How a memory shortage can affect consoles
Memory and storage are components in a console, so scarcity can increase the cost of securing the parts needed for production. How much that affects the price paid by a buyer depends on more than the component cost: manufacturers’ supply contracts, margins, retail pricing decisions, and promotional plans all matter. A higher build cost may be reflected in a higher suggested retail price, fewer discounts, or reduced production; it does not automatically produce the same outcome for every model or manufacturer.

TrendForce projected that memory modules would account for 21–23% of total console hardware costs in 2026. That is an analyst forecast, not a measured final share. Xbox’s June 25, 2026 price update described its own cost trajectory: Xbox Wire said console storage and memory prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. That company statement is about Xbox’s reported component costs, not a universal index for memory prices across the industry.
Will a memory shortage make consoles more expensive?
It can contribute to price increases, and Xbox explicitly linked its announced console price changes to higher console storage and memory costs. Sony also announced a global PS5-family price increase effective April 2, 2026, but its announcement cited continuing global economic pressures; it did not attribute the increase solely to memory. These are separate company decisions, announced at different times and with different stated explanations.

What Sony announced for Brazil
Sony’s Brazil PlayStation Blog listed the following suggested retail prices in Brazil for the price change effective April 2, 2026. These are regional amounts, not global prices:

Those prices are Sony’s suggested retail prices for Brazil, not necessarily the price a retailer currently charges or the price available in another country. The cited Xbox update confirms price changes but does not establish specific revised prices here, so a like-for-like nominal price comparison between Xbox and PlayStation cannot be made from these announcements alone.

What buyers may notice
- Higher official prices: a manufacturer may raise a console’s suggested price when costs rise, as Xbox did in connection with storage and memory costs.
- Fewer discounts: a maker or retailer could reduce promotions rather than change the list price. The cited figures do not establish how often or how deeply discounts will change.
- Different outcomes by region and model: compare the same country, console edition, and date. A manufacturer’s suggested price is not the same as a retailer’s asking price.
Could the shortage make consoles harder to find?
Yes, component constraints can limit how many units a manufacturer can build, but the evidence does not mean every console model or country will be out of stock. Xbox said it was unable to make as many consoles as players wanted. Separately, TrendForce forecast a 4.4% year-over-year decline in global game-console shipments in 2026. That is a forecast, not a final shipment result or proof that memory alone would cause the decline.

Sony gave a different, time-bounded account of its supply position. In its May 2026 earnings-call transcript, the company said it had secured the memory volume necessary for PS5 production in calendar 2026, and expected memory prices to remain high into FY2027 under then-current conditions. Securing a planned volume does not guarantee that every retailer will have every PS5 model in stock; it describes Sony’s stated procurement position, not retail inventory in each market.

Will a shortage slow down a console you already own?
No reviewed evidence establishes that memory scarcity reduces the performance of consoles already in people’s homes. A supply shortage primarily affects the cost and availability of components used to make hardware. It is distinct from the memory configuration built into a particular console.
Sony’s PS5 Pro product announcement describes faster memory and an improved GPU as parts of that model’s hardware and performance package. That is a design specification, not evidence that a shortage makes existing PS5s or other consoles perform worse.
Does this mean the next console launch will be delayed?
There is no confirmed next-generation launch date in the cited statements. In May 2026, Sony said it had not decided the timing or price of its next console. That uncertainty is not a confirmation of a delay, and the statement does not establish a launch window. Sony’s PS5 memory coverage for calendar 2026 concerns the current generation and should not be read as a promise about next-generation timing or supply.

How to check a console’s price and availability
- Match the market and date. Check the price in your country and when it applies; do not compare a Brazil price with a price from another market as if they were equivalent.
- Match the exact model and edition. Standard, digital, and Pro versions can have different suggested prices and stock.
- Separate suggested price from the offer. Compare the manufacturer’s recommended price with the retailer’s current asking price, delivery estimate, and stock status.
- Distinguish announcements from forecasts. A company’s price or supply statement describes what that company announced; an analyst shipment projection is an estimate, not a guarantee of local stockouts.
