A floating-point unit (FPU) is processor hardware that stores and performs operations on floating-point numbers. The exact meaning of “FPU” depends on the processor architecture: one unit may support only single-precision instructions, while another supports both single and double precision, and some systems omit or disable an FPU altogether.
What does an FPU do?
An FPU executes arithmetic and related instructions on numbers represented in floating-point formats. Depending on the processor, its operations can include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fused multiply-add, comparisons, and conversions. It uses floating-point registers to hold values during processing.

Oracle’s SPARC architecture glossary defines an FPU as “a processing unit that contains the floating-point registers and performs floating-point operations, as defined by this specification.” Oracle also cautions that the definition is architecture-dependent and may differ across processor architectures. What is a floating-point number?
Floating-point represents numbers using components commonly described as a sign, an exponent, and a fractional significand (sometimes called a mantissa). This representation allows a format to express values across a range of magnitudes, with finite precision. An FPU operates on the formats and instructions supported by its processor; the name alone does not specify which formats are available.

For the dsPIC33A context, Microchip identifies single precision as 32-bit and double precision as 64-bit. Those widths are common IEEE 754 formats, but processor documentation is the authority for a particular implementation’s supported formats and behavior. Microchip dsPIC33A FPU overview.
Why do FPU capabilities vary?
“FPU” describes a role, not one universal design. Precision, instruction set, supported operations, standard behavior, and even whether the unit exists are architecture- and implementation-specific. Three vendor examples illustrate the differences:

| Processor context | Precision and operations | Standards and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Nios V | The Nios V FPU implements single-precision floating-point instructions based on the RISC-V F extension and supports fused multiply-add. Nios V/g uses software emulation for double-precision operations. | The reference manual describes IEEE 754-2008 behavior with qualifications, including simplified rounding and subnormal support limited to a subset of operations. |
| Microchip dsPIC33A | Hardware implements common single-precision (32-bit) and double-precision (64-bit) operations. Microchip says the unit is intended to accelerate C compiler floating-point operations compared with software-library equivalents; this is not an independent performance benchmark. | Designed for IEEE 754-2008/2019 compliance, with additional non-IEEE-compliant features that may be enabled. |
| Infineon TriCore | The documented FPU supports single-precision add, subtract, multiply, multiply-accumulate, divide, conversions, and comparisons. | Optional: it need not be present in every system using the core and can be disabled. |

No. An FPU may be integrated into or closely coupled with a processor, optional, absent, or disabled. Also, a processor can handle an operation without hardware support: Nios V/g, for example, emulates double-precision operations in software. Whether an application uses hardware or software execution therefore depends on the processor configuration and the operations it needs.

Does FPU mean full IEEE 754 support?
No. A vendor’s statement about IEEE 754 compliance must be read with its version and qualifications. The cited Nios V documentation describes exceptions involving rounding and subnormal support; Microchip describes a design intended to comply with IEEE 754-2008/2019 while also offering optional non-compliant features. Do not infer that all FPUs implement every standard feature identically.

How to check what a specific FPU supports
- Identify the exact processor and configuration. A core family may have variants, and an optional unit may be omitted or disabled in a particular system.
- Check the processor manual’s FPU or floating-point instruction section. Confirm supported precision, operations, registers, and any required extensions.
- Look for qualifications on standards behavior. Note the IEEE 754 version, rounding modes, subnormal handling, and whether any non-standard features are optional.
- Check how unsupported operations are handled. The manual or toolchain documentation may specify software emulation, as Intel does for double precision on Nios V/g.
