Port 9042 is Cassandra’s default native transport endpoint for CQL client connections. If it is reachable from the internet, that is a security issue to investigate and usually a configuration mistake to correct—but a scan result alone does not prove that an unauthenticated person can read data or that a cluster is compromised. The endpoint is one part of a Cassandra deployment; internode traffic and management access such as JMX have separate ports and controls.
What port 9042 does
Cassandra’s native transport accepts client connections using CQL, the Cassandra Query Language. Applications can connect through a Cassandra driver; operators can also use cqlsh, the command-line shell. Apache’s querying guide illustrates a local connection to localhost:9042 and describes both client drivers and cqlsh: Inserting and querying.

Port 9042 is the default configured native transport port, not a guaranteed fingerprint for every Cassandra installation. Operators can configure a different port, so the service’s actual configuration and network path matter more than the number alone.

A scan that finds 9042 open establishes that a network path can reach a listening endpoint from the scanner’s vantage point. It does not reveal by itself whether client authentication is enabled, which data or operations a connecting role can access, whether traffic is encrypted, or whether the cluster has been compromised.

That uncertainty is not a reason to leave the endpoint public. Apache’s configuration comments explicitly warn against exposing the native transport port to the internet and advise firewalling it if needed. The warning refers to the native_transport_port setting, set to 9042 in the cited configuration revision; check the cassandra.yaml shipped with the release actually in use: Apache Cassandra configuration.
Review the other Cassandra network surfaces
Securing client connections is only one part of the job. Apache’s security guidance treats client traffic, node-to-node communication, and JMX management access as distinct concerns. Assess each from the network locations that matter to your deployment:

The cited Cassandra configuration revision also warns operators to firewall the storage ports named storage_port (7000) and ssl_storage_port (7001). Treat those as documented values in that revision, not universal values for every release or deployment. Confirm the actual settings and required peer paths before changing firewall rules.

Apache’s security documentation says default JMX access is localhost-only in the configuration it describes. Remote JMX should be enabled only deliberately and protected according to the guidance for the deployed release. Why authentication alone is not enough
Authentication answers who a client is; authorization controls what that identity can do. Encryption protects traffic in transit. Network controls limit which systems can connect. These layers address different failure modes, and an authenticated CQL endpoint does not secure an exposed internode or management interface.
Apache’s security page groups client and internode TLS, client authentication, and authorization as separate security features. The page cautions that enabling binary-protocol authentication alone does not protect a cluster if internode communication or JMX remains accessible. Remediate exposure in a controlled order
- Restrict network reachability. Use host firewalls, cloud security groups, or other network controls to remove unintended public access. Allow CQL only from application networks that need it, internode traffic only among intended cluster nodes, and management access only along trusted administration paths. Verify the ports in the deployed
cassandra.yamlrather than assuming defaults. - Enable client encryption where needed. Configure Cassandra’s
client_encryption_optionswhen client traffic crosses networks that are not fully trusted. Cassandra can require encrypted client connections; a separate SSL port can also be configured where operational requirements call for one. Follow the deployed release’s instructions and ensure clients are prepared to use the resulting connection settings. - Configure internode encryption independently. Client TLS does not encrypt node-to-node traffic. Apache documents
server_encryption_optionssettings includingrack,dc, andall; choose the scope that fits the cluster topology and security requirements. - Enable authentication and authorization with a rollout plan. The stable Cassandra 5.0 documentation describes
PasswordAuthenticatorandCassandraAuthorizer.AllowAllAuthenticatorperforms no authentication checks; when authentication is disabled, permissions are effectively disabled. Prepare client credentials and define the roles and permissions they need before enforcing the new settings. Apache’s procedure includes creating a replacement superuser and configuring permissions before disabling the default superuser. Existing connections or requests without valid credentials or grants can fail during the change; consult the versioned authentication and authorization procedure. - Review JMX and test administration. Keep JMX local unless remote management is required. If remote access is enabled, restrict its network reachability and configure authentication and SSL as appropriate for the release. Test
nodetooland other administrative workflows after changes. - Verify from relevant network vantage points. Check the effective configuration and test reachability from the public internet, application networks, cluster peers, and trusted administration paths as relevant. A scan can confirm a reachable port; it cannot by itself determine permissions, data access, or compromise.
Check the documentation for your Cassandra release
Apache’s stable documentation identifies itself as Cassandra 5.0, while the latest documentation and configuration files can differ in details. The configuration warning cited above comes from a pinned repository revision, and the installation guide’s sample startup output showing an unencrypted listener on localhost at port 9042 is an example—not a statement about every release or live deployment.
