An AI agent can read pages and use browser controls available in its browser context. If that context is already signed in to a site, the agent may be able to act within that account. But not every agent can see your personal browser data: a separate hosted browser has its own cookies and sessions, while connecting an agent to a personal browser profile can expose tabs, cookies, session storage, local storage, and other browser data.
The distinction that matters is not simply whether an agent is “using a browser.” It is which browser profile or session it can reach, what the integration permits it to do, and whether you must approve individual actions. Page content and tool outputs can also contain hostile instructions, so access to an authenticated browser should be treated as a security-sensitive capability.

What browser access can mean
“Browser access” can describe different technical arrangements. An agent might use a new browser session hosted separately from your computer, connect to a profile you already use, or interact with a site through tools the site has exposed for agents. Those arrangements do not provide the same data or authority.

OpenAI’s Cloud Browser documentation says that its Cloud Browser uses its own browser data, cookies, and signed-in sessions. It does not use the user’s local browser tabs, history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions, or existing sign-ins. In practical terms, an agent in that environment does not automatically inherit the accounts already open in your everyday browser. It can still access accounts you sign in to within the hosted session, subject to that product’s controls.

A connected personal browser profile
Chrome DevTools auto-connect documentation describes a different arrangement: the agent can access data in the connected Chrome profile, including open tabs, cookies, session storage, local storage, and data available through JavaScript browser APIs. The documented feature can also let an agent read, inspect, debug, and modify browser content. Connecting a profile therefore may expose considerably more than the one page you intend to automate.
A site-specific tool interface
Some sites expose structured tools to agents through WebMCP. Instead of relying only on visible page controls, the agent may call tools with names, parameters, descriptions, and returned data. These interfaces can make tasks more direct, but their descriptions and outputs are also inputs that an agent must handle safely.
Before granting access, identify which arrangement is in use. Do not assume that all browser agents can access local cookies, or that none can: the answer depends on the integration and the browser context it connects to.

A session cookie or other browser state can keep a site signed in without asking for a password on every visit. If an agent can operate in that authenticated session, Chrome’s agent security guidance notes that it may act within the user’s signed-in site context. The precise actions depend on the site, the browser integration’s permissions, and any confirmation steps it requires.

Depending on the account and available controls, browser activity could include reading private pages, changing settings, sending a message, or advancing a transaction. The key distinction is between being allowed to visit an origin and being authorized to perform every action available there. Approval to use a site should not be treated as permission to send a message, purchase something, transfer money, or alter important account data.
Likewise, an agent’s ability to see a cookie does not by itself establish that it has copied or misused it. The documented capabilities show potential access in some connected profiles and authenticated sessions; they do not quantify the likelihood of theft or misuse in any particular integration. Treat session access as sensitive because it can carry account authority, not because every agent necessarily handles it unsafely.
How page content can manipulate an agent
Prompt injection is an attempt to make an AI system treat untrusted content as instructions. In a browser task, that content may appear on a page, in a third-party comment, or in a tool’s name, parameter description, or response. Chrome for Developers’ WebMCP security guidance describes both malicious tool manifests and contaminated outputs as attack vectors. A page might, for example, contain text that urges the agent to disclose information or navigate somewhere unrelated to the user’s request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a problem of instruction handling, not simply a suspicious-looking link. Language models process instructions and data together, and Chrome’s guidance cautions that model safeguards alone cannot guarantee protection against indirect prompt injection. A page can include hostile text even when the surrounding site or task is otherwise legitimate. That does not mean every such string will succeed; it means that an agent should not treat page or tool content as having the authority of the user.

Chrome’s security articles describe prompt injection as repeatedly demonstrated and say its prevalence on the web is increasing, but provide no quantified rate in the cited material. There is no supported percentage here for how often an attack works or how effective a particular defense is. The practical response is to limit what the agent can reach and require checks before it performs consequential actions.
Cookies, passwords, and sign-in security
Why a session cookie matters
A cookie used to maintain a session can be sensitive because access to an active session may allow account access. A connected profile may expose cookies to the agent, while an isolated hosted browser has its own cookie store and sessions. These are different exposure boundaries; neither description alone tells you how a particular service stores, protects, or uses its credentials.
OWASP’s Session Management Cheat Sheet explains that the Secure cookie attribute instructs browsers to send that cookie only over encrypted HTTPS connections. This helps protect cookie transport over the network, but it does not prevent an agent with access to the browser profile from interacting with the session. It is not a defense against prompt injection, unauthorized account actions, or every other account-security risk.

Credentials should be entered through a dedicated sign-in flow, not pasted into ordinary chat or task text. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance recommends showing the destination where credentials will be submitted so the user can verify it, masking values as they are entered, keeping credentials out of logs and analytics, clearing the form after submission, and disabling automatic retries for credential submissions.

