What a Crypto Lending Platform Does—and What the Label Doesn’t Tell You

A crypto lending platform can connect borrowers and lenders, lend as a principal, or deploy customer assets. Understand the transfer, repayment terms, collateral, and legal role before using one.

A crypto lending platform is a service or software intermediary that facilitates arrangements in which cryptoassets or funds are transferred between parties under terms requiring repayment of the same or equivalent value, sometimes with interest or yield. Depending on the product, you may transfer crypto to seek a return, borrow crypto or money against collateral, or use a service that connects lenders and borrowers. The label alone does not reveal who holds your assets, who owes you repayment, or which legal rules apply.

How crypto lending platforms work

There is no single platform model. The direction of the transfer and the platform’s role determine what the arrangement means for a user.

Lending crypto to seek a return

You transfer cryptoassets to a firm or another borrower under an agreement. The agreement may promise a yield and the return of the same or equivalent assets later. In some arrangements, the firm uses customer assets and pays interest; in others, a service connects asset holders with borrowers. Equivalent assets do not necessarily mean the identical units you transferred.

Before transferring assets, read the contract to establish whether ownership or custody changes, how the assets may be used, what repayment is owed, and what happens if the borrower defaults or you request withdrawal. A promised return is not, by itself, evidence that repayment is guaranteed or that customer assets can always be recovered. The FCA describes these lending models in its cryptoasset lending and borrowing discussion.

Borrowing against crypto

A borrower may receive cryptoassets or funds and pledge cryptoassets or funds as collateral. The borrower agrees to repay equivalent value and may also owe interest or fees. The contract determines the collateral valuation, repayment schedule, liquidation conditions, and consequences of default; these terms cannot be inferred from the phrase “crypto lending.”

What the platform does

A platform may lend or borrow as a principal, take customer assets and deploy them, or act as an intermediary matching parties. Those roles can allocate custody, repayment, and borrower risks differently. Check the identity of the legal counterparty and whether the platform is acting for itself or arranging a transaction. The FCA’s PERG 18 guidance explains why the legal characterization depends on the substance of the arrangement and the parties’ roles.

Crypto lending, borrowing, and staking are different

These terms describe different activities, even when a service uses similar language about earning returns.

Activity What happens What to check
Crypto lending A holder transfers cryptoassets to a firm or borrower under terms that may provide for yield and return of the same or equivalent assets. Who receives and controls the assets, what repayment is owed, and what happens on default or withdrawal.
Crypto borrowing A borrower receives cryptoassets or funds and may pledge collateral, with an obligation to repay equivalent value and possibly interest. Collateral, valuation, fees, repayment terms, and any liquidation or default provisions.
Staking Cryptoassets are immobilized to support proof-of-stake or similar consensus, potentially in exchange for block rewards. How the staking arrangement works and what conditions affect access to the assets or rewards.

The descriptions are high-level: actual products may use different structures. The EBA-ESMA factsheet distinguishes lending, borrowing, and staking. Lending should not be treated as synonymous with staking, yield farming, or simply holding crypto in custody.

What to examine before using a lending product

Do not assess a product by its headline yield alone. Read its actual agreement and identify the following:

  • Parties and roles: Who is legally lending and borrowing? Is the platform a principal, custodian, or intermediary?
  • Assets and control: What moves, who controls it, and does the agreement transfer ownership or custody? Is repayment in the same units or equivalent assets?
  • Repayment and return: What principal or equivalent value is due, when is it due, and how are yield, interest, and fees calculated?
  • Collateral and default: For a collateralized loan, what collateral is required, how is it valued, and what can happen if its value falls or repayment is missed?
  • Access and withdrawal: Are there maturity dates, withdrawal conditions, or restrictions on getting assets back?
  • Applicable rules: Which jurisdiction applies, and what activities does the provider actually perform? A product name does not establish authorization or legal protection.

Does “crypto lending” have one legal meaning?

No. It is a broad market description, not a universal legal category. The legal treatment depends on the transaction’s substance, contractual terms, the parties’ roles, and the jurisdiction.

In the UK, the FCA Handbook says qualifying cryptoasset lending and borrowing are not distinct regulated cryptoasset activities in their own right; they may instead fall within other regulated activities, such as dealing in or arranging deals in qualifying cryptoassets. Whether an arrangement also amounts to consumer credit depends on its specific legal and commercial structure and the parties involved. This is UK-specific guidance, not a rule for every country.

The FCA says it published final rules and guidance for its cryptoasset regime on 30 June 2026. Its regime overview says firms granted permission to operate under FSMA on or after 25 October 2027 will be subject to the new regime. These dates do not mean every current crypto lender is authorized or that users receive identical protections; check current FCA materials and the provider’s status for the relevant activity and date.
