None is established by the available evidence as a universal, drop-in Nvidia replacement. The practical choice depends on whether you are training, fine-tuning or serving models; which frameworks, operators and precision modes you need; what systems you can procure; and how much migration work your team can absorb.
Huawei has the most completely documented domestic stack in the available evidence. Its claims about open-source support and developer adoption show ecosystem expansion, but they are vendor-reported rather than independent performance results. Other suppliers appear on reported Chinese procurement certification lists, yet certification does not prove retail availability, benchmark parity or suitability for your workload.

The main Chinese alternatives at a glance
The alternatives fall into two categories: a relatively complete accelerator-and-software platform, and individual processor families that may require more system-integration and software validation. The table summarizes what is documented, not a performance ranking.

| Huawei Ascend with CANN and Atlas | Processors, compiler and tools, Atlas server infrastructure, support claims for more than 90 open-source projects, and vendor-reported native pretraining of more than 40 models. | No independent, normalized comparison with Nvidia for a fixed model, precision, batch size, software release and system configuration. |
| Alibaba T-Head Zhenwu M530/M890 | Specified processors were included in a reported May 2026 Chinese procurement certification list. | The evidence does not establish broad availability, framework coverage, or workload performance. |
| Biren | Products were included in the same reported procurement certification list. | Detailed current software, system and benchmark information is not provided. |
| Hygon | Products were included in the reported certification list. | Detailed current software, system and benchmark information is not provided. |
| Iluvatar CoreX | Products were included in the reported certification list. | Detailed current software, system and benchmark information is not provided. |

| Moore Threads | Products were included in the reported certification list. | Detailed current software, system and benchmark information is not provided. |
“Included in a certification list” is a procurement fact, not a recommendation. It may help an eligible institution buy a specified processor through a covered channel, but it does not tell an independent developer that the same product is stocked, supported in its preferred cloud or compatible with a particular model.

Why Huawei Ascend is the most complete documented option
Hardware, software and systems are presented together
Huawei positions Ascend as more than a chip. CANN provides the software and compiler layer, while Atlas supplies server and cluster systems built around Ascend processors. That integrated approach matters because replacing a GPU involves the complete path from model code and kernels through collective communication, memory capacity, host systems and production serving.
In September 2026, Huawei said Ascend supported more than 90 open-source projects, including PyTorch, Triton, vLLM and veRL. Huawei also said more than 40 models had been pretrained natively on Ascend and CANN, and that CANN had more than 5,200 monthly active developers. These numbers indicate an expanding ecosystem, but they are vendor-reported ecosystem measures. They do not demonstrate that every listed project, operator or release behaves like its Nvidia-oriented implementation.
Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD is a system-level choice
Huawei said it launched the Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD in March 2025 with up to 384 Ascend 910C chips and compute of up to 300 PFLOPS. Those are vendor specifications for a configured system. They should not be read as a like-for-like performance result against an Nvidia server, because the evidence does not provide the model, numerical precision, workload, memory configuration, interconnect test or software version behind a comparable measurement.
What the ecosystem claims mean for a development team
Project names are useful only when translated into your own dependency list. A team using PyTorch should verify the exact supported release, accelerator backend, operators, automatic mixed precision behavior, custom extensions and distributed-training path. A team using Triton should verify whether its kernels compile unchanged or need rewriting. A team using vLLM or veRL should test the specific model, quantization mode, batching policy and scheduler rather than treating project support as proof of production readiness.
Can Huawei Ascend replace Nvidia for AI training?
There is no single yes-or-no answer. The evidence describes a changing platform and a dated warning about large-scale training, not a universal conclusion.

