What a Five-Year Stock Return Does—and Doesn’t—Tell You About Risk

A five-year stock return records what happened between two dates, but it cannot show every interim loss or predict the next five years. Learn how to read the figure correctly and assess the risk behind it.

A five-year stock return tells you what happened between two dates. It does not tell you how severe the losses were along the way, whether dividends made up part of the gain, what you paid in costs and taxes, or whether the outcome is likely to repeat. A positive result after five years can coexist with a damaging interim decline, and a negative result can occur even after a long holding period.

To interpret the number, first identify whether it is cumulative or annualized, whether it includes dividends, and which exact dates and benchmark were used. Then examine the path, your ability to tolerate losses, and the role of the holding in a diversified portfolio.

What a five-year stock return actually measures

A five-year return is an endpoint calculation: it compares an investment’s value at the end of a specified five-year window with its value at the start. The result describes that particular window, not every five-year period and not every route between the two dates.

For example, if $100 becomes $150, the cumulative return is 50% before considering costs, taxes, or any cash flows. The annualized equivalent is about 8.45% per year, calculated as (150/100)^(1/5)-1. Those are two ways of expressing the same endpoints; they are not two separate gains.

Always record the start date, end date, share price or account value used, and whether dividends were reinvested. A five-year label without those details is incomplete.

Cumulative versus annualized return

A cumulative return states the total change over the entire holding period. An annualized return, sometimes called a compound annual growth rate, converts that multi-year result into a compounded per-year rate. Annualization makes periods of different lengths easier to compare, but it does not mean the investment earned that rate every calendar year.

A sequence such as +30%, −20%, +10%, −5%, and +15% will not have the same outcome as earning a smooth annual rate that averages those percentages. Compounding applies to the changing account value, so the order and size of gains and losses matter.

Price return versus total return

A price-only calculation uses changes in the share price. A total return adds dividends, normally assuming they are reinvested when the statistic is calculated. For a dividend-paying stock or index, omitting distributions can materially understate what an investor received.

When a fund document or website reports a five-year figure, look for the words “price return,” “total return,” “dividends reinvested,” or an equivalent definition. If the definition is not stated, treat the number as unsuitable for a precise comparison until it is clarified.

What the number can tell you about risk

It records one realized outcome

The return is useful evidence about how that investment performed in a defined environment. It can show whether the holding gained or lost value over the selected window and provide a starting point for comparing it with an appropriate alternative. It cannot establish the probability of a future gain, the safety of the security, or the risk of all possible five-year paths.

It can reveal dispersion between different windows

Rolling periods—every possible five-year span in a long history—show how sensitive an outcome is to the chosen start date. Two investments with the same “five-year return” label may have very different results because one window began near a market peak and another began after a crash.

It does not show the path

An endpoint does not reveal the largest interim loss, the time needed to recover, or the volatility experienced month by month. A portfolio could finish above its starting value after first falling by a large amount. That path may have forced an investor to sell, even though the final statistic looks positive. Conversely, a modestly negative endpoint could have involved a relatively stable decline rather than a sharp collapse.

To assess path risk, obtain a price or total-return series for the same investment and dates, then examine drawdowns, recovery time, and variability. Do not describe a specific drawdown or volatility figure unless it is calculated from that exact series or supplied by a reliable source.

What long-run five-year evidence shows—and what it cannot prove

A 2018 SEC-filed fund document presented all rolling one-, five-, ten-, and twenty-year S&P 500 periods from 1926 through 2017. For the five-year periods, it reported the following annualized total returns:

Statistic Annualized five-year total return Window in the filing How to read it
Average across rolling periods 10.1% 1926–2017 dataset Average historical result, not a forecast
Worst period −12.4% 1928–1932 A five-year annualized loss; the ending value was lower than the starting value
Best period 28.6% 1995–1999 A five-year annualized gain during an unusually strong window

The figures are historical S&P 500 index results in a U.S. filing, not a current market estimate and not the after-cost experience of an individual investor. The filing explicitly cautions that past S&P 500 performance should not be regarded as an indication of future performance of the U.S. stock market as a whole or of a particular fund. Its index figures also exclude the brokerage costs, fund expenses, taxes, and other frictions a real portfolio may incur.

The range—from a negative annualized result to a very high positive one—demonstrates why “five years” is not a guarantee of a positive outcome. It does not tell you what the next five-year window will produce.

Can you lose money after holding a stock for five years?

Yes. A five-year holding period limits neither the size nor the timing of losses. A company can suffer a permanent deterioration in earnings, face insolvency, or be displaced by competitors. Even a broad index can decline over a selected five-year window.

Holding longer may give a diversified portfolio more time to recover from a temporary decline, but recovery is not assured and the investor still needs cash at the right time. A person who must fund a tuition payment, home purchase, or emergency during a downturn may realize a loss regardless of the nominal holding period.

Why the endpoint can mislead

  • Entry-date effect: Buying just before a major decline can leave the account below its starting value years later.
  • Sequence of returns: Early losses followed by gains can produce a different balance from the same percentages in the opposite order.
  • Cash withdrawals: Selling shares during the period changes the amount that remains invested and can lock in losses.
  • Concentration: A single company or narrow sector can behave very differently from a broad market index.
  • Inflation: A nominal gain may represent little or no increase in purchasing power after inflation, which is not included in a basic price-return figure.

