A computer trade show is an organized industry event where companies display or demonstrate computing and related technology, meet buyers and business partners, and discuss developments in the market. The term describes a kind of event, not one fixed show: it can mean a specialist IT exhibition or a wider technology fair with computing among many sectors.
What defines a computer trade show?
Trade shows bring companies in an industry together to present products or services, connect with customers and partners, and explore business opportunities and market trends. The CES exhibitor policy describes that purpose for trade shows.

“Computer trade show” is therefore a useful descriptive label rather than the official name of a single event format. Depending on the show, computing may be the main subject or one part of a broader technology and industrial program.
What kinds of events does the term include?
Consumer and broad technology showcases
CES is a broad consumer technology event rather than a computer-only exhibition. Its organizer says it showcases consumer technology hardware, content, and delivery systems; its categories include computing as well as enterprise, wireless, robotics, and manufacturing. The event also has a conference program. CES: About

Industrial and manufacturing fairs
HANNOVER MESSE is centered on manufacturing and industry. Its scope brings together electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, digital technology, and energy, with areas including automation, digitalization, and research and technology transfer. It combines exhibitions with a conference program. HANNOVER MESSE: Where research and manufacturing meet
The history of computing events also overlaps with industrial fairs. Deutsche Messe records that the office and information technology fair CeBIT developed within HANNOVER MESSE and had its own hall in 1970. That history illustrates the difference between a broad industrial fair and a more dedicated computing and IT event. HANNOVER MESSE: History

What happens at a computer expo?
Exhibitors use trade shows to show products and services, demonstrate how they work, and meet potential customers and partners. Attendees may get early looks at products, make business connections, and learn about developments across the sector. CES describes demonstrations, first looks, and networking among its attendee opportunities. CES: Why CES?

How to tell whether a show fits your purpose
Before choosing an event, check the official page against what you want to accomplish:
- Subject: Is the focus consumer computing, enterprise IT, communications, manufacturing technology, or a mix?
- Audience and access: Is it aimed at professional buyers, exhibitors, industry visitors, media, or general attendees, and can you register?
- Business purpose: Is the event suited to product discovery, demonstrations, sourcing, partnerships, customer meetings, or market intelligence?
- Program: Does it offer an exhibition floor, demonstrations, talks, conference sessions, or networking?
- Edition details: Confirm the current dates and venue with the organizer, since timing and location vary by event and edition.
How large are computer trade shows?
There is no general attendance figure established for computer trade shows as a category. For scale, the Consumer Technology Association reported 148,392 participants at CES 2026 in its audited results announcement dated 31 March 2026. That number applies to that edition of CES only; it should not be treated as a count for computer trade shows overall. CTA: CES 2026 audit shows four percent growth in participation
