Amazon does not publish a universal percentage threshold or show shoppers how many units were returned. If you see the label, compare the listing’s specifications with your needs and look for recurring, relevant complaints in customer reviews.
What does “Frequently returned” mean on Amazon?
Amazon says it uses machine learning to flag items with high return rates so shoppers know to check the product description and reviews. Its seller guidance describes the comparison more specifically: a listing may receive the badge when its customer-initiated return rate is higher than that of similar products, taking product type, department, and average sale price into account. Amazon says delivery problems and fraudulent returns are excluded from the rate used for badging. Amazon’s European explanation and seller guidance describe the system.

The badge is a relative signal, not a public return count. Amazon has not stated a single percentage that triggers it across products, nor does the label say how many buyers returned the item. Seller guidance also says there must be enough recent sales to calculate a rate and that badging uses returns that have matured and been fully processed. The rates visible to sellers in their dashboard can differ from the calculation used to assign the badge.
Does the badge mean the product is defective?
No. The badge does not identify why a particular customer returned a particular item, and it does not establish that every unit is faulty. Treat it as a cue to investigate the listing, not as a diagnosis of a defect. Amazon’s consumer guidance recommends checking the description and reviews; it does not say the badge reveals the reasons behind returns. Amazon’s explanation of the badge provides that shopper-facing advice.

Should you buy a product with the label?
It depends on whether the listing and the review pattern suit your use. Before buying, check the details that can make a product a poor match even when it works as described:
- Specifications and dimensions: Confirm measurements, included components, and any requirements that matter for your setup.
- Fit and compatibility: For clothing, shoes, accessories, or electronics, verify sizing, supported devices, connections, and other compatibility details.
- Recurring review themes: Look for multiple reviewers describing the same problem, then decide whether it would affect your use. A repeated complaint about fit may matter for apparel; a compatibility issue may matter more for a device.
One review or a vague complaint is not enough to establish a pattern. The badge itself does not tell you which issue to look for, so use the listing and reviews to assess the specific product and your intended use.

What support may be available after purchase?
For eligible items, Amazon says buyers can find support through Your Orders, including setup help, troubleshooting, manufacturer contact information, and help replacing missing or broken parts. Replacements or exchanges may also be available for eligible products. Availability depends on the item; these support options do not change what the badge means. Amazon’s consumer article describes these features.
What can sellers do about a badged listing?
Amazon’s seller guidance says sellers can use the Voice of the Customer dashboard to view badged and at-risk ASINs, return-rate information for three- and 12-month periods, and suggested rates. Those dashboard figures are useful for identifying trends, but they are not an exact public count and may differ from the matured-return calculation used for badging. Amazon’s Voice of the Customer guidance and return-rate guidance explain these distinctions.

Amazon recommends reviewing listing accuracy, images, sizing information, product quality, packaging, and return reasons shown in the dashboard. It says the badge is removed automatically when the customer-initiated return rate is brought in line with similar products; its guidance does not describe an exception or appeal process.

Amazon’s published material explains the badge in European consumer-facing content and in seller guidance, but it does not establish a complete country-by-country rollout or prove that the same rules apply in every marketplace. The comparison criteria and process described here are Amazon’s stated guidance, not an independently verified account of every marketplace implementation.
