An AWS security scan can reveal meaningful issues in the AWS resources and checks it covers, but it is not an app-wide security certificate. What it tells you depends on which AWS feature ran, which resources were in scope, and what evidence it collected. A clean result means only that the scan did not report an issue within those boundaries.
What does “AWS security scan” mean?
It can refer to different AWS services and checks. Amazon Inspector provides vulnerability findings for supported AWS workloads. AWS Security Hub aggregates security findings and offers a separate, opt-in Network Scanning feature for checking reachability of supported public resources.

Its overview describes correlating CSPM controls, Inspector findings, and other service findings to identify exposures associated with AWS resources. That can improve visibility, but it remains a resource-centered view—not a complete test of an application.
How the scan types differ
| Check | Documented scope | Evidence it can provide | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Inspector | Supported EC2 instances, ECR container images, and Lambda functions, depending on the scan type | EC2 metadata-based vulnerability and network-reachability findings; ECR operating-system and programming-language package vulnerabilities; Lambda code vulnerabilities or software vulnerabilities in package dependencies | Coverage depends on the enabled scan type and supported resources. These checks do not establish that application business logic has been penetration-tested. |
| Security Hub Network Scanning | Supported public-IP EC2 instances, Elastic IPs, Network Load Balancers, Application Load Balancers, and Classic Load Balancers | Reachable supported TCP ports, service identification, initial TCP banner bytes, HTTP response metadata, and TLS certificate details | It probes a published set of TCP ports on supported resources; it does not test every port or establish whole-app security. |
Inspector’s EC2 process extracts instance metadata and compares it with rules collected from security advisories. The precise checks and findings vary by workload: an EC2 result is not interchangeable with an ECR image or Lambda result. See AWS’s Inspector security documentation for the documented scan types.

Amazon Inspector: workload vulnerability findings
For EC2, Inspector can report package vulnerabilities and network-reachability issues based on the instance information and checks it supports. For ECR, the documented enhanced scanning covers operating-system and programming-language package vulnerabilities. For Lambda, code scanning can find code vulnerabilities, while standard scanning checks software vulnerabilities in package dependencies.
These findings describe particular resource and scan types. They should not be read as evidence that every route, authentication boundary, or business rule in a web app was exercised.

AWS describes Network Scanning as an opt-in active feature that probes supported resources from outside accounts to identify internet reachability and running services. For load balancers, it resolves and probes the load balancer’s DNS name. Instances behind a load balancer are scanned only if they have a public IP address or Elastic IP of their own.

The feature checks a published list of common TCP ports, not all possible ports. When it finds an open port, the evidence may include the identified service, initial TCP banner bytes, HTTP response metadata, and TLS certificate fields such as common name, issuer, expiry, and whether the certificate is self-signed. Enabling the feature authorizes AWS-originated TCP connection attempts, application or protocol identification, and collection of service banners, HTTP headers, and TLS metadata. The Network Scanning documentation describes the supported resources, checks, and evidence.
What a finding—or no finding—actually supports
A finding can support a narrow statement: for an eligible, covered AWS resource, the feature observed the reported condition at scan time. A finding’s value lies in its resource and evidence, not in a general verdict about the app.
Likewise, an informational result saying no supported ports were open confirms only that the feature checked its supported ports on that scanned resource. It does not prove that every port is closed, that every route or authentication boundary is safe, or that the application is secure.
Coverage also depends on enrollment and timing. AWS says existing resources may take approximately 24 hours to receive an initial scan after Network Scanning is enabled; active resources are rescanned roughly every 12 hours. A short-lived resource may terminate before it is scanned. Intermittent reachability is based on positive evidence observed at scan time, so the result is a time-bounded observation, not a permanent guarantee.

Does “self-hosted” mean AWS scanned the app?
No—not by itself. “Self-hosted” describes who operates the app, not which provider or resources host it. First identify where the server and app components actually run, then compare them with the specific AWS feature’s supported resource list.
- If the app runs on an eligible public-IP EC2 instance, Security Hub Network Scanning may check that instance’s supported TCP ports when the feature is enabled.
- If it is reached through a supported AWS load balancer, the load balancer’s DNS name may be probed; a private instance behind it is not thereby shown to have been directly scanned.
- If the app runs on a server outside AWS, these AWS resource scans do not establish coverage of that host. Do not infer otherwise from a Security Hub dashboard or from a scan of a related AWS resource.
- If the app uses ECR images or Lambda functions, Inspector findings apply to those covered resources and scan types—not automatically to every part of the deployed application.
AWS frames cloud security as shared responsibility: “Security is a shared responsibility between AWS and you.” AWS is responsible for protecting the infrastructure that runs its cloud services; customer responsibilities in the cloud depend on the service and also on data sensitivity, organizational requirements, and applicable laws and regulations. See Security in Amazon Inspector.

Quick Recap
How to use the results responsibly
- Inventory the app. Record where the host, load balancer, images, functions, and other relevant components run. Include resources outside AWS rather than assuming they are covered.
- Identify the feature and scope. Check whether you are looking at Inspector workload findings, Security Hub posture controls, Network Scanning evidence, or an aggregation of findings. Confirm which specific resources and scan types are enabled.
- Read findings at resource level. Note the affected resource, finding type, evidence, and scan time. For Network Scanning, distinguish the ports and response details actually observed from any broader claim about exposure.
- Address remaining questions separately. If you need assurance about application behavior, authentication, business logic, or hosts outside AWS coverage, use an appropriately authorized application or host assessment. The AWS scan findings alone do not answer those questions.
