A Kansas State Park Vehicle Permit covers vehicle entrance to Kansas state parks—not camping, a campsite reservation, a cabin, or utility hookups. The permit is required for each motorized vehicle entering a park, and an overnight stay also requires a separate Camping Permit. KDWP’s fee page, checked October 4, 2026, lists regular annual and daily permits at $25 and $5, respectively; scheduled increases take effect November 1, 2026.
What does a Kansas state park vehicle permit cover?
It pays for a vehicle’s entrance to Kansas State Parks. The requirement is per entering vehicle, not per person in the vehicle. A valid State Park Vehicle Permit is required at all Kansas State Parks, and regulations require a current motor vehicle permit for each motorized vehicle entering a park. Vehicles generally must remain on maintained roads and in parking areas unless otherwise posted. KDWP’s fee and permit information and park regulations describe these requirements.

Annual permit
A regular annual vehicle permit allows unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas State Parks during the calendar year for which it is purchased. It is statewide, but its coverage is for park entrance—not overnight accommodations or other separately charged services.
Daily permit
A daily vehicle permit covers one day at the specific park where it is purchased; it is not a multi-day statewide pass. KDWP says it is available from that park’s office.

Kansas State Parks Passport
The Passport is purchased through the Kansas vehicle registration or renewal process, including the registration channels described by KDWP. It attaches to that vehicle, covers park entry until the vehicle registration expires, and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. KDWP lists a duplicate permit for $2.50 if a windshield is replaced.
Does the vehicle permit cover camping or a campsite?
No. An overnight stay requires a separate Camping Permit in addition to the State Park Vehicle Permit. A campsite reservation and its associated fees cover the campsite; they do not replace the vehicle permit. KDWP’s reservation guidance says vehicle permits are sold separately.

Which permit should you choose?
- One park, one day: The daily permit is the option for one day at the park where it is purchased.
- Multiple visits or parks in the calendar year: The annual permit covers unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas State Parks for that calendar year.
- Registering or renewing a Kansas vehicle: Check whether the Passport suits your vehicle and registration period; it is tied to that vehicle and ends with its registration.
- Eligible resident seeking a reduced rate: KDWP lists senior/disabled rates subject to its plate or placard conditions. The Passport itself has no senior or disability discount; verify eligibility and current terms on the fee page.
- Bringing a UTV or golf cart: KDWP lists a special permit for these vehicles, which are restricted to improved roads and parking areas. Ask the specific park office about applicable instructions.
Are there free-entry days or exceptions?
KDWP announced free park entrance for April 22, 2026, while noting that camping fees still applied. That was a dated free-entry day, not evidence of a standing exemption; check KDWP announcements for any future dates. KDWP’s announcement gives the details for that event.
