What a 10GbE Switch Can—and Can’t—Make Faster at Home

A 10GbE switch can help local transfers when both endpoints and their storage can keep up. It won’t upgrade slower devices or increase internet speed by itself.

A 10GbE managed switch can make local transfers faster when both devices on the transfer have compatible 10GbE connections and their storage and configuration can keep up. It does not upgrade slower devices or, by itself, increase internet speed.

What actually gets faster with a 10GbE switch?

The best candidate is a transfer over your local network—for example, copying files between a wired workstation and a NAS. A 10GbE switch gives compatible devices a path to connect at up to a 10-gigabit link rate. The improvement depends on what was limiting the transfer before: if a slower network link was the bottleneck, upgrading that path may help; if storage or another part of the system is the bottleneck, the switch alone may not.

A switch’s link rate is not the same as the application throughput you see during a file copy. Network adapters, storage devices, drivers, negotiated link speeds, and configuration can all affect the result. Synology’s slow-transfer troubleshooting guide recommends checking network state and settings on both the client and NAS.

This distinction matters for any first-person account: measured improvement belongs to the specific devices, workload, and setup tested. General network capability cannot establish what changed in an individual home. A useful before-and-after comparison uses the same endpoints, file, transfer direction, and measurement method, while recording storage media and configuration changes.

Will a 10GbE switch make internet use faster?

Not on its own. A local switch can improve the connection between devices on your home network, but internet traffic also passes through your router or gateway and depends on the service delivered by your ISP. Those links and the endpoint must support the speed you expect. TP-Link explains the distinction between multi-gig internet service and the networking hardware in a home in its multi-gig internet overview.

Ordinary browsing and many gaming sessions may not use enough bandwidth for a faster local link to be noticeable. Downloads from the internet remain limited by the service and the path to the internet, not just by the switch.

Do both devices need 10GbE?

For a transfer to benefit from a 10GbE path, both endpoints need suitable 10GbE interfaces, and the switch ports and intervening links must support the intended connection. Connecting a device with a slower Ethernet port to a 10GbE switch does not turn that device into a 10GbE endpoint.

For a NAS upgrade, check that its exact model supports the adapter you intend to use, along with the relevant operating system and drivers. Synology’s E10G30-T2 product page describes one 10GbE card designed for Synology systems; it is not evidence that the card works with every NAS model.

What to check before choosing 10GbE hardware

  • Ports and interfaces: Check whether the switch uses copper RJ45 ports or SFP+ ports, and match those to the interfaces on your NAS and computers.
  • Port count and topology: Count the NAS, workstations, router, and access-point links you want to connect, and identify which actually need multi-gig speeds.
  • Compatibility: Verify that each network adapter works with the operating system and, for a NAS card, the exact NAS model.
  • Cabling and link rate: Check cable category, run length, terminations, and the negotiated rate shown by the devices. NETGEAR’s support documentation states that 10-Gigabit Ethernet requires Cat 6A or better for runs up to 100 meters (328 feet); it also describes Cat 6 use up to 45 meters in its stated context. These are vendor guidelines, so assess the installed cable and terminations rather than assuming a cable needs replacement.
  • Storage and workload: A network upgrade cannot make storage or software sustain a transfer rate they cannot handle. Consider the actual workload, not just the switch’s advertised port speed.
  • Management features: VLANs, QoS, and IGMP snooping can help with network organization or specific traffic needs. Their presence does not, by itself, establish that a single-device file copy will be faster. NETGEAR’s XS708Ev2 and XS716E datasheet is an example of managed features in a switch product, not a current model recommendation.

When link aggregation or SMB Multichannel helps

Link aggregation and SMB Multichannel can increase aggregate throughput in supported configurations, as illustrated in QNAP’s 2025 networking and switch guide. They require compatible endpoint and network support, correct configuration, and a workload that can use multiple paths. Do not assume that combining links makes one ordinary file transfer faster; the benefit depends on how traffic is distributed and what the endpoints support.
