400 Gigabit Ethernet (400GbE or 400G Ethernet) is Ethernet operation at a 400 Gb/s Media Access Control (MAC) data rate. It is a rate within the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard family—not a specification for one particular cable, optical transceiver, or link distance.
What does the 400 Gb/s figure measure?
The figure describes the Ethernet MAC data rate, not necessarily the application throughput a user will see. Ethernet frames carry protocol overhead, and delivered application throughput also depends on the traffic mix, equipment configuration, and the rest of the link path. IEEE 802.3 defines a common MAC framework and management information base (MIB), while physical-layer specifications (PHYs) provide options suited to different media and link conditions. IEEE 802.3-2022 describes Ethernet LAN operation through 400 Gb/s.

How did 400GbE become part of Ethernet?
IEEE 802.3bs-2017 added MAC parameters, PHY specifications, and management parameters for transferring Ethernet-format frames at 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s. The IEEE 802.3 task force record gives the IEEE-SA approval date as December 6, 2017; the amendment record lists its publication date as December 12, 2017. These are separate milestones.
IEEE now lists 802.3bs-2017 as superseded. The consolidated 802.3-2022 overview describes Ethernet operation through 400 Gb/s, so 802.3bs is best understood as the originating amendment rather than the latest consolidated standard. IEEE 802.3 P802.3bs Task Force

What kinds of 400GbE physical links are there?
“400G” alone does not identify the medium or how far a link can run. IEEE 802.3 includes PHY options for fiber and electrical media. Optical examples illustrate why the specific PHY matters:
- Single-mode fiber: An IEEE amendment record describes 400 Gb/s optical interfaces for reaches up to 10 km, using 100 Gb/s per-wavelength optical signaling. IEEE/ISO/IEC 8802-3:2021/Amd 11-2021
- Multimode fiber: IEEE lists 400GBASE-SR4.2 and 400GBASE-SR8 multimode-fiber physical media dependent (PMD) options for reaches of at least 100 m. IEEE 802.3 standards activities and approved projects
These are distinct physical-layer options, not interchangeable descriptions of one universal 400G link. The stated reach applies to the specified interface and medium; it does not establish that every 400GbE device or optic can reach that distance.

What should you check when choosing a 400GbE link?
Match the physical link and both ends of the connection, rather than relying on the 400G label alone. Check:

- The number and rate of lanes or optical wavelengths, where relevant to the selected PHY.
- Connector requirements and whether the host port supports the proposed interface.
- Compatibility and interoperability with the actual equipment at both ends.
A 400G optical transceiver is only a suitable category of component if its PHY, fiber, reach, connector, and host-device support match the link. The IEEE standards cited here define interface options; they do not certify a particular retail product or establish universal compatibility.
