A farm apprenticeship or internship can involve hands-on work with crops, livestock, machinery, and day-to-day farm operations—but duties, training, pay, and hours depend on the farm and the country. Apprenticeships are usually structured employment-and-training programs; “internship” is a less consistent label, so applicants should check the written terms rather than assume what it means.
What work might you do on a farm?
Work depends on whether the operation raises livestock, grows crops, or combines both, as well as the season. Duties can include:

- Livestock: feeding animals, cleaning living areas, using milking equipment, observing animal welfare, and following biosecurity practices.
- Crops: pruning, irrigation, grass cutting, spraying, tree care, and harvest work.
- Farm operations: cleaning or maintaining machinery, repairing equipment, looking after buildings and infrastructure, and recording activities.
These are examples, not a standard checklist for every placement. England’s general farm worker apprenticeship standard, for example, has livestock and crop options and covers practical work, safe working, biosecurity, machinery or vehicle operation, and farm infrastructure. Its published details identify standard ST0937 version 1.3, updated 18 September 2026, with a typical 18 months before assessment and a minimum 348 compliance hours; these apply to that England-specific standard and may change. See the England standard.

How an apprenticeship is structured
In England, an apprenticeship combines paid employment and practical work with role-related training and study. Apprentices work alongside experienced staff and develop job-specific skills. In the standard model, at least 20% of normal working hours is allocated to training and study. England apprenticeship overview.
Training should be planned, not just assumed
England guidance describes off-the-job training as learning during working hours, agreed in a plan between the apprentice, employer, and training provider. It can include classes, online learning, practical training, mentoring, assignments, or projects. Routine duties and meetings alone do not count as off-the-job training. Ask how training time fits around farm work, who records progress, how often reviews happen, and what evidence or assessment is required. A busy farm schedule should not make the training plan unclear.

Apprenticeships are generally longer and more formally structured, with a training plan, supervision, occupational skills, and often a credential. U.S. Department of Labor guidance describes internships as often shorter and less structured, but says it has no official definition of “internship” or “externship”; its comparison is general guidance, not a universal legal test. Do not assume that an internship is automatically unpaid, brief, or unsupervised. The word on an advert does not by itself settle a worker’s legal status or compensation. In the United States, the Maryland Extension fact sheet advises farm employers to consider applicable federal and state law, but it dates to May 2016 and should not be treated as current legal authority. Applicants should check current rules for their location and review the written terms. Maryland Extension fact sheet.
Hours, seasons, and working conditions
Farm schedules follow the agricultural calendar. UK careers guidance notes that farm workers may work long hours during busy periods such as lambing and harvest. Actual hours vary with crop or livestock work, weather, staffing, and the employer’s shift pattern. UK farm worker careers guidance.

Before accepting a placement, ask whether it includes early starts, weekends, seasonal peaks, overtime, or time off in lieu. Confirm whether accommodation or transport is available and what it costs, if anything. Farm work can take place outdoors in all weather, and protective clothing may be required; the right clothing and safety equipment depend on the task and the farm’s rules. Ask for the host’s footwear and PPE specifications rather than assuming a particular kit is universal.
Pay, employment terms, and progression
In England, apprentices are employees. Official guidance describes entitlements including pay under applicable age and apprenticeship-stage rules, paid leave, a safe workplace, a written apprenticeship agreement, and planned training time. These are England-specific requirements; pay rates and rights should not be carried over to another country. England apprentice pay and holidays.

For internships, check the jurisdiction and actual arrangement rather than relying on the title. In the United States, consult current federal and state guidance for the specific case. The federal Department of Labor’s general comparison does not decide every placement’s legal status.
Experience may open routes into supervisory work, machinery or contracting roles, or assistant farm management. These are possible career directions, not guaranteed outcomes of completing an internship or apprenticeship; progression can also involve moving between farms. UK farm worker careers guidance.
How to compare two farm placements
Use the written offer and current local rules to compare like with like. A title alone will not tell you what the placement provides.
- Is it paid employment, and what pay, leave, and benefits are specified?
- Is there a written training plan or credential, and who provides the training?
- Who is the named supervisor, and how often will you receive instruction or feedback?
- Are the duties mainly crop work, livestock work, or a mixture?
- What are the normal and seasonal hours, including early starts, weekends, and overtime arrangements?
- Are accommodation or transport available, and what are the terms?
- What safety gear, training, or certifications are required?
- What progression or employment prospects are actually offered, rather than implied?
For context, the U.S. Department of Labor reported 4,688 registered apprentices served in U.S. agriculture in 2025, a 40% increase over the previous five years. Those figures refer to registered apprentices served, not all agricultural trainees or internships. U.S. agriculture apprenticeship figures.
