Other requests are sent to a provider’s servers, where larger models and more computing capacity are available. Many current systems make that choice per request, so an “AI” label does not tell you where every feature runs.
The practical answer depends on the exact phone, operating-system version, language, region, account settings and feature. Below is how the split works, what current Apple, Google and Samsung documentation actually establishes, and how to check a feature before assuming your data stays on the handset.

What “on-device AI” means
On-device processing means the phone’s local CPU, GPU or neural-processing unit runs the model or another AI operation. The input needed for that operation can remain on the handset instead of being uploaded to a remote service. Local processing can reduce latency, continue to work when a supported task has no network connection, and limit the amount of personal content leaving the device.
Recommended Free Tools
Those benefits apply only to the locally supported part of a feature. A phone may still need an internet connection for account authentication, downloading a model, checking permissions, synchronizing results or handling a more demanding step. Do not treat “works with on-device AI” as a promise that the entire app is offline.

Apple’s developer documentation lists local capabilities for speech, vision, translation, natural-language processing and model APIs, while its iPhone privacy guide says many Apple Intelligence models run entirely on-device (Apple developer overview; Apple privacy guide).
What still needs the cloud
Cloud processing occurs when a remote server runs the model or performs part of the request. Servers can host models larger than a phone can store or execute efficiently, combine information from online services, and provide more capacity for complex or lengthy requests. The trade-off is a dependence on connectivity and the transmission of relevant request data to that service.
Cloud use is not automatically unsafe, nor is local use automatically private. The important questions are what the provider says it sends, how long it retains the data, which controls you have, and whether the claim applies to the exact feature you are using. A vendor’s privacy architecture should be attributed to that vendor rather than generalized to every phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the boundary is usually hybrid
A hybrid or routed system evaluates a request and chooses local or server processing according to complexity, available hardware, settings and service availability. Apple explicitly describes a local-first approach: many requests run on the iPhone, while more complex requests can be handled by Private Cloud Compute using larger server-based models.
Apple’s user guide states: “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” It also says, “For more complex requests that require more computational capacity, Apple Intelligence can use Private Cloud Compute, which extends the privacy and security of your Apple products like iPhone into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence.” These are Apple’s descriptions of its own architecture, not a rule for other manufacturers.
What current phones advertise—and what that proves
Feature lists establish what software can offer, but they do not by themselves disclose the processing location of each operation. Use the following distinction when reading specifications:
| Feature or claim | What the documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Local speech, vision, translation or language APIs | The platform provides on-device models or APIs for those categories. | That every app using the category runs locally, or that no network is ever required. |
| Apple Intelligence | Many models run on-device; complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute. | A universal offline guarantee or one fixed route for every feature. |
| Gemini Intelligence on Android | Google lists automation, suggestions, voice cleanup, writing tools, sign-to-text and Gemini Notebook, subject to eligibility and limits. | The route for each listed capability. Google’s feature page does not identify every computation as local or cloud-based. |
| Galaxy AI on a Galaxy Z Flip7 or Z Flip7 FE | Samsung lists Gemini actions, Now Brief, Circle to Search, Interpreter and Note Assist for those US models. | The processing location of each feature, or availability on every Galaxy model and market. |
Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute
Local work
Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run entirely on compatible iPhones. Local processing can cover supported language assistance, summarization, speech and other model operations, with exact behavior changing by operating-system release and feature.

