What AI Coding Assistants Can and Cannot Do Reliably

AI coding assistants can draft, explain, test, and debug code, but their output is not dependable by default. Learn how to verify suggestions, assess benchmark claims, and use agents without surrendering code review.

AI coding assistants are useful for producing and explaining code, but their answers are proposals—not proof that a change is correct, secure, or ready to ship. They can help with bounded tasks such as drafting a function, answering a syntax question, or suggesting tests. More agent-like systems can plan and make changes across a project in controlled settings. The important limit is that plausible output can still miss requirements, break project conventions, or introduce security problems, so developers need to inspect and test the work.

Can you trust AI-generated code?

Not without checking it. “Reliable” depends on what you ask the assistant to do and what you mean by trust. A suggestion may be useful as a starting point while still needing correction before it belongs in a codebase. A fluent explanation or a clean-looking diff does not establish that the code meets the requirement, handles edge cases, fits the project, or is safe.

GitHub’s official guidance for Copilot Chat describes help with coding questions and code generation, but warns that suggestions can be incomplete or insecure. It advises users to review and test generated code thoroughly, especially for security-sensitive applications. That is a practical standard for AI-assisted development generally: treat output as a draft, and retain human responsibility for deciding whether a change is acceptable.

Reliability should be judged at the level of the actual change. A short, well-specified task with a clear way to check the result is easier to supervise than an open-ended request to “improve the application.” Even then, a passing test only shows that the tested behavior passed under those test conditions; it does not by itself establish that every requirement or risk has been covered.

What can coding assistants do well?

Assistants are most useful when they reduce the effort of a bounded development task and a person can verify the result. Depending on the tool and context provided, they can suggest code, answer questions about syntax or programming concepts, explain selected code, and help with tests, debugging, refactoring, or documentation. These are forms of assistance, not guarantees that the result is complete.

Task Useful role for an assistant What the developer still needs to check
Code completion or a small implementation Draft a likely implementation from the nearby code and request. Whether it satisfies the intended behavior, handles relevant edge cases, and follows local conventions.
Coding question or explanation Offer an explanation of syntax, a concept, or a selected piece of code. Whether the explanation applies to the language version, framework, and code actually in use.
Tests and debugging Suggest test cases, identify possible causes, or propose a fix. Whether the tests cover meaningful behavior and the fix addresses the cause rather than hiding a symptom.
Refactoring or documentation Propose a restructuring or draft comments and documentation. Whether behavior remains unchanged where intended and the wording accurately describes the implementation.

The value in each case is a faster route to a candidate answer, not a transfer of engineering judgment. Developers still need to provide enough context to make the request meaningful and to judge whether the response matches the project.

Can AI coding agents work on a whole codebase?

Some newer systems go beyond suggesting the next line or answering a question. They can use tools, plan a sequence of work, edit files, run tests, and attempt fixes. The International AI Safety Report: First Key Update, published in October 2025, describes this shift from simple assistants toward agents capable of working across relatively simple software projects under idealized conditions.

That qualification matters. A multi-step agent workflow demonstrates that a system can sometimes complete a task in a particular evaluation setup; it does not show that the system can reliably deliver production software across arbitrary repositories. Real projects have dependencies, implicit assumptions, project-specific conventions, and interactions among components. The A.S.E. repository-level security benchmark, published in Findings of ACL 2026 in July 2026, identifies repository-level complexity as a challenge even for models that can perform well on snippet-level tasks.

For a developer, “works on the codebase” should mean that the assistant has been given relevant context and that its proposed changes can be inspected—not that it understands the repository as an experienced maintainer does. Keep the work bounded, ask for a clear change, and inspect every modified file. If the system can execute commands or alter files, review what it ran and changed before accepting the result.

Why can a convincing answer still be wrong?

Generated code can look idiomatic and still fail the actual requirement. A request may leave important details unstated; the assistant may choose an assumption that does not match the product. A change can also work in isolation but conflict with project dependencies, interfaces, naming patterns, or behavior elsewhere in the repository. Suggestions may be incomplete, and they can reflect particular languages or styles more strongly than others, as GitHub’s responsible-use guidance notes.

Testing helps, but only to the extent that tests exercise the behavior that matters. A test suite may not cover an unusual input, a failure path, a compatibility constraint, or a security boundary. Passing tests are evidence about the cases they check, not a blanket certification of correctness. Code review adds another check by asking whether the change is understandable, maintainable, and appropriate to the surrounding system.

  • Requirements: Compare the implementation with the requested behavior, including what should happen on errors and unusual inputs.
  • Project fit: Check interfaces, dependencies, conventions, and assumptions in the surrounding code.
  • Change scope: Confirm that the diff contains only changes needed for the task and does not silently alter unrelated behavior.
  • Verification: Run relevant tests and inspect their coverage; add or revise tests when important behavior is not represented.

Are AI coding assistants safe for security-sensitive work?

