How to Build a Local Event Scout with Open-Weight AI

A useful local event scout gets facts from an event source, filters them in code, and uses an on-device model only to rank and explain matching listings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a local event scout by combining a structured event source with ordinary filtering code and a locally run model for ranking and explanations. The model can help decide which matching events suit someone’s interests; it should not invent listings or determine factual details such as dates, venues, or ticket availability. A practical first version can use Ticketmaster’s Discovery API for event data and Ollama as one option for local inference.

How the event scout works

Keep event collection separate from model inference. A local model does not make the event data local: if your app queries an event provider, the search request still goes to that provider. Tell users which service receives their query and what fields are sent.

  1. Collect: Fetch events from one source, such as the Ticketmaster Discovery API.
  2. Normalize: Convert each result into a consistent record containing its source ID, title, date and time, venue, location or coordinates when available, categories, and original event URL.
  3. Deduplicate: Use the source ID where possible; otherwise compare stable fields such as title, date, and venue. Keep the original source identifiers and links.
  4. Filter in code: Exclude events outside the chosen date range or geographic radius and apply any required category filters.
  5. Rank with the local model: Give the model only the remaining records and the user’s preferences. Ask it to rank candidates or explain why an event may fit.
  6. Show source-backed results: Display the event’s actual fields alongside the model’s explanation, with a link to the original listing so users can verify current details.

This is a recommended design, not a tested or benchmarked implementation. Deterministic filtering helps keep dates and distances grounded in source data; the model adds flexible matching and readable explanations.

Discovery API for targeted searches

Ticketmaster Discovery API v2 supports event searches and filters including keyword, venue, postal code, radius, source, market, and date. Its event details can include venue and location, attractions, and a Ticketmaster event URL. You need a developer API key, sent in the apikey query parameter. The API is one provider’s inventory, not a complete index of everything happening in a town.

The API documentation currently lists a default quota of 5,000 calls per day and a rate limit of 5 requests per second. These are vendor-documented limits, which can change; check the documentation and applicable terms before building around them. Search pagination, rate handling, normalization, deduplication, and removal of past events all add implementation work.

Discovery Feed for periodic bulk ingestion

For batch-style collection, Ticketmaster’s Discovery Feed provides country-specific event files in CSV or JSON, plus metadata describing available feeds. It requires a developer key. Its documented sources include Ticketmaster, FrontGate Tickets, and Ticketmaster Resale, and coverage is limited to the listed markets and ticketing sources. The XML feed format is deprecated.

A feed can simplify periodic bulk loading, but its contents may be less fresh than targeted queries between refreshes. Decide how often to download it and how to expire past events. Feed event URLs include affiliate tracking only for publishers enabled in Ticketmaster’s affiliate program; access, eligibility, regions, and terms must be confirmed before relying on that feature.

Discovery API On-demand, targeted searches using location, date, or other supported filters Requires request handling, pagination, rate management, and normalization; results remain limited to the provider’s inventory.
Discovery Feed Periodic bulk loading from country-specific CSV or JSON files Requires scheduled refreshes and stale-event cleanup; coverage is bounded by the feed’s listed countries and sources.

Run the model locally

Ollama documents a local API at http://localhost:11434/api and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:11434/v1. Its documentation says local requests need no API key; cloud requests do. One workflow is to download a compatible model, start Ollama on the computer running the scout, and have the application send candidate event records and preferences to the local endpoint.

Ollama is one runtime option, not a requirement. Hugging Face’s inference documentation identifies local endpoint choices including llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM, LiteLLM, and TGI. Select a runtime and model based on compatibility, license, quality on your event-matching task, and the host computer’s actual capacity. No particular model, hardware specification, or performance winner is established here; test candidate models with representative local event data before choosing.

Keep factual data and model output distinct

Pass structured event records to the model and request a constrained result, such as an ordered list of source IDs with a short reason for each match. Your application should map those IDs back to the original records rather than treating model-generated event facts as authoritative.

  • Calculate date-window membership and distance in application code, not from a model’s guess.
  • Keep dates, venue names, locations, categories, source identifiers, and event URLs tied to the source record.
  • Have the model rank or explain candidates against preferences such as “live music,” “family-friendly,” or “within walking distance,” while making clear that its match explanation is a judgment.
  • Link through to the source listing for current details, including changes that may happen after ingestion.

What local means for privacy

According to Ollama’s privacy policy, “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” The policy also permits collection of limited device and usage metadata and treats cloud-hosted requests separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That statement concerns locally processed model content under Ollama’s policy; it does not mean every part of an event scout is private. A request to Ticketmaster still goes to Ticketmaster, and application analytics, operating-system activity, or other components have their own data flows. Minimize query fields sent to event providers and disclose those flows clearly.

Validate the scout before relying on it

  • Try representative searches across different locations, dates, and interests; inspect whether the source returns the events you expect.
  • Check that pagination and rate handling do not silently drop results.
  • Verify that duplicate records collapse without merging distinct events.
  • Confirm date, time-zone, distance, and expired-event behavior against the underlying records.
  • Compare model rankings with your own judgments and inspect whether the model invents details or returns unknown IDs.
  • Review the selected model’s license, runtime compatibility, and current hardware requirements before deployment.
