The dispute concerns how Google localizes a map label—not an international treaty changing the Gulf’s name worldwide. The latest reported legal steps include a first filing dismissed for lack of jurisdiction and a later action whose final outcome is not established in the available reporting.
Why Mexico objected to Google’s map label
In January 2025, Google said it would update map labels when official U.S. government geographic databases changed. After the U.S. database update, Google Maps began displaying “Gulf of America” to users in the United States. Reporting described the map as showing “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico and a combined or localized label in other locations. Google’s statement and contemporaneous reporting describe the change.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum argued that the U.S. executive action applied only to the United States’ continental shelf, not to the entire Gulf, which includes areas under Mexican jurisdiction. Her objection was therefore both about sovereignty and about the scope of a U.S. government naming decision.

In the official transcript, she said: “Google Maps no es una norma internacional, es una empresa privada, es una empresa privada que tiene convenios con distintos territorios y países para poder hacer este mapeo de todo el planeta, pero aun cuando sea una empresa privada, se ha convertido en una referencia internacional.” Presidencia de la República transcript, 13 February 2025.

Does Google Maps use “Gulf of America” everywhere?
No. The reported display varied by user location: users in the United States saw “Gulf of America,” users in Mexico saw “Gulf of Mexico,” and users elsewhere could see a combined or localized label. Google’s stated approach was to follow official government geographic-name databases for U.S. map users; that does not establish a single worldwide label. Google’s explanation and reporting on the rollout describe the regional variation.
| User location | Reported Google Maps label | What that shows |
|---|---|---|
| United States | “Gulf of America” | Google said it would follow the updated U.S. government geographic database for U.S. users. Google’s statement |
| Mexico | “Gulf of Mexico” | Reporting described this as the label shown to users in Mexico. Contemporaneous reporting |
| Elsewhere | Combined or localized label, as reported | The presentation depended on location; reporting does not establish one uniform label for every other country. Contemporaneous reporting |
A map label is not the same thing as an internationally binding geographic name. The reported change describes Google’s localized presentation in response to government data, not a treaty or a ruling that renamed the entire Gulf for all countries.

What happened in the legal dispute
- 13 February 2025: Sheinbaum said Mexico was considering a civil lawsuit if Google kept the label. Official transcript
- 17 February 2025: Sheinbaum said Mexico would wait for Google’s response and again argued that the U.S. decree concerned the U.S. continental shelf. Reporting on her statement
- Early March 2025: A first civil filing was reported dismissed by Mexico City’s Tenth District Civil Court for lack of jurisdiction. Reporting on the dismissal
- 27 March 2025, as reported: El País reported a later civil action filed by Mexico’s executive legal office in the Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City against Google Operaciones de México and Google LLC. The action sought correction of the label and related relief. El País report
The procedural distinction matters: the dismissal of the first filing does not, by itself, establish the outcome of the later action. The available reporting does not establish a final decision on the merits, an appeal disposition, or a binding order requiring a worldwide name change.
Did Mexico win its case against Google?
A final win is not established by the available reporting. The first reported filing was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction, and a later filing was reported in March 2025. No final merits judgment or appeal outcome is established here. That means the reported court steps do not support saying that Mexico won, lost the later case, or secured a worldwide naming order.
