It does not make you anonymous or protect every connection. Whether to keep it on depends on the provider, your device settings, and whether you prefer uninterrupted protection or unrestricted fallback when the VPN fails.
What you gain by keeping a VPN connected
Less need to remember to turn it on
A connected VPN can provide continuity as you join mobile and Wi-Fi networks, rather than relying on you to enable it each time. Apple describes managed Always On VPN as removing that manual step, while Google says VPN by Google connects automatically on networks. Those are descriptions of particular platform features, not a guarantee that every VPN works the same way. Apple’s VPN security guide and Google’s Pixel VPN instructions explain their respective implementations.

Reduced exposure on public Wi-Fi
A VPN routes covered traffic through an encrypted tunnel, making it harder for other people on the local network to inspect that traffic. CISA recommends using an available VPN on public wireless networks in its wireless security guidance. This is a useful reason to keep a VPN on when traveling or using unfamiliar Wi-Fi, but it does not make the network or every app connection risk-free.

Your ordinary IP address is less visible to websites
For traffic sent through the VPN, websites generally see the VPN’s IP address rather than the device’s ordinary public IP address. Google says its VPN can prevent websites from using the device’s IP address to find its location. That is not anonymity: accounts, cookies, GPS, app permissions, and other data can still identify or locate you.

Is it safe to leave a VPN on all the time?
It can be reasonable if you trust the provider and understand what the service covers. A personal VPN changes who handles some of your traffic; it does not eliminate the need to trust someone. CISA’s Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance (December 2024) warns: “Personal VPNs simply shift residual risks from your internet service provider (ISP) to the VPN provider, often increasing the attack surface.” CISA also cautions that some free and commercial VPN providers have questionable security and privacy policies. Read the provider’s privacy and security information rather than treating the VPN label as proof of protection. CISA’s guidance distinguishes personal VPNs from VPN clients required by an organization.
What a VPN does not cover
A VPN may not route every connection from your device through its tunnel. The exclusions depend on the service and configuration. For example, Google lists tethering traffic, push notifications, Wi-Fi calling and certain other IMS services, work-profile app traffic, and some traffic routed directly over Wi-Fi or cellular as exceptions for VPN by Google. Those are Google-specific limitations; do not assume they apply to every VPN. See Google’s list of VPN by Google coverage and exceptions.

A VPN also does not replace other security measures. It does not prevent phishing, make a malicious download safe, or stop a website from recognizing you through your account or browser data.

What happens if the VPN disconnects?
It depends on whether the device is configured to fail closed or fall back to its ordinary internet connection. A fail-closed setting blocks traffic that would otherwise bypass the VPN, which can reduce exposure if the tunnel drops but may leave you without internet access. With fallback, connectivity may continue outside the VPN.

- Android: On a configured VPN, Android offers a “Block connections without VPN” setting. Android Enterprise documentation describes blocking non-VPN connections, with behavior affected by app allowlists or denylists. Android can also show a notification if an always-on VPN stops working. Android Help explains VPN settings; Android Enterprise documents managed VPN behavior.
- Managed Apple devices: Apple says supported managed Always On VPN configurations drop all IP traffic when the tunnels are down. This can prevent fallback, but it also means no IP connectivity until the tunnel is available. Apple’s deployment overview describes the managed configuration.
Does an always-on VPN drain battery, slow the internet, or use more data?
There is no universal battery-drain or speed-loss figure established for VPNs; the effect depends on the device, network, VPN service, and configuration. Google says anonymous VPN usage data may include battery impact, but does not provide a general numeric estimate on its VPN by Google information page.
Data use can increase for some services. Google Fi says its VPN increases data usage and may switch to cellular when Wi-Fi is unusable, so a download can continue over mobile data. This behavior is specific to that service, not a rule for every VPN. See Google Fi’s VPN explanation.

Always-on, on-demand, or per-app: which setup fits?

Apple documents on-demand, per-app, and always-on approaches for device deployment; availability and controls depend on management and configuration. Apple’s deployment overview explains the options. Android Enterprise also supports managed app allowlists and denylists. Android Enterprise’s VPN setup guidance describes those controls.
Why the always-on option may be missing
Android
Android’s system Always-on VPN setting applies to a configured VPN connection, but Android Help says it may not appear when the VPN was set up through an app. Android Enterprise describes always-on VPN on Android 7.0 and later, while device and configuration differences can still affect availability. Check the VPN connection’s settings in Android’s network settings; if the option is absent, consult the VPN app’s own settings or its support information. Apple devices
Apple’s documented Always On VPN is an organizational feature for supported devices that are managed and supervised through specified tools; it is not a general always-on switch on every personal iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Personal users may instead have an app-controlled connection or a provider-supported on-demand behavior. Apple’s security guide describes Always On VPN’s managed-device scope.
Personal VPN or employer-required VPN?
A personal VPN is a choice to route traffic through a service provider, so the provider’s practices matter. A work VPN is generally configured to provide organizational access and may route or filter traffic under company policy. Apple documents managed routing and filtering for Always On VPN, and Android Enterprise supports managed app rules. If your employer requires a VPN, follow its configuration and policy rather than replacing or changing it without authorization.
