Office Home & Business 2024 includes those apps plus Outlook. Neither is a Microsoft 365 subscription: the license does not include Microsoft 365 services or free upgrades to a future major Office release.
Which apps are included?
Microsoft’s consumer Office 2024 perpetual-purchase editions for Mac differ mainly in whether they include Outlook and in their stated use category.

| Edition | Mac apps included | Stated use | Devices covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote | Home or school | One PC or Mac |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook | Home or work | One PC or Mac |
Microsoft identifies Access as PC-only, so do not expect it as part of either Mac edition. See Microsoft’s Office 2024 product FAQ for its current edition descriptions.
What does “one-time purchase” mean?
You pay once for the license rather than paying a recurring Microsoft 365 subscription fee. The license covers one PC or Mac, not multiple devices or users. It includes classic desktop app versions and security updates, but not feature upgrades to later major releases. Microsoft says there is no upgrade option: moving to a future major Office release requires a separate purchase. Check Microsoft’s explanation of Office 2024 versus Microsoft 365 for the distinction.

What is not included compared with Microsoft 365?
The perpetual suite does not include Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, or SharePoint Online. It also lacks some cloud-backed features, including PowerPoint Designer and Excel Data Types, identified by Microsoft as unavailable in one-time Office suites. Microsoft 365 subscriptions provide the latest app versions and ongoing feature updates, with services depending on the particular plan; do not assume every plan includes every service.
That makes the choice less about whether the core Office apps exist and more about how you use them: a single Mac and stable classic apps may suit a one-time license, while cloud services, multiple covered devices or users, or continuing feature upgrades may point toward a subscription. Compare the exact Microsoft 365 plan terms if any of those features matter.

Because the supported macOS window moves forward as Apple releases new versions, check Microsoft’s current Mac system requirements before buying.

Which Office apps should Mac buyers install?
Use Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft for a perpetual license. Microsoft says one-time Office licenses are not compatible with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint downloaded from the Mac App Store; those App Store versions require a Microsoft 365 subscription for document creation and editing. Installing the App Store versions can therefore lead to a subscription prompt even when you have purchased Office 2024.
For exact purchase and app details, consult Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ and Mac requirements information; offerings and requirements can change.
