A Delta table is not simply a folder of Parquet files. It is a table state defined by two cooperating parts: Parquet data files that hold the rows, and a transaction log that records each commit and determines which files belong to each version of the table. The log is what gives Delta its transactional behavior and version-aware reads. On the standard filesystem-based model, that is the whole picture; catalog-managed tables, covered below, add one qualification.
The misconception to drop first
Many people meet Delta through a directory that already contains Parquet files, then assume the directory is the table. It is not. If you point a generic Parquet reader at a Delta table directory, it can decode the data files, but it has no way to know which of those files are current, which were removed by a later operation, or what the table looked like yesterday. Those answers come from the transaction log, and a client has to consult it to produce the table’s authoritative view.

Two layers: data files and the transaction log
The official Delta Lake FAQ describes the storage format as versioned Parquet files for the data, plus a transaction log that tracks commits. It helps to think of these as two separate layers that a Delta-aware client reads together.

The data layer
Parquet files hold the rows in columnar form. An update or delete does not necessarily rewrite the whole table in place; instead, it can produce a new table state that refers to the appropriate set of data files. Older data files may remain on storage for a while, which is what makes earlier versions readable (subject to the retention rules described later).

The transaction and metadata layer
The log records changes and the state that results from them. A Delta-aware reader does not treat every file in the directory as live table data. It reads the log, works out the current snapshot, and then reads only the files that snapshot includes. In the usual filesystem layout, the log lives in a _delta_log/ subdirectory beside the data files:
events/
_delta_log/
00000000000000000000.json
00000000000000000001.json
...
part-00000-....snappy.parquet
part-00001-....snappy.parquet
Each numbered JSON file is a commit that adds or removes data files and updates metadata such as the schema. The log is an open protocol. The Delta Lake resources page points to the protocol reference, and the Delta Kernel documentation describes how a reader obtains file status from a scan and then applies protocol- and metadata-directed transformations to turn physical Parquet data into logical table rows. Those transformations are the reason “Parquet plus a log” is a useful mental model, but also the reason a plain Parquet reader cannot reproduce Delta semantics.
What the log gives you
Delta Lake’s official overview lists ACID transactions, scalable metadata handling, batch and streaming use, schema enforcement, time travel, and update, delete, and merge operations. Most of those capabilities depend on the log rather than on the Parquet files themselves:

- Atomic commits. A write becomes part of the table when its commit is recorded. Readers resolve a snapshot instead of picking up whatever files happen to be present.
- Versions. Each commit produces a table version. The quick start demonstrates reading an older version through time travel.
- Streaming guarantees. The quick start states that the log guarantees exactly-once processing for the documented streaming write scenario, including concurrent batch queries or streams.
- Operation history. The utility documentation covers the history command, which lists the commits that produced the current state.
These are capabilities of Delta-aware clients operating on a log-backed table. The files alone do not provide them.
Delta compared with a plain Parquet directory
The practical difference shows up in four areas. The table below compares the two as they behave on a filesystem-based Delta table.
| Aspect | Plain Parquet directory | Delta table (filesystem-based) |
|---|---|---|
| Snapshot and transaction semantics | No commit boundary. A reader may see files from an in-progress write. | Readers resolve a snapshot from the log. A write is visible when its commit is recorded. |
| Version history | None built in. Any history must be maintained by the team. | Each commit is a version. Time travel reads a prior version, and history is available through the utility commands. |
| Client compatibility | Any Parquet reader can open the files, but that does not mean it returns the table’s current logical rows. | A client must support the table’s enabled protocol features to read or write correctly. |
| Retention behavior | Entirely under your control. Deleting a file removes it for every reader. | Log retention and VACUUM determine how long older versions remain reachable. Defaults are described below. |
Readers need protocol support, not just Parquet decoding
The protocol documentation says every Delta table declares a protocol specification listing the features that applications must understand. A client that does not understand an enabled feature cannot correctly read or write that table, even if it can open the Parquet files without error.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
This matters most when one table is accessed by several engines. Checking the file format is not enough. Verify the table’s reader and writer protocol versions and its enabled features against what each engine supports. In recent Delta releases, DESCRIBE DETAIL reports the minimum reader and writer versions and the table features, which gives you the values to compare.

Writing a new table
The official quick start creates a table by writing a DataFrame with the delta format. Existing Spark SQL code can often switch from parquet to delta for this creation flow:
df.write.format("delta").save("/tmp/events")
# Time travel to the first committed version
spark.read.format("delta").option("versionAsOf", 0).load("/tmp/events")
Converting a Parquet directory in place
The utility documentation describes converting an existing Parquet directory without rewriting the data. The conversion lists the files, creates a transaction log that tracks them, and infers the schema from the Parquet footers.

- Confirm that the directory contains only the Parquet files that should belong to the table, and that no other formats or stray files sit beside them.
- Run the conversion from SQL:
CONVERT TO DELTA parquet.`/data/events`. For partitioned data, supply the partition columns, for exampleCONVERT TO DELTA parquet.`/data/events` PARTITIONED BY (event_date DATE). The utility documentation notes that partitioned data may require an explicit partition-column schema. - Check the result with
DESCRIBE HISTORY, which should show the conversion as the first commit, andDESCRIBE DETAIL, which shows the protocol versions and features. - Read the table back and compare row counts and schema with the original Parquet data before any downstream job depends on it.
The conversion makes the directory a Delta table by creating the log. It does not change what the Parquet files contain, so the data itself can already exist before the table is defined.

Time travel depends on two things staying in place: the log entries that describe an old version, and the data files that version references. Two settings affect them.

delta.logRetentionDurationwith a default of 30 days. The utility documentation describes table history as retained for 30 days by default. This is a default, and table settings can change it. Check the table’s properties rather than assuming 30 days. - VACUUM. VACUUM removes data files that no longer belong to any version inside the retention window. Its default retention is 7 days (168 hours), and it can be previewed with a dry run before anything is deleted.
-- Preview which files would be removed
VACUUM events DRY RUN;
-- Remove unreferenced files older than the retention window
VACUUM events;
Once VACUUM has removed the files an older version needs, time travel to that version fails. Reducing retention or running VACUUM with a short window therefore shortens the period in which you can recover earlier states. Before making a recovery promise to a team, confirm the table’s retention settings and the date of its last VACUUM.
The catalog-managed exception
The default model described above is filesystem-based, and it is the usual layout. It is not the only current model. The official catalog-managed tables page says Delta Lake 4.0.1 and later documents a catalogManaged feature. In that mode, a managing catalog coordinates commits, direct access through the filesystem is unsupported, and the table’s protocol version is upgraded. A catalog-managed table therefore may not present the _delta_log/ directory as the only coordination point that a filesystem reader can use. If your tables are catalog-managed, read that page before assuming the directory-level description above applies.
Practical checks before you rely on a Delta table
- Confirm that every engine that reads or writes the table supports its enabled protocol features.
- Record the table’s log retention and VACUUM schedule, since they set how far back time travel reaches.
- Do not delete files under
_delta_log/or data files by hand; use Delta commands so the log stays consistent with the data. - Use the table’s history, not directory listings, to determine what the current table contains.
The official documentation covers these topics on the pages linked below.
