How does it estimate active browsing time?
The design described in the article attempts to distinguish someone engaging with a page from someone who simply left a tab open. It combines Chrome’s idle API with a content script that watches for keypresses, mouse movement, and scrolling. The author also says writes are debounced to avoid recording every activity signal as a separate storage operation.

Those are implementation claims, not measured accuracy results. The article provides no test protocol, source-code review, or benchmark showing how reliably the tracker classifies activity or how much work debouncing saves. Activity signals can indicate interaction, but they do not by themselves establish attention, productive work, or time spent thinking away from the keyboard.
What happens when a distracting site opens?
The author says the extension can intercept configured distracting domains at document_start and replace the page with a dark-mode focus timer. Chrome content scripts run in the context of web pages according to extension permissions and injection rules; the platform documentation explains their execution model and interaction with extension contexts. The article describes interception as happening before network resources fully resolve, but does not include code or a timing test proving that the original page can never appear first. Treat the timer as the described focus-control behavior, not a guaranteed block against every navigation or a substitute for a tested site-blocking policy.
What does the dashboard show?
ProductivityPulse is described as summarizing daily sessions in a 30-day, GitHub-style intensity heatmap. The visualization is intended to make patterns and streaks easier to notice. The author also relates patterns to “peak cognitive hours,” but the material does not establish that the chart measures cognitive performance or that using it improves productivity. It is a view of logged activity, interpreted by the user.

Where are records stored, and what does local-first mean?
The author says session records, domain breakdowns, and Pomodoro logs are stored in chrome.storage.local. Firebase backup is described as optional for people who want cross-machine synchronization. These are product descriptions from the article; the current cloud configuration and deletion behavior were not independently verified.
Chrome’s storage API is asynchronous and available to extension contexts, including service workers and content scripts. It requires the storage permission. Chrome documents storage.local as machine-local, retained when browser cache is cleared, and removed when the extension is uninstalled. Its default quota is 10 MB; Chrome 113 and earlier used a 5 MB default. The API’s access can be restricted, because local storage is exposed to content scripts by default. Local storage avoids making a cloud account a prerequisite for the described default workflow, but it is not a backup: data on one machine does not automatically follow the user to another. Chrome’s storage.sync has approximately 100 KB total capacity and 8 KB per item, so detailed time logs may need deliberate data modeling if synchronization is used. The appropriate limits and behavior can vary with Chrome version, so consult the platform documentation for the target version.
Why Manifest V3 changes the design
In Manifest V3, extension background logic commonly runs in a service worker rather than a permanently running background page. Chrome says a worker is normally terminated after 30 seconds of inactivity; requests taking more than five minutes and fetches taking more than 30 seconds can also end its lifetime. Events and extension API activity can reset timers, while later events can wake a dormant worker.

The practical consequence is that a tracker must not depend on a service worker staying alive between events. In Chrome’s words, “Any global variables you set will be lost if the service worker shuts down.” Necessary state should be persisted and reloaded when work resumes rather than kept only in globals. The lifecycle guidance is documented in Chrome’s extension service worker lifecycle documentation (last updated May 2, 2023).
That lifecycle constraint makes the storage choice central to the architecture: the worker can process events when awake, while persistent records belong in an extension storage area rather than in memory expected to survive indefinitely.
