Android Auto’s status area shows the time, your phone’s signal strength and battery status. A circle with a number counts missed calls, messages or alerts waiting in the notification center; tap it to see them. Google does not provide a universal legend for every icon or variation across vehicle displays, so check your phone or vehicle documentation if you see an unfamiliar symbol.

What do the Android Auto icons mean?

Google’s screen guide describes the status area as showing the time, signal strength and battery status. It does not specify a universal icon shape, percentage convention or warning threshold for the battery, nor does it explain every variation in signal bars or network indicators.

  • Time: The status area displays the time.
  • Signal strength: The area indicates your phone’s signal strength, but Google does not define every bar or network-status variation.
  • Battery: The area shows battery status. Its exact appearance can depend on the display; Google’s guide does not set a universal icon shape or warning level.

What does the number in the circle mean?

The number counts missed calls, messages or alerts in Android Auto’s notification center. Tap the circle to open the center and view those items. The count refers to notifications, not a signal or battery measurement.

Why is the Wi-Fi icon missing from Android Auto?

Google’s current screen guide lists time, signal strength and battery status in the status area, along with the numbered notification count; it does not list Wi-Fi or GPS as standard status-area icons. That does not mean Wi-Fi or Location Services are unnecessary for every connection. For wireless setup, Google recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled, which is a separate setup instruction—not a promise that those indicators appear on the car screen. See Google’s setup instructions.

A Google Android Auto Help Community response dated August 12, 2022, said the Wi-Fi icon had been removed from the status bar in a March/April 2022 update to reduce items on the car head unit. The community thread cautions that its content may be unverified or outdated, so this is historical context rather than a guarantee about every current version or display: the community discussion.

Where do I see my phone signal and battery in Android Auto?

Look in the status area of the Android Auto screen for signal strength and battery status. Their exact appearance may vary, and Google’s screen guide does not define every visual variation. If a symbol is not covered by the guide, consult your phone and vehicle manuals rather than assigning it a meaning from a screenshot alone.

What to do if an unfamiliar icon appears

  • Check the current Android Auto screen guide and the documentation for your phone and vehicle.
  • For a connection problem, use Google’s compatibility and connection checks or contact the vehicle manufacturer. Android Auto is integrated into phones and does not need to be downloaded separately; wired setup uses USB, while wireless setup pairs the phone and car over Bluetooth.
  • Identify unfamiliar symbols while parked. Google describes Android Auto’s interface as streamlined, with large icons and minimal text, and recommends voice commands to reduce physical interaction with the display. Do not troubleshoot or study the screen while driving; see Google’s accessibility guidance.