They can help with security-related coding tasks, but they should not be treated as a security control or sole reviewer. The eu-LISA Technology Monitoring Report on Generative AI in Software Development, published 9 July 2026, addresses security alongside quality and productivity and calls for regular evaluation of assistants and sufficient resources to review AI-generated code. The A.S.E. paper’s repository-level findings likewise indicate that secure coding remains difficult for current models.

Security issues are especially costly because a flaw can be subtle, appear only in a particular context, or expose data or access beyond the code directly changed. Review security-sensitive output using the same secure-coding practices and review processes required for human-written code. Consider what data the code handles, how it validates input, what authority it exercises, and how failures are handled. Do not infer that a solution is secure because it compiles, passes ordinary tests, or was presented confidently.

GitHub Docs makes this point explicitly for Copilot Chat: “You should be careful when using Copilot Chat to generate code for security-sensitive applications and always review and test the generated code thoroughly.” The statement is official product guidance, not a claim that review will catch every defect. For high-impact changes, preserve independent human review and any established security checks rather than substituting an assistant’s assessment.

Do AI coding assistants make developers faster?

Sometimes, on some tasks. The International AI Safety Report 2026, published in February 2026, summarizes studies suggesting that developers using assistants complete certain tasks 20–30% faster on average. The wording is important: it refers to findings from some studies and certain tasks. It is not a universal productivity guarantee, nor does it establish that a team will ship software 20–30% sooner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Task speed is only one part of delivery. A suggested implementation may need revision, extra tests, or careful review; those steps consume time but are necessary to establish whether the change is suitable. An assistant can be useful when it reduces drafting or information-finding effort without making verification harder. The net value depends on the task, the developer’s familiarity with the code, and how much checking the output requires.

What do coding benchmarks tell you?

Benchmarks are useful evidence about performance on a defined set of tasks, under defined conditions. They are not direct measurements of how reliably an assistant will handle a particular team’s repository. The October 2025 International AI Safety Report: First Key Update reported that top models solved over 60% of SWE-bench Verified problems by its reporting period, compared with 40% in late 2024. The report characterizes the benchmark as covering small-to-medium real-world software engineering problems and warns that coding benchmarks can be affected by contamination.

Read that result as a dated benchmark outcome, not a forecast or project-specific success rate. Benchmark tasks, access to context, evaluation rules, and the systems being measured may differ from a reader’s day-to-day work. A benchmark result also does not establish maintainability, security, or correctness for an untested production change. Repository-level evaluation is more relevant to repository-level claims than snippet-level demonstrations, but no single score replaces review of the work you intend to ship.

How should you use an assistant without giving up control?

A disciplined workflow keeps the assistant in the role of a source of proposals. Make the request narrow enough to review, preserve a clear view of the diff, and make verification part of the task rather than an afterthought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the behavior. State what should change, what must remain unchanged, and any relevant constraints or edge cases. Include the language, framework, or files that matter when they are not obvious from the available context.
  2. Ask for a bounded change. Prefer one function, one bug, or one small feature over a vague request to redesign or improve a system. For multi-step work, break it into reviewable pieces.
  3. Inspect the proposed changes. Read the diff file by file. Check that it matches the request, uses project conventions, avoids unnecessary edits, and does not introduce unexplained dependencies or behavior.
  4. Verify behavior. Run the relevant tests and other project checks. Examine failures rather than asking the assistant to keep trying until the output looks acceptable. Add tests for important behavior that is not already covered.
  5. Review risk and maintainability. Give extra scrutiny to code that handles sensitive data, authentication, permissions, external input, or other security-sensitive behavior. Use established human review and secure-coding practices.
  6. Accept only what you can explain. If you cannot tell what a change does or why it is correct, ask for a clearer explanation, reduce the scope, or reject the proposal. The person approving the change remains accountable for it.

This workflow reduces avoidable risk; it cannot guarantee that every defect will be caught. If an assistant’s output is difficult to verify, that is a reason to narrow the task or increase review—not to treat the output as trusted by default.

How can a team evaluate an assistant for its own work?

There is no universally most reliable assistant established by the evidence here, and model features and performance change quickly. A current tool comparison would need a fresh, directly comparable evaluation. Teams should therefore assess candidates against their own development conditions instead of treating a general benchmark or product claim as a ranking.

  • Match the task: Evaluate the kinds of work the team actually needs, from code explanation and completion to multi-file repository changes.
  • Use representative context: Include the project structure, conventions, languages, and constraints that shape real work, while following the organization’s rules for data access.
  • Measure review burden: Record not only whether a proposal works, but how much inspection, correction, testing, and security review it takes to decide whether it is acceptable.
  • Check evidence quality: Distinguish realistic repository tasks from narrow examples or benchmark results whose conditions do not match the team’s environment.
  • Re-evaluate over time: Regularly check whether the assistant remains useful and whether output quality or review needs have changed. The eu-LISA report specifically emphasizes regular evaluation and adequate resources for reviewing generated code.

A tool that is helpful for one language, task, or codebase may be less useful for another. The relevant question is not simply whether it can produce code, but whether it helps your team complete work while keeping changes understandable and verifiable.
