Since lower AWG numbers mean thicker conductors, choose a lower-numbered gauge as the run gets longer or the speaker load gets lower. The right choice depends on the actual route length, nominal impedance, acceptable cable loss, and any instructions for your specific equipment—not on one universal maximum distance.
Why both wire gauge and length matter
Speaker wire is part of the electrical path between an amplifier and a speaker. Its resistance rises with length and falls as the conductor gets thicker. Resistance in the cable reduces the power reaching the speaker; the effect is more significant when cable resistance is a larger share of the speaker load.

Gauge labels can be counterintuitive: lower AWG means thicker wire. For example, 12 AWG is thicker than 16 AWG. Sony says 12–16 gauge wire is commonly used for amplifier or A/V receiver connections, and that 16-gauge wire is generally sufficient for short runs; longer runs call for thicker wire. Sony’s guidance was last modified November 1, 2024.
How speaker impedance changes the choice
Impedance, measured in ohms, affects how much a given amount of cable resistance matters. For the same wire gauge, a lower-impedance speaker generally calls for a shorter run or thicker wire than a higher-impedance speaker. That is why a useful recommendation must state both the load and the distance.

For example, Klipsch’s chart recommends 16 AWG for up to 24 feet at 4 ohms, but up to 48 feet at 8 ohms. It lists 14 AWG for up to 80 feet at 8 ohms. These are Klipsch’s published recommendations, not universal limits; the support page does not state a publication date. See Klipsch’s gauge chart.
Why published maximum lengths differ
Wire-length charts can disagree without either being a universal standard: they may assume different acceptable losses, account for the circuit differently, or address different installation conditions. Compare the assumptions before using a number.

Lowell Manufacturing’s 2021 guide recommends choosing a gauge so speaker-cable loss is less than 0.5 dB SPL, approximately 11% power loss. It describes this as a rule of thumb for commercial and industrial paging and music systems. Its table accounts for both conductors in the circuit:

| 16 AWG | Up to 30 feet | Up to 60 feet | Lowell’s approximate 0.5 dB loss guideline; both conductors counted |
| 12 AWG | Up to 75 feet | Up to 150 feet | Lowell’s approximate 0.5 dB loss guideline; both conductors counted |
Lowell’s figures are company guidance under that stated criterion, not a guarantee that every setup will have the same loss. Its guide says to choose speaker-cable gauge so that “less than 0.5dB of sound pressure loss (roughly 11% power loss) occurs as a result of loss in the speaker cable.” Read Lowell’s guide, revised April 20, 2021.

A Community Solutions owner’s manual gives another example of a table that counts both conductors and reports total resistance: #16 AWG at 10 feet, #14 at 25 feet, and #12 at 50 feet. The publication date for that passage is not established, so treat it as the manual’s installation guidance rather than a current universal chart. See the Community Solutions manual.
Measure the run the way the chart defines it
Measure the physical cable route from the amplifier to the speaker, not the straight-line distance through a room. Then check whether the chart’s “length” means one-way route distance or the total two-conductor circuit. Resistance calculations include the outgoing and return conductors; Lowell explicitly accounts for both in its tables. Do not double a chart’s distance unless its instructions require it, and do not assume a chart’s one-way figure already means total conductor length.

A practical way to choose speaker-wire gauge
- Check the equipment guidance. Look for the speaker, amplifier, or installation manual’s wire recommendation first. A product-specific instruction takes precedence over a general chart.
- Identify the load. Use the speaker’s nominal impedance in ohms, as specified by its manufacturer.
- Measure the cable route. Record the amplifier-to-speaker route and use a chart that clearly defines how its length is counted.
- Choose the loss criterion or chart. If you have no device-specific recommendation, compare a chart’s assumptions—especially load, conductor count, and acceptable loss—instead of treating its maximum as universal.
- Select a suitable conductor. Choose a gauge that meets the distance and load guidance; use a lower AWG number for thicker wire when the run is longer or the load is lower.
- Check installation details. Confirm that the wire fits the terminals and is suitable for the route. For in-wall wiring, verify the cable rating and applicable local code; requirements vary by jurisdiction.
When a product manual calls for a specific wire
Some installations have requirements that general speaker-wire guidance cannot replace. For example, the June 2026 JL Audio Pavillion Thin-line Subwoofer instructions recommend 16 AWG OFC wire, account for terminal resistance, and say not to use CCA. The guide recommends 16 AWG for 0–28 feet at 8 ohms and 0–14 feet at 4 ohms, then specifies 12 AWG for the next distance bands. Those directions apply to that product and installation; they should not be generalized to all speaker setups. Consult the JL Audio Pavillion installation instructions.
Does thicker or more expensive wire always sound better?
No. A short run may not need a thicker conductor than the equipment guidance calls for, and a premium cable label does not establish that the gauge, length, or load is appropriate. Check those details along with terminal compatibility and installation requirements. Banana plugs can be convenient with compatible terminals, but they do not reduce resistance in an undersized wire run.

- 16 Gauge Speaker Wire, Exact 100 FT Length: This 100 ft 16 gauge speaker wire uses a 16/2 two-conductor layout for compatible amplifiers, receivers, and passive speakers. The black variation supports measured home theater, stereo, studio, and car audio installations without mixing in other lengths or wire gauges.
- Flexible PVC Jacket for Clean Routing: The soft jacket helps this black speaker wire follow furniture, baseboards, equipment areas, and tight vehicle interiors with controlled handling. Use the speaker cable for home or car speaker wire routes where flexibility helps simplify measuring, positioning, and installation.
- Sequential Foot Markers and Clear Polarity: Printed footage along this 100 ft speaker wire helps plan cuts and track the remaining cable. Polarity markings distinguish the conductor sides so installers can maintain consistent positive and negative orientation from an amplifier or receiver to each speaker.
- Verified Copper-Clad Aluminum Construction: The conductors are made from Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA), matching the source material specification. This 16 AWG wire keeps the cable lighter and flexible for everyday speaker-level routing while avoiding unsupported material, certification, or installation-rating claims.
- Cut, Strip, and Connect for DIY Installations: Prepare the wire for compatible banana plugs, spade tips, or direct speaker terminals after measuring the route. This speaker cable works for receivers, amplifiers, home theater speakers, surround-sound positions, subwoofer speaker-level wiring, and car audio projects.
