A 2015 laboratory study showed that a silicon-based chip could capture and distinguish two bacteria—Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus—in human blood samples prepared with those organisms. It was a proof of concept, not a validated test for patients or a device that detects pathogens generally.
What the silicon chip detected
Wang and colleagues reported a chip that distinguished E. coli from S. aureus in blood samples. Contemporary coverage specifies that the samples were spiked with one of the bacteria. The result therefore supports detection of those two named species under experimental conditions—not detection of every dangerous pathogen, nor evidence that the device identified infections in patients.

How the SERS chip worked
The researchers built the sensing surface on a silicon wafer decorated with silver nanoparticles, then attached 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA). According to the paper, they prepared the surface using chemical reduction assisted by hydrogen fluoride etching and linked 4-MPBA to silver through Ag–S bonds.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) amplifies Raman signals from molecules close to metal nanostructures. In this design, the modified silver surface was used to capture bacteria, while their spectral signals provided a basis for distinguishing the organisms. The authors presented capture, spectral detection and antibacterial action as functions combined on one chip; this was a laboratory materials-and-spectroscopy platform, not a conventional blood-culture test.

| Reported measure | Study result | What it means in context |
|---|---|---|
| Detection limit | 1.0 × 10² cells/mL | The lowest concentration reported for the experimental SERS chip; it is not a clinical sensitivity estimate. |
| Capture efficiency | Approximately 60% at 500–2000 CFU/mL | Capture under the stated experimental concentration range. |
| Relative standard deviation | Below 11% | A measure of variation reported for the study’s experiments. |
| Antibacterial rate | Approximately 97% | The authors’ reported antibacterial result for the chip, not evidence of treatment in a patient. |
These measurements do not establish clinical sensitivity or specificity, patient outcomes, or how the chip would perform across different infections and real-world samples.

The distinction is between demonstrating a signal in prepared blood samples and diagnosing infection in people. The 2015 work and its contemporaneous coverage do not establish a patient diagnostic trial, clinical approval, or a commercially available product. The report framed actual clinical samples from patients as a possible next step.

That gap matters because blood contains many substances that can interfere with a weak target signal. In the 2015 Chemistry World report, Imperial College London researcher Philip Howes described the challenge as “discriminating a needle in a haystack”—a low concentration of the target among abundant interfering molecules. Howes called application to actual clinical samples an interesting next step, not a completed validation. The contemporaneous report also quotes corresponding author Yao He on the motivation for faster detection.
How it differs from other silicon-chip pathogen research
Other research has used silicon microchips or related chip-based systems for different targets and sensing methods. These examples are not head-to-head alternatives to the 2015 SERS chip:

| Research | Method and target | Relationship to the 2015 chip |
|---|---|---|
| Wang and colleagues, 2015 | SERS spectral discrimination; E. coli and S. aureus | The chip discussed here; demonstrated with experimentally prepared blood samples. |
| 2021 work | Engineered-phage capture followed by multiplex real-time PCR; four bacterial targets | A separate capture-and-detection approach, not a later version of the SERS device. |
| 2022 work | Impedance measurement of red blood cells infected with Plasmodium falciparum | A different sensing method and target; it concerns malaria-infected cells, not the two bacteria in the SERS report. |
The different targets and methods prevent a meaningful performance ranking from these studies alone. The available reports do not provide a direct comparison of the platforms.
What the headline does—and does not—mean
The headline describes a real research result, but “dangerous pathogens” is broader than the evidence. The 2015 chip was reported to capture and discriminate two bacterial species in spiked human blood samples. The study does not show that it detects viruses, covers a broad pathogen panel, or can be used to diagnose patients at home or at the bedside.
