A network adapter is the computer’s interface for connecting to a network. It may be built into the computer, installed as an internal card, or attached externally—so there is no single appearance to look for. Ethernet adapters provide a wired connection; Wi-Fi adapters connect wirelessly. The adapter’s hardware handles the network connection, while its driver lets the operating system use it.
What does a network adapter look like?
It depends on where the networking hardware is installed. Microsoft describes adapters that are built into a device, installed inside it, or connected through USB. Many laptops and desktops have networking hardware built in, so there may be no separate adapter visible from the outside. Microsoft’s network setup guidance describes these forms.

- Built-in adapter: Integrated into the computer. A laptop with built-in Wi-Fi, for example, may have no removable Wi-Fi device to see.
- Internal adapter card: A card installed inside a desktop, such as a PCIe Ethernet card with one or more network ports.
- External adapter: A separate device that plugs into a port such as USB. Some provide wired Ethernet; others add wireless capability.
In Windows, “network adapter” can also refer to a software network interface, not just a physical part. Microsoft notes that an interface is typically represented by a physical Network Interface Card (NIC), but may also be software-only, such as a loopback interface. Microsoft’s network-interface overview explains the distinction.

What does a network adapter do?
An adapter connects a computer to a network so it can communicate with other devices and services. A physical network interface handles the connection’s signals; in Windows, the NIC implements the physical layer, transceiver, and attached medium. A software device driver—called a miniport driver in Microsoft’s networking documentation—allows the operating system to control and use the hardware. Microsoft’s Windows network architecture overview describes the NIC and driver roles.

Ethernet and Wi-Fi: two different connection types
| Type | How it connects | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | Wired connection, typically through a cable plugged into an Ethernet port. | An Ethernet jack on the computer or adapter; internal and USB Ethernet adapters are available. |
| Wi-Fi | Wireless local-area network connection. | Built-in wireless hardware or a compatible wireless adapter. A computer with built-in wireless capability does not need a separate Wi-Fi adapter. |
Ethernet products vary in connector, port count, and supported speed. For example, Intel’s catalog lists its I226 family as supporting up to 2.5GbE, and includes I350 models with dual- or quad-port configurations and I210 products with RJ45 connectors. These are product specifications, not a guarantee of the speed a particular computer or network will achieve. Actual performance depends on the adapter and the rest of the connection. See Intel’s Ethernet adapter catalog for its listed product details.
How to check which adapters your computer recognizes
Use Device Manager
- Open Device Manager in Windows.
- Expand Network adapters to see the recognized adapter names.
- To check for wireless hardware, look for “wireless” in an adapter’s name, as Microsoft’s guidance suggests.
Windows labels and screens can vary by version. A missing Wi-Fi option does not by itself establish that the computer has no Wi-Fi hardware: it may lack a wireless adapter, or its driver may not be recognized or installed correctly. Check the computer or adapter manufacturer’s support information for model-specific troubleshooting.

What to check before buying an adapter
First decide whether you need wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or an additional network interface. Then match the adapter to the computer and the network it will connect to.
- Form factor and connection: Check whether the computer has a compatible internal expansion slot or whether a USB adapter is the practical option.
- Connection type: Choose Ethernet for a wired connection or Wi-Fi if you need wireless networking.
- Operating-system and driver support: Confirm that the adapter supports your operating system and that an appropriate driver is available.
- Connector and port count: For Ethernet, check the connector type—such as RJ45—and how many ports you need.
- Speed requirements: Compare the adapter’s supported speeds with the computer, cable, network equipment, and internet or local-network service. A faster adapter alone cannot make the rest of the connection faster.
A PCIe Ethernet network adapter or internal Ethernet card is an option for a desktop that has a compatible free expansion slot and supported drivers. A USB network adapter is an alternative when the computer has a compatible USB port. Neither form is a universal fit; confirm compatibility before purchasing.