For a request requiring more computational capacity, Apple Intelligence can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says relevant request data is processed to fulfill the request, the result is returned to the device, and Private Cloud Compute does not retain that data afterward. Apple also says independent privacy and security researchers can inspect the server software. These statements describe Apple’s design and should not be read as independent certification of every implementation detail.
How to inspect requests
The iPhone privacy guide documents a report that users can create to inspect requests sent to Private Cloud Compute. The same guide explains that availability depends on a compatible iPhone, supported language and region, and that some server-side features have daily usage limits. Check the current iOS documentation before relying on a specific model list or language.
Gemini Intelligence on Android
Eligibility requirements
Google’s current Android Help page lists these conditions for Gemini Intelligence eligibility:
- At least 12GB of RAM.
- A qualified system-on-chip with advanced on-device AI processing.
- Current media-processing capabilities.
- Applicable software benchmarks and supported system software.
The 12GB figure is a published eligibility threshold, not a measurement of how much of your personal AI usage runs locally or a guarantee of performance.
Feature categories
Google lists multi-step tasks across selected apps, contextual or proactive suggestions, Gboard voice cleanup (Rambler), writing tools, sign-to-text and Gemini Notebook. Some capabilities have usage limits. Personal Intelligence can use Google apps that you explicitly connect, while Proactive Assistance can use selected on-device sources such as messages and screenshots. Permissions, location, system preferences and app settings can change the result.
Controls and automation safeguards
In a May 12, 2026 Android Security post, Dave Kleidermacher, Google’s vice president of Platforms Security and Privacy, wrote: “With AI powered features, users have granular authority to opt-in and out of entire features or disable specific components at any time.” Google also says Gemini app automation is restricted to apps you allow and is designed to request confirmation before purchases (Google Android Security). These are Google’s stated controls; the feature list itself does not prove that every step executes on-device.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI example
Samsung’s US support page for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE lists Gemini actions across apps, Now Brief, Circle to Search, Interpreter and Note Assist (Samsung Support US). It says Samsung-provided basic Galaxy AI features are free, while enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features have separate terms and may incur fees.
This is a model-specific US example. Samsung’s list explains which functions are offered, not whether each function is local, cloud-based or routed between both. Check the support page for your exact model, country and software version before assuming the same behavior.
Which phone AI tasks are good candidates for local processing?
Local models are most practical when the task is bounded and the required model fits the phone’s memory and processor. Typical examples include:
- Transcribing a short recording or recognizing speech commands.
- Applying a supported writing transformation or text classification.
- Translating among languages included in an installed local model.
- Detecting objects, faces or document structure in an image.
- Cleaning up voice audio or converting a sign to text when the feature supports local inference.
Even in these categories, the exact app may choose a server for unsupported languages, longer inputs, higher-quality output or a feature that depends on an online account. Documentation for the specific feature is the deciding evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether your data leaves the phone
- Open the feature’s official help page. Look for explicit wording such as “on-device,” “processed on your device,” “server,” “cloud” or “requires an internet connection.” A general product slogan is not enough.
- Check the model and software version. Record the phone model, chipset, RAM, operating-system release and app version. Eligibility can change after an update.
- Review permissions and connected sources. Inspect microphone, camera, photos, contacts, messages, location and connected-app permissions. Disable sources you do not need.
- Test without connectivity, carefully. Turn on airplane mode and try a non-sensitive sample. If the feature fails, that proves a network dependency for that path; success does not prove that every mode or future request is local.
- Read the provider’s retention statement. Confirm what is transmitted, how it is used, whether it is retained and which controls or deletion options exist.
- Use available activity or privacy reports. Apple documents a report for Private Cloud Compute requests. Other platforms may expose activity logs or connection controls in account and app settings.
Do you need a new phone?
Not necessarily. A phone may already support local speech, translation, vision or writing features through its operating system or individual apps. Replacement becomes relevant only when the desired feature has a documented hardware, memory, operating-system or regional requirement that your current device cannot meet.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact model and regional edition | Manufacturers often enable features on named models and markets rather than an entire product family. |
| RAM and system-on-chip | Local models need memory and specialized acceleration; Google’s Gemini Intelligence page currently specifies 12GB or more of RAM plus a qualified chip. |
| Operating-system and app version | AI capabilities and routing can change with software updates. |
| Language and country | Apple documents language and region limits; rollout timing can differ by market. |
| Account, permissions and usage limits | Connected apps, opt-in settings, daily caps and subscription or third-party terms can restrict use even on eligible hardware. |
Privacy and security: the questions that matter
Ask six feature-specific questions before entering sensitive material:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Is the model step local, server-based or selected dynamically?
- What exact text, audio, images, messages or screenshots are transmitted?
- Is content retained, used for improvement or deleted after fulfillment?
- Can you disable the feature or disconnect individual apps and data sources?
- Does automation require confirmation before consequential actions such as purchases?
- Are there regional, account or age restrictions?
Apple says Private Cloud Compute does not retain relevant request data after fulfillment and makes server software available for inspection by independent researchers. Google describes opt-in controls, permission boundaries and automation safeguards. Treat both as provider statements, compare them with the settings visible on your phone, and avoid assuming that one company’s policy applies to another.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the AI badge means local processing
Branding covers multiple models and routes. Verify the individual feature.
Confusing “on-device capable” with “offline everywhere”
Activation, account checks, model downloads, cloud-only languages and advanced modes can still require a connection.
Using a hardware threshold as a usage statistic
Numbers such as 12GB of RAM describe eligibility, not the percentage of requests processed locally or the quality of every response.
Ignoring fees and limits
Server capacity can be subject to daily limits, subscriptions or third-party terms. Samsung’s cited US page, for example, distinguishes free basic Galaxy AI features from enhanced and third-party features that may incur fees.
Testing with private data first
Use a disposable sample while you establish the route, permissions and retention policy. Only then decide whether the feature is appropriate for confidential content.
A practical decision rule
Choose local processing when the task is supported, offline operation matters, and minimizing transmission is your priority. Accept routed or cloud processing when you need a larger model, cross-app automation or capabilities unavailable on the handset, after checking the provider’s data handling and controls. For any purchase decision, compare processing route, network dependence, exact hardware eligibility, privacy settings, regional availability and cost instead of relying on a single “AI phone” label.
