You can use live viewing and answer alerts without a subscription; reviewing recorded footage requires a compatible Ring plan.
How a Ring video doorbell works
The doorbell’s camera and motion detection monitor activity at your entryway. A visitor can press the button, or the camera can detect motion; the device then sends an alert through your Wi-Fi connection to a phone or tablet running the Ring app. From the app, you can open Live View and speak with the visitor using Two-Way Talk. Ring describes this as a way to see and talk to someone at the door even when you are away from home (Ring’s video doorbell guide).

The doorbell does not provide internet service. Setup and use depend on an existing home Wi-Fi network, a mobile device, and the Ring app. Ring says its devices work with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while some also support 5 GHz; its support guidance says Ring products do not work with a mobile hotspot and do not support Bluetooth (Ring Wi-Fi requirements).
Live video and recorded clips are different
Basic live use does not require a Ring subscription: you can view real-time video and answer doorbell notifications. To review recorded footage, you need a compatible subscription. Ring says cloud-stored motion-event videos can be kept for up to 180 days, but the available features and retention depend on the plan, device, account settings, and region (Ring support FAQ).

Ring’s guide describes recording triggered by detected motion or activation of Live View, rather than ordinary continuous 24/7 recording. Some features, including package alerts, may depend on the model, subscription, and region. Check the terms for the specific device and account rather than assuming every doorbell records or stores footage in the same way (Ring’s video doorbell guide).
Power and installation vary by model
Ring offers battery-powered and hardwired doorbells, and their installation needs are not interchangeable. Some battery models can also connect to existing wiring; for example, Ring’s European Battery Video Doorbell page describes a rechargeable built-in battery, hardwiring for continuous charging, and an optional solar charger. Those options are specific to that product and should not be assumed for every model (Ring UK Battery Video Doorbell).

Weather resistance and practical limits
Ring describes its video doorbells as water-resistant, not waterproof. They are designed to withstand conditions such as rain and snow, but not submersion or high-pressure water (Ring’s video doorbell guide). A Ring doorbell also depends on Wi-Fi for app-connected alerts and viewing, so its usefulness at a location depends on reliable network coverage there.