How to compare a five-year return with the S&P 500

A benchmark comparison is meaningful only when the dates, return convention, and investment exposure line up. The S&P 500 may be an appropriate reference for a diversified U.S. large-cap portfolio, but it is not automatically the right yardstick for a small-company fund, an international holding, a bond allocation, or a concentrated stock.

  1. Match the window. Write down the exact start and end dates. A “five-year” result ending on March 31 is not directly comparable with one ending on December 31 if market conditions differ.
  2. Match the return type. Compare cumulative with cumulative or annualized with annualized. Use total return for both sides when dividends are included for the investment.
  3. Identify the reference. Confirm that the benchmark represents a similar market, currency, and risk exposure. A benchmark comparison measures relative performance; it does not make either investment safe.
  4. Account for implementation. Note fund expense ratios, trading commissions, bid-ask spreads, advisory fees, and any cash that was not invested. An index level is not an investor’s net account return.
  5. Inspect the path. Compare maximum drawdown, recovery time, and volatility for the same dates when those figures are available from a dependable data series.
  6. Explain the difference. Attribute outperformance or underperformance to exposure, fees, dividends, concentration, or timing only when the data supports that explanation.
Question Investment result Benchmark result
Same start and end dates? Record both dates Use exactly the same dates
Cumulative or annualized? State the convention Use the matching convention
Dividends included? Price or total return Use the same treatment
Costs included? Gross or net of expenses Index figures commonly omit investor costs
Exposure match? Company, sector, country, and currency Choose a benchmark with comparable exposure

Costs, taxes, and the difference between index history and your account

A published index return is a standardized measurement. Your result can differ because of fund expenses, brokerage charges, spreads, advisory fees, cash balances, trading dates, and the price at which orders filled. The SEC-filed example specifically notes that its index returns exclude costs of buying and selling stocks and other expenses a real-world portfolio would incur.

Taxes are account- and investor-specific. Dividends and realized gains may be taxed differently depending on jurisdiction, account type, holding period, and personal circumstances. Because no universal tax rate applies, calculate an after-tax result separately rather than subtracting a generic percentage from a headline return.

Use a consistent convention when evaluating alternatives: either compare gross figures with gross figures for a high-level market analysis, or compare the net returns actually available to you after documented expenses and taxes.

How time horizon and risk tolerance change the meaning

Investor.gov explains that asset allocation depends on both time horizon and risk tolerance. Time horizon is when the money must be available; risk tolerance is your capacity and willingness to endure losses. A five-year label does not determine either one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short or inflexible goals

If the money is needed on a fixed date, a market loss near that date can be more important than the average historical return. The relevant question is not “Did stocks usually rise over five years?” but “Can this goal survive a substantial decline before the money is needed?”

Longer or flexible goals

More time and flexibility can make it easier to remain invested through volatility, but they do not remove company-specific or market-wide risk. A long horizon should support a deliberate allocation, not an assumption that losses must eventually reverse.

Risk capacity versus risk comfort

An investor may be financially able to withstand a loss yet still sell in panic, or may be comfortable with volatility but unable to replace money needed soon. Both dimensions matter when deciding how much exposure to stocks belongs in a portfolio.

Diversification: useful protection, not a guarantee

Investor.gov describes diversification as spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. Owning multiple companies, sectors, regions, and asset classes can reduce the damage from one company’s failure or one industry’s slump. It cannot prevent a broad market decline, eliminate volatility, or guarantee a positive five-year return.

Check whether a supposedly diversified fund is actually concentrated in a few large positions or sectors. Also account for overlapping holdings across funds; owning several products does not necessarily mean owning independent risks.

A practical five-year return checklist

  • Write the exact start and end dates, including the time zone or market close convention when relevant.
  • Label the figure as cumulative or annualized.
  • State whether dividends and distributions are included and reinvested.
  • Separate price performance from the impact of deposits and withdrawals.
  • Use a benchmark with comparable geography, company size, sector exposure, currency, and risk.
  • Review interim drawdowns and recovery periods, not only the ending value.
  • Subtract documented fund, trading, advisory, and other investment costs when estimating your experience.
  • Handle taxes according to your account and jurisdiction rather than applying an assumed rate.
  • Ask whether you can tolerate a substantial loss before the goal date.
  • Check how the holding fits with the rest of your portfolio and its diversification.
  • Treat historical figures as descriptions of the past, never as promises about the next five years.

Common mistakes when reading a five-year statistic

Calling a positive result “safe”

A gain says the ending value exceeded the starting value under a stated convention. It says nothing about the probability or severity of future losses.

Confusing an average with a typical guaranteed experience

An average across rolling periods can conceal a wide distribution of outcomes. The historical S&P 500 example includes both negative and exceptionally strong five-year annualized periods.

Comparing unlike measurements

A stock’s price return cannot be fairly compared with an index’s dividend-reinvested total return. Nor can a five-year annualized figure be compared with a one-year cumulative figure without conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring concentration and personal cash needs

A single stock carries risks that a broad index does not, while a portfolio needed on a fixed date has less ability to wait for a recovery. The statistic cannot make those risks disappear.

The bottom line on five-year stock returns

A five-year return is a useful historical measurement when its dates, annualization, dividend treatment, benchmark, and costs are clear. It summarizes where an investment ended, not the risk taken to get there. Historical rolling-period data show that five-year outcomes can range from losses to very large gains, so a positive result is not a safety certificate and a five-year horizon is not universally suitable. Judge the number alongside the path of returns, your time horizon and risk tolerance, diversification, and the possibility that future performance will differ from the past.
