Stitching happens as part of building the sphere, while reframing is an editorial choice made afterward.
How stitching turns separate lens views into a panorama
A 360 camera captures overlapping views around the camera body. Stitching software aligns those views and blends them into a continuous panorama. In Insta360 Pro workflows, the camera records original files from individual lenses for post-stitching; the manufacturer’s optical-flow explainer describes comparing image content across lenses and, for video, comparing adjacent frames from the same lens to adapt the seam to the scene. That description applies to the documented workflow, not necessarily to every 360 camera.

The output can remain panoramic for an immersive viewing workflow, or serve as source footage for a flat edit. A camera maker may specify that a particular input resolution can produce a larger stitched panorama: Insta360’s Pro manual, for example, says 3840 × 2160 source resolution can stitch up to 8K panoramic video in its specific workflow. That is a model- and software-specific capability, not a general guarantee for 360 cameras.

Why seams, ghosting, and distortion happen
The software must reconcile views captured from lenses in different positions. Nearby objects can appear in different places from one lens to the next, a geometric mismatch known as parallax. Depth differences and subject movement across a lens boundary can therefore leave a visible seam, duplicated or ghosted details, or warped shapes. A high nominal capture resolution does not by itself ensure a clean stitch.

Camera placement and scene geometry affect the result. Keep important subjects away from lens boundaries when practical, particularly when they are close to the camera; inspect the stitched footage rather than assuming the software has hidden every seam. These are general implications of the alignment problem, not guarantees that any particular placement will eliminate artifacts.
Stitching methods trade adaptability against speed
Insta360’s Pro and Pro 2 Stitcher documentation describes optical-flow and template-based stitching. These names and tradeoffs refer to the documented software, not universal settings or performance claims.

| Method or control | Documented behavior | Practical tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Optical flow | The Pro workflow compares image content across lenses; its video explanation also describes comparing adjacent frames from the same lens. | More scene-adaptive seam alignment can take longer to process. |
| New Optical Flow | The Pro 2 manual describes it as nearly 3 times the speed of basic optical flow in that Stitcher workflow and warns that some scenes may stitch less effectively. | Faster processing may come with a less satisfactory result in some scenes; the stated speed comparison is not an industry-wide benchmark. |
| Template-based stitching | The Pro 2 manual calls a scene-specific template the fastest option, but says it has limited effect with parallax error and nearby subjects. | Speed is useful when the scene suits the template, but it is less able to adapt to difficult geometry. |
| Stitching angle or range | The manual says a larger optical-flow stitching angle takes longer and can improve the stitching effect and stitching distance. Increasing template stitching range can smooth the seam but may cause ghosting. | Changing the range can improve a seam or processing result, but may increase processing time or introduce artifacts. |
For Pro 2 Stitcher, try the available method that suits the scene, then review the result at the boundaries. A setting that improves one scene may not help another, especially where close subjects or parallax are involved.

Reframing selects a view from the already-recorded 360 sphere. It determines which direction the viewer sees, the perspective and field of view, and how the view changes during the clip. The editor can export that selection as a conventional flat video; the rest of the spherical capture is not visible in that output.

In Insta360’s documented mobile app and Studio workflow, a keyframe sets the view at a point on the timeline, and the software interpolates between keyframes. Set a sequence of views to guide attention through the clip, and adjust field of view and perspective to control how wide or distorted the flat image appears. These controls illustrate one manufacturer’s software and are not universal interface directions.
Choose the workflow for the deliverable
- For an immersive 360 result: stitch the lens views and retain the panoramic output so viewers can look around.
- For a conventional video: stitch the source, choose a view and field of view, set keyframes if the view should move, then export the flat clip.
- For a difficult scene: pay particular attention to nearby subjects and lens-boundary artifacts, and compare available stitching methods rather than assuming the fastest option will look best.
- For an editing workflow: check the camera’s file format, source-file requirements, software support, and the editor’s compatibility before choosing an app or plugin.
Insta360’s reframing guide documents keyframes in its mobile app and Studio. Its Premiere Pro plugin documentation describes a supported workflow that can import .insv footage directly and set stitching and stabilization options. It also exposes reframing controls for output resolution, projection model, field of view, camera angle, and distortion. The manual specifies Premiere Pro 2021 and later; verify current compatibility and the specific camera’s file format before relying on that path.

What to check before exporting
- Confirm the source files. Determine which original lens files and camera-specific formats the stitching workflow requires; retain them until stitching and export are complete.
- Stitch the panorama. Use software that supports the camera and its footage. Inspect seams, nearby subjects, and moving objects rather than judging only the nominal resolution.
- Set the intended view. Choose the direction, projection or perspective, and field of view for the audience and format.
- Animate only when needed. Place keyframes where the view should change, then preview the motion between them so the reframe follows the subject without distracting jumps.
- Export and review the flat clip. Check the framing, distortion, and seam visibility in the exported result, since the flat output shows only the selected portion of the sphere.
Why camera and software details matter
360 cameras and editors do not necessarily share file formats, stitching controls, or compatibility. The cited Insta360 documents describe that manufacturer’s workflows; they do not establish that other cameras use the same algorithms or offer the same settings. Before choosing an editor, verify support for the camera generation, source format, plugin version, and required stitching stage. Processing time also depends on the selected method and the computer handling the footage.
