For a direct copy that lives on your computer, connect your phone by USB and import or copy the files. For a library you can access across devices, use iCloud Photos or Google Photos; those cloud methods depend on syncing, account access, and storage, and do not necessarily mean every original is stored on your phone.
Choose a transfer method
| What you need | Best fit | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A copy saved directly on the computer | USB import or file transfer | Photos are copied locally without first uploading them to a cloud service. |
| Access to a library from multiple devices | iCloud Photos or Google Photos | Photos sync or become available through the cloud, subject to backup completion, account access, and storage. |
| A quick wireless transfer from iPhone to Mac | AirDrop | Selected items are sent to the Mac without a cable. |
Before starting, check which phone and computer you have, whether you want local files or ongoing sync, and whether you have a USB cable that supports data transfer and fits both devices. If file compatibility matters, note whether your iPhone captures HEIF/HEVC media; changing its camera format affects new captures, not files already in your library.

Transfer iPhone photos to a Mac
Import a local copy over USB
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable. Allow the accessory if prompted.
- Unlock the iPhone and tap Trust if asked whether to trust the computer.
- Open Photos on the Mac and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Select the photos you want and choose Import. Wait for the import to finish before disconnecting.
Apple’s photo-transfer guidance also lists Image Capture for importing directly into a folder.
Use iCloud Photos or AirDrop
With iCloud Photos enabled, the photo library syncs to the Mac. Confirm that syncing has completed and that your iCloud account has enough storage; iCloud Photos uses iCloud storage. For a small selection, AirDrop is another Apple-supported wireless option.

Transfer iPhone photos to a Windows PC
- Install the Apple Devices app on the PC.
- Connect the iPhone by USB and unlock it.
- Tap Trust or Allow if the phone prompts you to authorize the computer.
- Open Microsoft Photos and follow its import instructions to select and copy the photos.
If iCloud Photos is enabled, Apple says you must first download the original, full-resolution versions to the iPhone before importing them to a PC. See Apple’s instructions for transferring photos and videos and Microsoft’s Windows Photos import steps.
If newly captured media repeatedly causes compatibility problems, set the iPhone to Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. Apple says this captures JPEG photos and H.264 videos. It changes the format for future captures; it does not convert existing library items.

Transfer Android photos to a Windows PC
- Connect the Android phone to the PC with a USB cable and unlock the phone.
- On the phone, tap the Charging this device via USB notification.
- Under Use USB for, choose File Transfer.
- In the file-transfer window on the computer, browse to the photos and drag or copy them to a folder on the PC.
These are Google’s documented USB transfer steps for Android and Windows. Android versions and manufacturers can change the wording or layout, so look for the USB notification and a file-transfer mode if the labels differ.

Get Android photos onto a Mac
Google’s cited USB instructions describe Windows, not a universal Android-to-Mac procedure. The available method can depend on the phone maker, Android version, macOS version, and compatible software, so do not expect the same file-transfer window or labels to appear on every Mac.

If the photos are backed up to Google Photos, sign in at photos.google.com on the Mac to view or download cloud-backed items. This only works for items whose backup has completed and requires access to the relevant Google Account.
Use a cloud library—and know its limits
Google Photos
Google Photos makes backed-up items available to signed-in devices, including a computer. Google lists backup limits of photos up to 200 MB or 200 megapixels and videos up to 10 GB; these are Google Photos limits, not limits on USB transfers. Google Account storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive, Gmail, and other Google services. Check backup status and available space in Google Photos backup guidance.

As of August 10, 2026, Google Drive for desktop no longer supports the old workflow for backing up computer folders to Google Photos. Google’s current guidance says to add photos and videos from Drive to Google Photos to continue. This change concerns backing up computer folders; it does not prevent downloading photos from Google Photos to a computer.
iCloud Photos
iCloud Photos syncs the library with devices signed in to the same Apple Account, and the library uses iCloud storage. Check that the computer has finished syncing before relying on it as the only copy. For Windows USB imports, Apple’s full-resolution download requirement still applies when iCloud Photos is on.

Copy a Google Photos library to another service
Google Takeout can copy supported photos and videos to another service. It does not transfer every item or every piece of metadata. Google lists exclusions including unsupported files, Locked Folder content, unsaved creations, items in Trash, manually edited metadata such as comments, and the video portion of Motion Photos or Live Photos unless saved as video first. Review Google’s instructions for copying photos and videos before treating the destination as a complete archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a transfer that does not start
- The computer does not see the phone: Unlock the phone, reconnect the cable, and respond to any Trust, Allow, or accessory prompt. On Android, open the USB notification and choose File Transfer rather than a charging-only mode.
- The cable only charges: Try a cable known to support data transfer. Check that its connector ends fit the phone and computer.
- Some iPhone originals are missing on Windows: If iCloud Photos is on, download the original, full-resolution versions to the iPhone before importing.
- Cloud photos are absent or unavailable: Confirm you are signed in to the account holding the library, backup or sync has completed, and the account has available storage.
- Files open inconsistently on Windows: For future iPhone photos and videos, Most Compatible captures JPEG and H.264. Existing files are not converted by changing this setting.
Keep a second copy of important photos
A transfer is not automatically a backup if the only copy remains on the phone or in one cloud account. After importing, open a few files on the computer and confirm the destination folder contains the expected items. For irreplaceable photos, keep another copy on a separate storage device or in a second backed-up location.
