Android XR smart glasses are designed to give you hands-free access to Gemini and phone apps, not to replace your phone. Google says the glasses pair with Android and iOS phones, and that you can leave the phone in your pocket for certain tasks. Its announcements do not establish that the glasses can work without a paired phone or internet access.
What Android XR glasses are announced to do
Google describes two types of glasses: audio models that deliver spoken help and display models that can show information in the wearer’s view. The capabilities below come from Google’s announcements and demonstrations; they are not independent test results or a guarantee that every feature will appear in every model, market or phone configuration.

Ask Gemini about what you see
You can ask Gemini questions about objects and surroundings in view. Google’s examples include identifying a cloud formation, interpreting a parking sign and finding restaurant reviews. Google’s Android XR glasses demonstration showed contextual assistance, while its later intelligent eyewear announcement described the broader feature set.
Get directions
Google says Gemini can provide turn-by-turn directions based on the wearer’s position and facing direction, help find nearby restaurants and add stops. Display glasses can put information in the lens; the 2025 prototype demonstration also showed heads-up directions. The announcements do not specify which final models will include each navigation feature.

- 【Biggest. Boldest. Smartest. — A Viewing Experience Like Never Before】This isn't just another pair of XR glasses — it's The Beast. The BIGGEST screen in XR (174″, 58° FOV). The BOLDEST display ever (1250 nits, Powerd by Latest Sony Micro-OLED). And the SMARTEST glasses on the planet — Your Screen, You Rules. Built-in 3DoF, screen customizations, Auto Transparency, and Smart Re-Centering that just work. No software needed. One glance and you'll never go back.
- 【SMARTEST: YOUR SCREEN, YOU RULES — No Software Needed】 Your Screen. You Rules! Built-in VisionPair 3DoF lets you pin, resize, and lock a 174″ screen in mid-air — no software, no dongles, no drift. Full screen customizations built right into the glasses: Anchor, Smooth Follow, 32:9 UltraWide, Side Mode. Auto Transparency switches between immersion and the real world with one tap. Smart Re-Centering snaps your view back instantly.
- 【BIGGEST: THE ULTIMATE IMMERSIVE GIANT — 174″ Screen, 58° FOV, 1200p】The largest virtual display in consumer XR. Period. A 174″ screen powered by Sony's latest-generation Micro-OLED panel pushes 1200p per eye at a class-leading 58° field of view with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Every frame is edge-to-edge sharp, silky-smooth, and jaw-droppingly vivid. It's like strapping an IMAX to your face.
- 【SMARTEST: 9-LEVEL DIMMING + AUTO TRANSPARENCY — No Software Needed】 Another reason The Beast is the smartest XR glasses ever made. One tap shifts between crystal-clear AR and full cinematic blackout across 9+ electrochromic levels — no app, no software, just hardware intelligence. Auto Transparency adapts between immersion and awareness on its own. Bright office, dim plane, pitch-dark bedroom — The Beast reads the moment for you. No glare. No reflections. Just pure immersion.
- 【BOLDEST: NEXT-LEVEL CLARITY & AUDIO — 1250 Nits + HARMAN AudioEFX】1250 nits of peak brightness — over 2× brighter than the competition — means you can actually see your screen outdoors, in sunlight, no squinting required. Pair that with HARMAN AudioEFX: deeper bass, wider soundstage, and crystal-clear highs tuned by the world's leading audio engineers. Other XR glasses make you choose between picture and sound. The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.
Handle calls and messages
Google says users can manage calls, send texts and request summaries of missed messages without reaching for the phone. This describes hands-free access while using the glasses, not a phone-free connection.
Listen to audio
Audio glasses use speakers for Gemini’s spoken responses, calls and music. These models are the screen-free option in Google’s announced lineup: information is delivered by sound rather than shown in the lens.
Take photos and videos
Google says the planned glasses can capture photos and video. Its announcement also describes asking Gemini to edit a photo with Nano Banana. It has not provided model-by-model camera specifications in the announcements cited here.

Translate speech and text
Google describes real-time spoken translation and translation of written text on signs or menus. Its 2025 prototype demonstration included live translation with subtitles; the company has not established that subtitles will be available on every model.
Use apps and ask for multi-step help
Google says the glasses can invoke phone apps by voice, naming Uber and Mondly. It also demonstrated a multi-step Gemini task to prepare a DoorDash coffee order while the phone stayed in a pocket, with the wearer still providing final order confirmation. That example shows the glasses can initiate app-based tasks; it does not mean purchases or other actions happen without user approval.
What still requires—or may require—a phone
The clearest current description is that the glasses pair with Android and iOS phones and can access phone apps by voice. Google’s May 2025 account said the glasses work “in tandem with your phone”; its May 2026 announcement specified Android and iOS pairing. The practical promise is that you may not need to take the phone out to carry out a described action.

That is different from saying the glasses are independent of a phone. Google’s announcements do not spell out whether pairing is required for every feature, which tasks run on the glasses or phone, whether cloud access is needed, or which functions work offline. A phone may remain in your pocket during a task, but the available information does not establish that it can be left behind.

| Type | How information is presented | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Audio glasses | Spoken responses through speakers | Google expects audio glasses later in fall 2026; it has not announced a precise sale date, price or retail channel. |
| Display glasses | Information shown in the wearer’s view | Google includes display glasses in the product family but has not given them a specific availability date. |
In December 2025, Google also described screen-free AI glasses and display AI glasses with features such as navigation or translation captions. These announcements point to a choice between spoken guidance and glanceable visual information, but they do not confirm the final features of individual products.
What buyers still do not know
Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement said audio glasses were expected “later this fall.” It did not name an exact launch date, price or retailer, and did not give a specific release date for display glasses. The announcements also leave several practical buying details unsettled:
- Battery life, weight and camera resolution
- Supported phone models and exact connectivity requirements
- Prescription-lens availability
- Offline functionality and whether particular tasks require a network connection
- Regional availability and retailer listings
Google has named Samsung as an Android XR collaborator and Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as eyewear partners. It also said in 2025 that it looked forward to future work with Kering Eyewear. These partnership announcements do not establish each company’s manufacturing or distribution role, confirm a specific retail product or provide a price.
