Protect yourself from common cybersecurity threats by using a different long password for every account, turning on multifactor authentication (MFA), installing security updates promptly, and verifying unexpected messages through a trusted channel. Back up important files so you can recover them if a device is lost or compromised. These steps reduce risk, though none guarantees that an account or device cannot be attacked.
Secure your most important accounts first
Start with your email account: access to it can help someone reset passwords for other services. Then secure financial, shopping, and social accounts. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends long passwords; it suggests aiming for at least 15 characters. Make each password unique so a breach at one service does not give an attacker the same password to try elsewhere.

Use a password manager or a built-in generator
A password manager can generate and store distinct passwords, and some browsers and devices offer similar password-generation and saving features. Protect the manager with a strong password and use its security settings. If you need to recover access, follow the manager’s official recovery process.

Turn on multifactor authentication
MFA asks for another proof of identity in addition to a password. If an account supports it, enable it. The FTC says authenticator apps and security keys are more secure than passcodes sent by text or email when those options are available. CISA’s October 2025 cybersecurity awareness poster names a physical security key as its strongest listed method. Availability depends on the service and your devices.

- A FIDO security key with PUF technology provides a unique, hardware-rooted trust anchor that resists tampering and cyber attacks, offering stronger security than conventional designs.
- FIDO2 Certified Protection – Enjoy phishing-resistant security with FIDO2 certification, ensuring top-tier account safety across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS iOS, Android and more.
- Easy to use & Portable – Designed with a compact USB-C interface, Clife key fits easily on your keychain for secure access anywhere. Simply plug in and authenticate with ease.
- Universal Compatibility – Works seamlessly with hundreds of FIDO2/U2F compliant services, including popular cloud, email, and social platforms.
- Backup recommended – To ensure continuous access, register a backup Clife security key as a spare in case your primary key is lost.
Before choosing a key, check that the account supports it, that your device can connect to it (for example, through USB or NFC), and how you would sign in if the key were lost. Keep a spare key or another recovery method where the service permits it. A security key protects sign-in; it does not by itself protect a device from malware.
Protect security-question answers
If a service requires security questions, avoid answers that someone could find on social media or elsewhere online. Treat the answers like passwords: use distinct, hard-to-guess answers and store them securely.

Keep computers, phones, and connected devices updated
Software updates often include security fixes. Turn on automatic updates for your operating system, browser, mobile apps, and security software, and install updates promptly. The FTC recommends automatic updates, and the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) also advises installing updates promptly.

For a smart device, follow the manufacturer’s official support instructions. Check whether older phones, computers, and connected devices still receive security updates; NCSC warns that unsupported devices do not receive manufacturer security updates and are less secure. Check current support information for your specific model. You do not necessarily need the newest or most expensive device, but a device that no longer receives security updates is a security risk.

Secure your home Wi-Fi as well. The FTC notes that malware on one connected device can spread to others on the same network. Use the router maker’s official instructions for securing your network rather than relying on settings you cannot verify.
Handle unexpected messages as potential phishing
A message may pretend to come from a bank, utility, or other organization and claim there is an overdue bill or account problem. Its aim may be to get you to click a link, open an attachment, or share account details. The FTC reported in April 2025 that email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024; the agency’s alert does not give a percentage for that ranking.

In the United States, the FTC says you can forward phishing email to [email protected] and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. After checking and reporting it, delete the message.

Keep copies of important computer files on an external drive or a cloud service, and back up phone data. Choose a backup approach you can maintain and verify that you can restore files when needed. A backup helps with recovery if data or a device is lost or compromised; it does not prevent phishing, account takeover, or malware.
What to do if personal information may have been misused
If you think someone is using your personal information in the United States, the FTC directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov for reporting and a personalized recovery plan. If an account appears to be compromised, use the provider’s official recovery flow rather than links in messages claiming to help.
For wider guidance, see the FTC’s advice on protecting personal information from hackers and scammers, its April 2025 phishing alert, and the NCSC’s software and app update guidance.