Historical training limitations
A July 2025 report from the Mercator Institute for China Studies said Huawei chips were especially unsuitable for large language model training runs at that time. The report also recounted a DeepSeek assessment that the then-current Ascend 910C was inadequate for training. This is important historical context, but it is not a benchmark of later hardware, later CANN releases or every training configuration.
What to test before committing to training
- Model size and sequence length: establish whether the model fits in available device memory and how much activation, optimizer and checkpoint memory is required.
- Precision: test the exact FP32, FP16, BF16 or quantized path your training recipe uses; support can differ by operator and release.
- Distributed communication: measure all-reduce, all-gather and pipeline or tensor-parallel synchronization on the target cluster, not on an isolated card.
- Operator coverage: identify unsupported or slow operations in attention, normalization, sparse layers, mixture-of-experts routing and custom CUDA extensions.
- Checkpoint and recovery behavior: verify that jobs can save, resume and fail over without unacceptable conversion or downtime.
For small fine-tuning jobs, the migration decision may be easier than for a frontier-scale pretraining run. A model that trains acceptably on a single server can still become inefficient when distributed across many nodes. Treat training and inference as separate evaluations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Inference and serving are a different decision
Inference often has different constraints from training: predictable latency, high utilization across many requests, memory for weights and key-value caches, batching efficiency, quantization and operational stability. A chip that is a poor fit for a large pretraining run may still be useful for an online or batch-serving fleet if its software path supports the model and target throughput.
Check the serving stack end to end
- Pin the model and serving version. Record the model revision, tokenizer, framework release, CANN or other accelerator software release and serving engine version.
- Run a correctness test. Compare logits or generated outputs on a representative prompt set, including long context, tool calls and structured output if your service uses them.
- Measure the production metric. Capture time to first token, inter-token latency, requests per second, queueing behavior and tail latency at the intended concurrency.
- Test memory pressure. Vary context length, batch size, quantization and concurrent sessions to expose out-of-memory failures.
- Exercise rolling operations. Confirm model loading, health checks, worker replacement, logging and rollback on the actual server image.
Huawei’s reported support for vLLM and other projects is a starting point for this process, not a substitute for testing your exact model. The same caution applies to any processor from the other domestic suppliers.
Other domestic processor suppliers
A May 2026 report said a Chinese procurement certification list included Huawei Ascend 310 and 910, Alibaba T-Head Zhenwu M530 and M890, and products from Biren, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX and Moore Threads. This establishes that specified processors appeared in a procurement framework. It does not establish open retail availability, cloud access, a particular board or server configuration, or support for PyTorch, Triton or vLLM.

How to evaluate a less-documented option
- Ask for the exact accelerator model, board memory, host platform, interconnect and supported operating-system image.
- Request the current software-development kit, compiler, runtime, profiler, debugger and collective-communication library versions.
- Obtain an operator- and-model-compatibility matrix for your framework release, not a general product brochure.
- Clarify whether support is provided directly by the vendor, a system integrator or the procurement channel.
- Confirm replacement hardware, firmware updates and spare-part arrangements for the expected service life.
Without those details, a processor can be technically interesting but commercially unusable for a production team.
A practical comparison framework
Use the following five axes whenever you compare Ascend or another domestic processor with an existing Nvidia deployment.
1. Workload
Classify the project as pretraining, continued pretraining, fine-tuning, batch inference or online serving. Record model size, sequence length, batch shape, latency target and daily request volume. Evidence from an inference deployment cannot be carried over to training, and a small fine-tune does not prove large-scale pretraining readiness.
2. Software coverage
Map every dependency: framework, operators, custom kernels, precision modes, tokenizer and data pipeline, compiler, communication library, checkpoint format and serving engine. For Huawei, vendor support claims include PyTorch, Triton, vLLM and veRL, but the relevant question is whether your versions and features work. Require a reproducible test on the target release.
3. System and scaling
Compare device memory, memory bandwidth, host CPUs, storage, network fabric, topology, node count and cooling. Ask how the workload is partitioned and whether communication becomes the bottleneck. A system-level claim such as the Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD specification cannot be reduced to a single-chip comparison.

