A phone AI agent is an assistant that can take actions through supported apps, not just answer questions. It may use app-provided functions or interact with an app’s screen to complete several steps, but what it can do depends on the apps, phone, region, permissions, and safeguards available.
How is a phone agent different from a chatbot?
A chatbot primarily generates responses. An agent can also pursue a task by using available tools or app capabilities—for example, opening an app, choosing an item, and moving through the steps needed to place an order. The user still sets the goal, and the agent’s reach is limited by the actions and apps it is allowed to access.

Google describes Gemini’s Android feature as a way to “handle your multi-step tasks in select Android apps.” That wording matters: it is not a promise that Gemini, or any other phone agent, can operate every app or complete every request.
How can an agent take action in phone apps?
Two documented approaches help explain how this can work. They are different implementation patterns, not a universal design used by every phone agent.

App-provided functions
Android AppFunctions let an app expose defined data or actions that an AI agent or assistant can discover and invoke. The app describes its functions in a structured way, so an agent can match a request to an available capability rather than trying to operate every control on screen. Android says the documented AppFunctions execute locally on the device. Examples in Android developer materials include calendar, notes, and task integrations, as well as a Samsung Gallery example. Availability is selective and can depend on device previews and rollouts.
Screen automation
Google’s Gemini screen automation uses an on-device virtual phone environment to open and interact with app screens. It can carry out a multi-step task in the background, show progress, and, in supported cases, let the user stop the task or take control. The feature requires screen automation permission for each app. Because it operates through the interface, it is distinct from calling a defined app function.
These patterns can be contrasted simply: an app function provides a specific capability exposed by the app; screen automation works through the app’s visible interface. A phone may offer one, both, or neither for a given task.

What can a phone agent do in practice?
Google’s help page gives examples for Gemini on supported Android devices, including booking a ride, ordering food, and adding groceries to a cart. It lists additional shopping, travel, and ticket tasks for certain newer Samsung devices. Android developer materials describe app-function integrations for calendar, notes, and tasks, alongside the Samsung Gallery example.
Those examples are not a universal compatibility list. Support varies by feature, app, device, region, and rollout. The official sources do not establish one exhaustive eligibility matrix for every combination, so check the current feature-specific help page for your device and location rather than assuming any Android phone can perform these tasks.
What permissions and controls should you expect?
For Gemini screen automation, app access is controlled separately for each app. Google says users can choose to always allow access, ask each time, or disallow it. The available options and controls may differ across features and devices.

When the feature provides progress visibility or the option to stop or take over, use those controls to supervise the task. Permission allows an agent to act within a defined boundary; it does not guarantee that the agent will interpret the request correctly or make the intended choice.
What can go wrong?
Google warns that Gemini may misunderstand a request, tap the wrong control, order the wrong item, or report that a task is complete when it is not. Its guidance is to monitor tasks, particularly when an error would matter. Verify consequential details—such as the selected item, destination, time, and order status—before treating an action as complete.
Agents can also encounter prompt injection: malicious instructions embedded in a website, message, document, or other content they read. Such instructions may try to redirect an agent from the user’s goal. Google says its safeguards cannot prevent every risk, so close oversight is important for consequential tasks.

Generated explanations also need checking. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub cautions that “LLM experiences (Gemini Apps included) can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual.” An agent’s confident explanation is not proof that its information or action is correct.
What happens to information the agent can see?
Screen automation can take screenshots that include information visible in the app. Google’s Gemini privacy documentation says that, when Keep Activity is on, these screenshots may be reviewed by trained reviewers and used to improve Google services. Google also cautions users not to enter login or payment information into Gemini chats and advises against using screen automation for emergencies or tasks involving sensitive information.

Android describes local execution for the AppFunctions mechanism, but that does not establish the data handling of every agent or feature. For Gemini screen automation, consult the feature’s current privacy disclosures and settings before granting access.
How to decide whether to let an agent handle a task
- Check support: Confirm that the specific feature, app, device, and region are supported.
- Review access: Grant only the app permissions needed, and choose whether access should be allowed, requested each time, or disallowed where those choices are offered.
- Match the task to the risk: Use extra supervision for purchases, bookings, or other actions with real consequences; avoid screen automation for emergencies or sensitive information.
- Watch and verify: Follow progress when available, stop or take control if the task goes off course, and check the result in the app.
Why are phone agents being built into Android?
Android’s developer materials frame app functions and interface automation as ways for people to ask AI to carry out tasks rather than open apps and do each step themselves. Matthew McCullough, Android’s vice president of product management, described the direction this way: “Instead of opening apps to do tasks step-by-step, they’re asking AI to do the heavy lifting for them.” That is Google’s framing of a product and developer trend, not evidence of how widely people use phone agents.
