An AI mindset coach may help you sort through thoughts, brainstorm options, or rehearse a skill you have already discussed with a qualified professional. It cannot reliably diagnose or treat a mental health condition, understand your full personal context, or replace human care. Use it, if at all, as a low-stakes aid—not your only support and never your crisis plan.
Can an AI coach help with your mindset?
It can be useful for bounded tasks such as turning a vague concern into questions to consider, listing possible next steps, or prompting reflection. The American Psychological Association (APA) also describes practicing skills learned in professional treatment as a possible supplemental use. These are aids to thinking, not evidence that a chatbot can assess your wellbeing or deliver treatment. APA’s health advisory distinguishes general-purpose chatbots from wellness apps, digital therapeutics, and telehealth; evidence about one category should not be assumed to apply to another.

Keep the task low-stakes and specific. For example, you might ask a bot to help you organize what you want to discuss with a therapist. Check its suggestions against your own judgment and, when relevant, a clinician’s guidance. A fluent or reassuring answer is not a clinical assessment, and AI should not be your only resource for relieving symptoms. The APA consumer guide cautions that generated responses can be confident and wrong.

No. The APA says, “AI is not a safe or effective replacement for care from a licensed mental health professional.” A chatbot may lack important personal and historical context, as well as nonverbal cues. It cannot be counted on to make a dependable diagnosis or clinical judgment. If you need an assessment, a treatment plan, or help with symptoms, speak with a qualified mental health professional rather than treating a chatbot as a clinician.

Keep human relationships in the picture, too. The APA advises against treating AI as a friend, romantic partner, licensed professional, or main source of emotional support. Notice whether chatting with it is crowding out time with people, sleep, work, hobbies, or social interaction. If use is creating confusion, distress, dependency, or isolation—or displacing professional care—step back and talk with someone you trust or a qualified provider.
Is it safe to tell an AI chatbot about your mental health?
Do not assume that a private-feeling conversation is confidential. Before sharing sensitive information, check the service’s privacy terms and settings to understand what it collects, stores, retains, shares, or uses to improve or train its systems. The APA warns that tools may retain or share personal and health-related information. Because a chatbot can feel socially responsive, it may also encourage more disclosure than you intended.

Privacy and safety vary by product. The APA notes that tools differ in design and may produce inaccurate or harmful output; some may also be designed to maximize engagement. A service’s name or claim to be a “coach” does not establish that it is clinically validated.

When should you talk to a therapist instead of using AI?
Arrange professional support for ongoing or worsening concerns
Contact a qualified mental health professional if symptoms persist, intensify, or make daily responsibilities difficult to manage. Professional help is also the appropriate route when you need diagnosis or treatment, or when AI use is leaving you more distressed, confused, dependent, or isolated. The APA recommends consulting a licensed provider when possible and being candid with your care team about how you use AI.
Get immediate human help for a crisis
The APA says, “Do not rely on AI in a crisis.” Seek immediate live human help for thoughts of harming yourself or another person, urges to self-harm, hearing or seeing things others do not, or strong distressing beliefs others do not share.
In the United States, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department. Outside the United States, contact local emergency services or a local crisis service. A chatbot is not a substitute for these live, local supports.

How to evaluate an AI mindset or mental health tool
Compare the specific service and intended use rather than relying on labels such as “AI coach” or “AI therapy.” The APA and FDA materials point to several useful questions:
- Purpose: Does the service describe itself as general wellness support, coaching, or clinical treatment? What does it actually claim to do?
- Evidence: Is there evidence for this particular tool, use, and population? Preliminary findings about purpose-built mental health technologies do not establish that general-purpose chatbots work in the same way. The APA says current research on general-purpose chatbot use does not permit strong conclusions.
- Clinical involvement: Is a qualified clinician involved in designing or overseeing the service, and is that role clearly described?
- Crisis boundaries: Does the service explain what it cannot handle and direct people to live support when needed? Do not depend on it to recognize every crisis.
- Data handling: What information is collected, retained, shared, or used for training or improvement?
- Effect on care and relationships: Does use support your existing care and relationships, or interfere with them?
Regulatory status depends on what the software does
The FDA’s Digital Health Policy Navigator focuses on software functions and their intended use, not simply whether a product uses AI. Its examples distinguish software that supplements professional care through coaching without specific treatment suggestions from software that analyzes patient-specific information or gives directives for diagnosis or treatment. Some coaching functions may fall within enforcement discretion, while functions that could pose patient-safety risks may receive regulatory oversight. This is not a blanket approval or disapproval of mental health apps. Do not infer that a product is clinically validated or regulated from its name alone. See the FDA’s Digital Health Policy Navigator, Step 7.