4. Migration burden
Estimate code changes, kernel rewrites, numerical debugging, profiling, deployment automation and retraining of operations staff. A 2025 congressional witness statement raised concerns about CANN compatibility at that time. Huawei’s later ecosystem claims show that the stack is evolving, so neither the historical concern nor the newer vendor counts should settle your decision without testing the exact current release.
5. Access and procurement
Verify that your organization can actually obtain the chosen board or system through its intended channel. Procurement certification may apply only to named processors and covered institutions. Confirm lead time, export or import constraints relevant to your location, service coverage, spare capacity and software licensing before budgeting a migration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step migration plan
Step 1: Freeze a reproducible baseline
Record the current model commit, dataset slice, framework and driver versions, numerical precision, batch size, throughput, latency, memory use, convergence behavior and error rates. Save representative inputs and expected outputs. Without this baseline, you cannot tell whether a port is correct or merely different.
Step 2: Select a small but representative pilot
Choose a model and workload that exercise the operators and communication patterns used in production. Include a short training or fine-tuning run if training matters, and a serving test if inference matters. Do not select only a trivial model that avoids the difficult parts of your stack.
Step 3: Port the software layer
Install the vendor-supported operating-system image, runtime, compiler and framework integration. Replace device-specific extensions, then compile and run unit tests. Track every change in a compatibility log, including unsupported operators, precision substitutions and altered defaults.
Best Value
Step 4: Validate numerical behavior
Compare loss curves, evaluation scores and generated outputs against the baseline. Small floating-point differences can be normal; unexplained divergence, NaNs or degraded quality require investigation before performance tuning.
Step 5: Scale gradually
Measure one device, one node and the intended multi-node topology separately. Record scaling efficiency, communication time, memory fragmentation and recovery from a failed worker. A system that looks adequate on one accelerator may not meet the target when distributed.
Step 6: Run an operational trial
Test image builds, model rollout, monitoring, alerts, checkpoint storage, security updates and rollback. Include the people who will operate the service, not only the researchers who performed the port.

Model–chip co-design is becoming part of the strategy
The Asia Society’s Center for China Analysis describes model-chip co-design as a response to export controls. In January 2026, Z.ai announced that GLM-Image had been trained on Huawei Ascend Atlas servers and MindSpore. This is evidence of a reported training deployment on that stack, not proof that the same model, software or performance is generally available to every developer.
Co-design can reduce dependence on unsupported operators by shaping architectures, kernels and serving paths around the hardware. The trade-off is portability: optimizations that work well on one domestic stack may increase the effort required to move the model elsewhere. Teams should keep hardware-specific code isolated behind well-tested interfaces and preserve a portable reference implementation where feasible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling any domestic chip a drop-in replacement: replace the label with a tested compatibility statement tied to a model, software release and configuration.
- Using ecosystem counts as speed results: project support and developer totals show adoption signals, not tokens per second or training time.
- Generalizing from a dated report: the July 2025 training assessment describes conditions at that time; retest later hardware and software.
- Confusing certification with availability: confirm that your organization can buy, install and support the exact certified product.
- Testing only happy paths: include long context, failed workers, out-of-memory conditions, quantization and rollback.
Which option fits which situation?
| Situation | Most defensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need the broadest documented domestic software stack. | Huawei Ascend with CANN and Atlas. | It is the only option in this evidence set documented with processors, systems and named framework support. |
| You are evaluating a Chinese institutional procurement route. | Any processor on the applicable certification list, subject to channel verification. | Certification may open a covered procurement path, but does not settle technical fit. |
| You are serving a model and can run a focused pilot. | Ascend or another certified processor that passes your serving tests. | Inference suitability depends on latency, memory, batching and operator coverage for the exact model. |
| You are planning large-scale LLM pretraining. | No option should be selected from headline claims alone. | The evidence includes a dated warning about Ascend training and no normalized independent comparison. |
| You want to minimize migration effort. | The option with the closest verified framework, kernel and operations compatibility. | Brand or chip family names do not predict the amount of code and debugging work. |
Bottom line for Chinese AI developers
Huawei Ascend is the most fully documented Chinese alternative in this set because it combines processors, CANN, Atlas systems and stated support for major open-source projects. Huawei’s September 2026 figures—more than 90 projects, more than 40 natively pretrained models and more than 5,200 monthly active CANN developers—are useful ecosystem signals, not independent benchmarks. The Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD specification is likewise a vendor system claim.
Alibaba T-Head, Biren, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX and Moore Threads deserve evaluation where procurement access and vendor support are available, but the certification evidence alone cannot establish a universal replacement. Choose only after a workload-specific pilot covers software compatibility, numerical correctness, scaling, operations and the real procurement channel.
