5G performance depends on two things that are easy to confuse: whether a usable radio signal reaches you (coverage) and how much network capacity is available when you use it. Distance from a mobile site, buildings and terrain, the spectrum band, your phone and plan, and network demand all affect the result. A 5G icon or coverage-map prediction is not a promise of a particular speed or consistently reliable service.
Coverage, speed, and reliability describe different things
Coverage is whether a mobile network’s radio service reaches a place well enough to connect. Speed is the data rate available at a particular time. Reliability is how consistently the connection remains usable, including whether it holds up as conditions or demand change. These outcomes are related, but one does not guarantee the others.

A location can be within a predicted coverage area yet have weak reception indoors, or it can receive a strong signal while sharing limited capacity with many users. Ofcom’s 2026 report Connectivity you can count on discusses both propagation and capacity constraints, including difficult radio conditions at cell edges and indoors. Its consumer mobile-coverage guidance also lists device, network, environment, and loading factors. These are useful general principles; the exact bands, rollout, and service available at an address depend on the country and operator.
How spectrum bands shape reach and capacity
5G uses licensed radio-frequency spectrum to carry data. Bands differ in how their signals travel and how networks can use them. The broad trade-off is that lower-frequency signals generally reach farther and are less vulnerable to obstacles, while higher-frequency spectrum can add capacity in suitable deployments but is more sensitive to blockage and environmental loss. This is a planning tendency, not a guarantee that one band or operator will perform a certain way at your home.

| Spectrum range | Common planning role | What can limit it |
|---|---|---|
| Lower bands | Wider-area coverage, including rural mass-market service | Available capacity and local network deployment still matter; coverage is not a speed guarantee. |
| Mid bands | A balance between reach and capacity | Signal conditions, buildings, demand, and the operator’s local use of spectrum affect the result. |
| Higher bands | High-capacity urban hotspots or in-building scenarios where deployed | More susceptible to blockage and environmental losses; actual reach depends on the location and design. |
This low-, mid-, and high-band framework comes from the ITU’s 2020 overview of global 5G terrestrial opportunities. It is not a universal band plan: national licensing, operator rollout, and handset support vary. The ITU’s 2018 5G backgrounder also notes propagation challenges above 24 GHz. Its discussion explains why a high-band deployment should not be assumed to cover the same area as a lower-band one.
Higher traffic and speed needs also require enough spectrum and efficient use of it, as the ITU explains. More spectrum can help a network serve demand, but it does not remove physical obstacles or ensure that capacity is available to every user at every moment.
Distance, terrain, and buildings weaken or block radio paths
Radio signal strength generally falls as distance from a mobile site increases. Hills, buildings, trees, and other environmental clutter can add losses or obstruct the path. A phone near a site with a relatively clear path may therefore receive a different signal from one farther away or behind several obstacles, even if both are in the same broad coverage zone.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s 2022 overview of millimeter-wave propagation illustrates why planners need location-aware models. Its Boulder work compared line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight measurements with two public prediction models; the measured losses generally did not agree well with predicted losses. That finding supports caution about treating a model or a single nominal range as a precise forecast for every street. It does not establish a universal 5G distance or a single amount of signal loss.
Indoor reception depends on the building and the signal geometry
Walls, windows, construction materials, furnishings, and the position of the phone relative to the serving signal can all affect indoor reception. A building may attenuate a signal enough to make indoor service substantially weaker than service just outside. Moving to a different room or nearer a window can change the radio path, although it cannot create capacity that the network does not have.
ITU-R Recommendation P.1238-13, dated September 2025, addresses indoor propagation from 300 MHz to 450 GHz. Its modeling considerations include building materials, furniture and furnishings, movement, antenna patterns, and transmitter and receiver siting. The recommendation’s wide frequency scope reinforces that indoor performance depends on more than the label “5G.”

