It helps compare specifications across cameras, but it is not a promise of how many shots you will get in your own use.
What the CIPA number counts
For still photography, the rating is the number of images taken without changing or recharging the battery, starting with a new primary battery or a fully charged rechargeable battery. The method is set out in CIPA DC-002, the standard procedure for measuring digital still-camera battery consumption.

CIPA lists DC-002-Translation-2020, published January 21, 2020, as the current edition on its standards page. It revises the original procedure published in December 2003. CIPA recommends the procedure to members and camera makers worldwide, but says it is not enforceable.

Why the rating is useful—and what it cannot tell you
CIPA’s goal is to make battery-consumption specifications more consistently presented and meaningfully comparable between manufacturers. As CIPA explains in its application policy, the standard was established “to help to avoid consumer confusion by standardizing the method of presenting the battery consumption of each type of digital camera, which is now being inconsistently described in catalogs, operation manuals, etc.”

The rating is a result under defined conditions, not a direct measurement of battery capacity in isolation. The procedure identifies test-condition categories such as shooting mode, recorded pixel count, flash use, focal distance, subject brightness, recording medium, optical zoom, AE/AF operation, operating environment, video and audio use, white balance, monitor mode, playback, shooting intervals, and how often and for how long the camera is powered off. These factors shape the test recipe; they do not mean every variable is changed in the same way for every camera.
Your habits and settings may differ from that recipe. The published sources do not provide a conversion factor from a CIPA count to a particular person’s expected shot count, so there is no reliable fixed multiplier to apply. Actual use can vary; the rating alone does not establish whether you will get more or fewer shots.

How to compare camera battery specifications
- Compare like with like. Put CIPA still-photo counts beside other CIPA still-photo counts, not beside a different kind of battery-life measurement.
- Check what the figure describes. Confirm that each number is a still-image count, rather than a movie duration or another measure.
- Use the result as a benchmark. A shared procedure makes specifications more comparable, but it does not guarantee the same result in your shooting conditions.
CIPA still-photo ratings are not video runtimes
CIPA handles movie battery life separately from the still-photo image count. Its guideline distinguishes actual-use-case movie recording from continuous recording under fixed conditions. Where a catalog lists movie battery life, the guideline says to indicate both actual shooting battery life and continuous-recording time. Those durations should be compared with the same kind of video measure—not with a still-photo shot count.
