A 100 from an automated accessibility checker means the tested page passed the checks included in that scoring run. It does not prove that the site is accessible to everyone or that people with disabilities can complete its tasks. Lighthouse is one useful example, but its scoring rules should not be assumed to apply to every tool that displays a score.
What a Lighthouse score of 100 tells you
In Lighthouse, the accessibility score is a weighted average of the accessibility audits that count toward scoring. Each included audit passes or fails; a failed audit does not receive partial credit. Lighthouse bases audit weights on axe user-impact assessments. Manual audits and low-impact or best-practice audits do not contribute to the score. Chrome’s Lighthouse scoring documentation explains these mechanics.

So a 100 is useful evidence: the page passed the automated, score-affecting audits in that run. It is not an accessibility certification, a complete WCAG conformance result, or a guarantee of usability. These details are Lighthouse-specific; another checker may use different rules and a different way of combining results.
What a perfect automated score may not establish
Some accessibility questions need human judgment or testing with people using the site. W3C notes that some checks cannot be automated, tools can be inaccurate, and teams should not rely too heavily on tool output instead of users’ real-life experience. W3C’s overview of accessibility evaluation tools describes these limits.
#1 Best Overall
- Keyboard operation: Can someone move through the experience in a sensible order and operate the controls they need?
- Screen-reader understanding: Can a person using a screen reader understand names, states, changes, and the full task flow?
- Forms and recovery: Do labels and instructions make sense in context, and can users identify and recover from errors?
- Meaning and context: Do the content, instructions, and alternatives communicate what users need, rather than merely exist as markup?
- Real journeys: Does the site work for people across the relevant pages, interactions, and states—not only in the particular page state that was scanned?
These are areas to investigate, not a claim that every item is missed by every checker. A score alone does not establish whether a particular tool examined them adequately.
How to follow up on the score
- Identify the result’s scope. Record which checker produced it, which page and state were scanned, and which findings or audits were included.
- Review the tool’s findings. A total score can hide which checks were passed, failed, or left for manual review.
- Manually try core interactions. Check the keyboard, forms, changing content, and other tasks users must complete. Include the pages and states that matter, not just the page that produced the score.
- Involve users where possible. Real use can reveal barriers that an automated result cannot settle. For consequential journeys, or when the team lacks accessibility expertise, consider a professional accessibility evaluation.
What the number cannot settle by itself
A 100 does not by itself show that an entire site conforms to a particular WCAG version or satisfies a legal requirement. Those conclusions depend on the applicable standard and jurisdiction, which pages and states were evaluated, and the evaluation method. The score is one piece of evidence about one run—not a site-wide verdict.