For a large building with persistent indoor dead zones, mobile coverage may require a planned distribution system rather than a consumer device. ITU-T Recommendation K.158, approved July 29, 2025, covers protection, earthing, bonding, lightning, and safety for indoor distribution systems such as distributed antenna systems (DAS) and digital distribution systems (DDS). It is building-scale guidance, not a do-it-yourself installation manual; applicable national laws and regulations take precedence.
Network demand can change performance without changing coverage
Mobile networks have finite radio and backhaul resources in a given area. When many users are active, the capacity available to each can fall. Demand is often a relevant factor in busy places or at busy times; capacity can also be constrained where radio conditions are challenging, such as indoors or at a cell edge. A phone can show 5G while data feels slower or less consistent because coverage and available capacity are separate questions.
That is why performance can vary across times of day even when you are using the same handset, plan, and location. A weak or unstable radio path can also make a connection less dependable independently of how many people are online. An indoor booster is not established as a solution to congestion or to a place with no usable outdoor signal.

Your phone, plan, and local network all have a part
Ofcom’s mobile-coverage FAQ identifies the phone’s antenna quality and 5G capability, the customer’s plan, the availability of local airwaves, nearby site power and distance, and network loading among factors that can affect service. A phone’s 5G label alone does not establish that it supports the bands an operator uses at your location or that your plan includes the relevant service.
When checking compatibility, compare the handset’s supported 5G bands with the operator’s local deployment, and check the operator’s plan and service information. This is a practical check based on the device and spectrum factors Ofcom lists, not a claim that all phones, plans, or networks behave alike. If an operator’s tool does not make local band information clear, do not infer compatibility from a generic 5G badge.
Coverage maps are not speed guarantees
Coverage tools may show predictions, measurements, or both, and those displays answer different questions. Ofcom says its address-level coverage predictions and geographically aggregated performance scores use different methods. Performance scores appear across a zone only when enough measurements meet a statistical confidence threshold. A predicted signal at an address therefore should not be read as a forecast of the speed you will get there at a particular time.

When using a regulator or operator tool, check what is being shown: predicted availability, measured performance, or an aggregate score. Consider the geographic scale and the date or conditions of the information if the tool provides them. A result for a wider area may not describe a particular room, building, or moment, and a coverage prediction cannot account perfectly for every indoor obstacle or load condition.
How to diagnose poor 5G service
- Check the exact location. Look at current regulator or operator coverage information for the address or area. Read predicted coverage separately from measured performance where both are available; they are not interchangeable.
- Compare indoors and outdoors. Try the same phone near a window and outside the building. If service improves markedly outdoors, building materials or the indoor radio path may be a major factor. If it does not, investigate broader coverage, device compatibility, or network demand as well.
- Compare more than one time. If service is substantially worse at busy periods and better at quieter times, loading is a plausible contributor. If it remains poor across times and locations, congestion alone is less likely to explain the pattern.
- Check the phone and plan. Confirm 5G service is included in the plan and that the handset supports the operator’s local bands. The operator’s service information can help distinguish a device or plan limitation from local network conditions.
- Choose a remedy that matches the cause. An indoor mobile signal booster may be relevant only where usable outdoor signal exists and the device is compatible with the required bands. Check local rules and carrier requirements before buying; Ofcom describes the general approach of using outdoor signal to improve indoor coverage but does not validate a particular model or establish legal status across jurisdictions.
- Escalate persistent large-building problems appropriately. For a workplace or venue with continuing dead zones, consult a qualified mobile-infrastructure provider about professionally planned DAS or DDS. These systems require suitable design and attention to safety and applicable local requirements.
Weather and season: possible factors, not a universal explanation
Ofcom includes bad weather and season among possible influences on mobile performance, but its FAQ does not quantify their effect or establish that weather materially changes 5G service in every location. If performance changes during particular conditions, record when and where it happens, but do not assume weather is the cause without considering signal path, indoor conditions, and network loading.
