximum, not a target every animation should reach. SwiftUI offers transition(_:), contentTransition(_:) and animation(_:value:) to customize how changes appear. Views inserted or removed in response to timeline or state changes fade by default. When one update affects many views, Apple suggests disabling less important animations so the change that matters remains clear.
Why a widget cannot animate continuously
A widget is not a continuously running miniature app. Your app provides timeline entries and a reload policy; WidgetKit decides when to request another timeline and renders the widget through a separate process. An animation can accompany a supported data or view update, but the widget’s presence on screen does not keep its extension active or let it redraw indefinitely. Apple explains widget updates, and its timeline-provider documentation describes the timeline model.

Design the motion as a short response to a meaningful change, not as a persistent loop or a substitute for fresh data. The widget should still communicate its information at a glance when nothing is animating.
When an animation may not appear
Animation behavior depends on display context and operating-system support. Apple says devices with an active Always-On display do not perform animations to preserve battery life, and advises checking isLuminanceReduced. Apple also documents differences in animation support on earlier OS releases, so check the current WidgetKit documentation for the OS versions you target rather than assuming uniform behavior. How to keep an animated widget review-ready
- Make the widget’s content and actions clearly related to the app’s purpose.
- Keep the widget useful and understandable without animation; favor glanceable information and focused widget-scale actions.
- Animate a meaningful data or view change, and keep the effect within Apple’s documented two-second maximum.
- Do not promise continuous motion or imply that an animation will run on every display or OS context.
- Check the result on the OS versions and display contexts you support, including reduced-luminance states.