Those safeguards address distinct failure modes. Showing the destination helps the user detect an unexpected origin; masking values limits exposure on screen; excluding them from logs and analytics reduces unnecessary retention; clearing the form avoids leaving values in a completed page; and disabling automatic retries prevents a failed or ambiguous submission from silently repeating. None should be mistaken for a guarantee that every integration implements them.
Choose the browser context that fits the task
| Decision | Separate hosted session | Connected personal profile |
|---|---|---|
| Personal cookies and sign-ins | Uses its own browser data and sessions, according to OpenAI’s Cloud Browser documentation. | Chrome DevTools auto-connect can expose cookies and storage from the connected Chrome profile. |
| Available browser state | Separate from local tabs and history in the documented Cloud Browser. | Can include active tabs, extensions, and live application state in the documented Chrome feature. |
| Suitable when | The task can be done in a new session, with sign-in completed there if needed. | The task genuinely requires the exact state or sign-in already present in the user’s browser. This is an inference from the feature descriptions, not a universal product rule. |
| Main consideration | Verify the requested origin and use a dedicated authentication flow. | Connect only when profile-wide exposure is justified; restrict origins and confirm state-changing actions. |
If a task does not need your existing tabs or sign-ins, a separate browser context reduces the amount of personal browser data in scope. If it does require your current session, recognize that connecting the profile may expose more than the target page. The documented Chrome auto-connect behavior includes profile data beyond cookies, while the Cloud Browser description specifically separates its browser data from the local browser.

- Identify the session. Establish whether the agent is using a hosted browser, a connected personal profile, or a site-specific tool interface. Check the integration’s documentation rather than inferring access from the phrase “browser agent.”
- Use the least exposed context that can do the job. Prefer a separate browser profile or hosted browser when the task does not require your existing personal sessions. If connecting a personal profile, account for its tabs, cookies, and browser storage as data the agent may access.
- Limit permitted origins. Restrict the agent to the sites needed for the task, especially when it is authenticated. Chrome recommends origin restrictions to reduce exposure to malicious or unrelated origins and data exfiltration. An origin limit narrows where the agent can interact; it does not approve every action on an allowed site.
- Separate instructions from retrieved content. Tell the agent that page text and tool outputs are untrusted data, not instructions that can override your request. Chrome describes “spotlighting” as one possible technique and recommends acknowledging hints that content is untrusted. This is a mitigation strategy, not a guarantee against manipulation.
- Set action-level approval. Require confirmation before actions that send, purchase, transfer, publish, delete, or materially change account data. Treat tools as state-changing unless they are clearly read-only. Origin approval alone does not confirm each individual action, and WebMCP tool availability does not establish that a call is harmless.
- Minimize information shared. Provide only the personal data needed for the task. Chrome recommends data-minimization checks and alignment critics at execution points, where an action can be assessed against the user’s request before it runs.
- Review the outcome and end the session cleanly. Check what the agent actually changed or sent. OpenAI’s computer-use guide instructs applications to review saved browser activity and delete a session when finished; its Cloud Browser help describes clearing browser data for an individual site or for all sites.
What a documented credential approval flow looks like
OpenAI’s Agents API computer-use guide provides one specific example of how an application can mediate access. When the agent requests approval for a new origin, the application receives an approval request and presents the origin and reason so the user can approve, deny, or cancel. Authentication requests identify the credential origin, fields, and available login options.
Recommended Free Tools
The user then submits the values through a dedicated event. In that documented workflow, submitted values stay outside the agent’s model input and are omitted from authentication response items in session history. The application should continue processing events and verify the result: an accepted credential submission does not prove that sign-in succeeded.
Best Value
This is a description of that API workflow, not a standard followed by every browser agent. When evaluating another integration, look for equivalent destination verification, protected credential entry, explicit action approval, and a way to confirm that the requested sign-in or action actually succeeded.
What these protections do—and do not—establish
Origin limits, action confirmations, credential-handling controls, data minimization, and session cleanup each address different parts of the risk. No single setting covers all of them. For example, restricting an agent to a site can reduce exposure to unrelated origins, but it does not stop harmful instructions embedded in that site’s page content. Confirming a transaction can prevent an unapproved state change, but it does not make it appropriate to expose an entire personal browser profile when a separate session would suffice.
For teams building or deploying agents, Chrome recommends security evaluations that measure whether mitigations prevent unauthorized actions or data exfiltration, along with production monitoring of signals such as token exhaustion, logs, trends, and user feedback. The guidance does not supply a universal pass rate or benchmark, so a defense should be evaluated in the context of the particular agent, tools, permissions, and tasks rather than treated as proven by its presence alone.
