Real estate agents report using AI most for everyday writing and communication: listing descriptions, social posts, and client follow-up. The tools can speed up drafts and summaries, but survey figures do not show that AI produces more leads, better valuations, or more closings. The useful test is whether a tool saves time or improves a client interaction without weakening fact-checking, privacy, or broker oversight.

What AI tools are real estate agents using?

In its September 2026 technology report, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) named these tools among agents who use AI: ChatGPT (91%), Gemini (42%), Copilot (27%), Claude (25%), and Apple Intelligence (14%). These are reported usage figures, not a ranking of quality or suitability. NAR’s report does not establish which assistant is best.

General-purpose assistants can help draft and summarize material. For a real estate business, compare them by task fit, how easily outputs can be checked, privacy and data-handling controls, approval by the brokerage, learning curve, and total cost. Also consider whether a tool works with the systems the brokerage already permits. NAR reported that 63% of surveyed agents identified the learning curve as a leading technology-adoption challenge and 59% identified cost. NAR’s 2026 technology report does not validate any particular vendor’s outputs.

What do agents use AI for most?

Among agents who use AI, NAR reported the following uses in September 2026. These percentages describe reported tasks, not accuracy, business results, or the share of all agents.

Reported use Share of agents who use AI
Writing listing descriptions 75%
Social media posting 56%
Creating emails and follow-ups 52%
Market summaries 30%
Marketing content with a personal tone 30%
Document review and summarizing 27%
Client education, such as FAQs and guides 26%
Pricing insights or comps support 23%
Role-play and objection handling 13%
Lead generation or prioritization 11%

NAR also reported that 41% of surveyed agents used AI-generated content among the technologies listed in the report. Separately, 81% said saving time was a reason for adopting technology, and 71% cited improving client experience. These are agents’ reported reasons and uses—not measured productivity gains or evidence that AI improves client satisfaction. NAR’s technology survey provides the underlying context.

Where AI fits in a real estate workflow

Listing descriptions and marketing copy

An assistant can turn verified property details into a first draft or adapt approved copy for a particular channel. Check every factual statement against the listing record, including features, dimensions, location details, and any claims about the property. Review tone and audience before publishing; a fluent draft is not proof that its facts or implications are correct.

Social posts, emails, and follow-up

AI can draft social content, personalize a follow-up, or help an agent prepare a response. Use it to reduce blank-page work, not to send unchecked messages. Confirm the recipient, context, promised next step, and any dates or figures before a message leaves the brokerage’s systems.

Market summaries, pricing support, and lead prioritization

Agents report using AI for market summaries, pricing insights, comps support, and lead prioritization, but these are less common uses in NAR’s survey than writing and communication. Treat generated summaries and suggestions as prompts for further analysis. Verify the underlying data and use professional judgment; the survey does not show that AI valuations or prioritization are accurate.

Document summaries and client education

A document summary can help an agent locate questions to review, and an assistant can draft an FAQ or guide in plain language. A summary is a reading aid—not authoritative legal interpretation or a substitute for qualified professional review. Do not let an AI-generated explanation replace the source document or the appropriate expert’s advice.

How to choose tools and test whether they help

Start with one repetitive task that has a clear baseline, rather than adopting a tool because it is marketed as transformative. Compare options on the factors that affect the real workflow:

  • Task coverage: Does the tool handle the specific drafting, summarizing, or follow-up task you need?
  • Integration and approval: Does it work with brokerage-approved systems and fit existing CRM processes?
  • Review and permissions: Can a person approve external messages and record changes before they happen?
  • Privacy and data handling: Is the tool approved for the information you intend to enter?
  • Ease and cost: Can agents learn it without adding friction, and is its total cost justified?
  • Measured value: In a small pilot, track time spent on the task, correction rate, response time, and client feedback.

The pilot measures are practical evaluation advice, not NAR findings. Keep the CRM as the source of truth for contact records; AI-generated notes or updates should not silently override verified information.

What adoption figures do—and do not—show

NAR’s 2026 report says 23% of surveyed agents use AI daily and 25% weekly; 31% experiment occasionally, 9% are curious but have not tried it, and 12% say they do not use AI and do not plan to. The report also notes that 32% had not yet tried AI in its 2025 report. That comparison should not be treated as a controlled longitudinal measure without confirming that the survey methods are comparable.

A separate NAR account of a February 2026 survey of 225 NAR-member agents reported that 68% said they saved at least one hour per week using AI, while 63% cited output accuracy as their top concern. Those responses come from a small association-member survey and should not be generalized to all agents or interpreted as proof that AI caused time savings. NAR’s account of the agent survey describes the results.

Safeguards for client data, messages, and housing advertising

Keep people in control of consequential actions

NAR’s June 2026 broker guidance describes agentic AI systems that can draft and send messages, update CRM records, schedule follow-ups, or trigger workflows without human intervention. Brokers should set approved-tool policies and define permitted actions. In practice, keep human review before external messages, client-record changes, and transaction actions; limit system permissions to what the task requires; and use brokerage-approved tools for sensitive information. NAR’s broker guidance on AI discusses oversight for these systems.

Review generated copy and ad targeting for compliance

Housing-related advertising deserves careful review of both generated language and audience selection or ad delivery. HUD’s archived April 29, 2024 guidance discussed fair-housing concerns associated with automated targeting and delivery of digital housing ads. HUD’s current Fair Housing Act overview lists a notice withdrawing prior FHEO guidance documents, so the archived guidance should not be presented as current binding policy. Check current official materials and applicable law, and ask a broker or qualified counsel to assess compliance questions. HUD’s Fair Housing Act overview and the archived digital-advertising guidance provide the relevant context.

Do agents need an AI PC?

No dedicated AI computer is established as a prerequisite for the workflows agents report using. NAR has discussed AI PCs as an optional hardware category, but its material does not establish that agents need a particular model or that dedicated AI hardware improves these business outcomes. NAR’s discussion of AI PCs is best read as a hardware consideration, not a requirement.
